Audrey Evelyn Gail Rogers (nee Dicks)

We are deeply saddened to announce that, Audrey Rogers, passed peacefully away surrounded by her family at the age of 82.

Audrey was predeceased by her parents, Wilson and Frances Dicks (ne: Isaacs); In-laws, Samuel and Tryphena Rogers (nee Matthews); brothers, James and Jeffrey Dicks; brothers-in-law, William Burry and Gordon Davis; nephew, Michael Dunphy; niece, Janice Dicks.

Audrey is survived by her loving husband of more than 59 years, Garland Rogers; her children, Kim (Wayne) Sturge of Paradise and Kent (Cathy) Rogers of Torbay; her cherished grandson, Matthew Rogers (St. Catherine’s, ON); her step-grandchildren, Allison (Keith) Leonard of Paradise and Adam (Candice) Sturge of St. John’s; and step-great grandchildren Blake, Benjamin, Brooke, Jayden and Martha.

She also leaves behind her brothers, Murray (Edith) Dicks and Wilson (Yvonne) Dicks Jr.; her sister, Sylvia (Maxwell) Dunphy; her sisters-in-law, Margaret Burry, Leone Davis, and Shirley (Dan Foy) Rogers; brother-in-law Winston (Geneva) Rogers; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, family and friends, including her special friend, Ivy and her dog, Sophie.

Audrey was the first-born child of Wilson and Frances Dicks and spent her childhood in Burin Bay. At a young age, she learned about the challenges that life can bring when childhood illness claimed the lives of her young brothers, Jeffrey and James Dicks, within a short time of each other. Later, she was blessed with three more siblings, Murray, Wilson Jr., and Sylvia.

Following her high school graduation, Audrey attended summer school in St. John’s to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. A teenager, fresh out of high school, she accepted a multi-grade teaching position in Twillingate.  She spent two years there and later taught in Lethbridge, Cambelton and then Hare Bay.

In Hare Bay, she met and married the love of her life, Garland Rogers. After they began a family, Audrey decided to become a full time mom and wife. In the 1980s when her children had grown, she joined Garland in his boat and started a fishing career, spending the fishing season on Silver Fox Island, Bonavista Bay. After she retired from fishing, she continued to enjoy the comradery of the friends on the island, especially the late, Walter and Susie Rogers.

The joy of her life arrived in 2001, her grandson, Matthew.  She loved spending quality time with him, including baking, reading, printing, and buying everything to his hearts delight. Her greatest wish was for him to do well and be happy in life.

Audrey was an active member of St. Augustine’s Anglican Church for many years and enjoyed attending ACW meetings, singing in the church choir and attending special church functions.

Following a devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, Audrey moved into Karwood Retirement Retreat in Paradise for almost four years and then into St. Luke’s Home in St. John’s for the past year. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Karwood Retirement Retreat and St. Luke’s Home for the care, support and compassion provided to Audrey.  There was always comfort in knowing she was receiving such great care.

As per Audrey’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitations will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, July 21 from 2-4 and 7-9. The funeral service will be held at the chapel in Carnell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 22 at 11 am. Inurnment will take place later this year at the Anglican Cemetery in Hare Bay.

The family invites everyone to join them for a reception in Carnell’s lower lounge following the funeral service.

Donations in Audrey’s name may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador or a charity of one’s choice.
