Art Cheater died peacefully at his home in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Thursday, February 6 at the age of 92, surrounded by his family. Art was born on Flat Island, Bonavista Bay on September 15, 1932. A devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he leaves to mourn his children Wayne Cheater (Jakki Annerino), Elaine Galley (Ron Plankeel), and Judy Snow; his grandchildren Melissa Shipley (Travis), James Cheater, Alan Snow, Angela Snow (Patrick Halley), and Alex Snow (Kyle Shepherd); and great-grandson, Calvin Shipley. Art was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Jessie Cheater; his parents Jesse and Pleasance Cheater; and his siblings Wes, Lionel, Annie, Ralph, Lyle, Charles, and Tom.
Art’s first job was teaching in Round Harbour, the community where he met his future wife; but he spent most of his working years as an accountant in St. John’s. He loved his church, and over the course of his life, served as a Sunday school teacher, sidesperson, collection counter, and on the Anglican Cemetery Committee.
Art was a quiet, unassuming man, with an innate sense of dignity. He was both kind and generous to everyone he met. Some of his happiest times were spent in his garden and in the woods.
Art’s family is grateful for the support provided by Dr. Heidi Brake; Pam Hunt, BN, RN; Dr. Marie O’Dea; Dr. Suzanne Drodge; Dr. Bradley Evans; the ER staff and 7th East staff at St. Clare’s; and the staff of the Bliss Murphy Centre. We would like to acknowledge the role paramedics with the Community Paramedicine Program played in allowing him to remain in his own home until the end, for which his family will be eternally thankful.
We would like to thank family friend Wanda Spurrell for her many acts of kindness, which helped make Art’s life better. We are also deeply appreciative of the role home care worker Ramsey Teye-Adjei played in keeping Art comfortable in the last weeks of his life.
Cremation has taken place. Art’s family will be accepting visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, February 17, from 4-8 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, February 18, at 1:30 pm.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, or the charity of your choice.

Arthur who was a colleague and friend and was always kind and helpful. We both joined the staff of the Diocesan Office around the same time and we kept in touch following our retirement. As you mourn the passing of a good father, who was so proud of his family., may the many memories of the life you shared help at this sad time.
