Bernard D. Halloran, age 67, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 13th, 2023, at home surrounded by family and friends.

Bernie was born December 20th, 1955 in Sydney, Nova Scotia to Patrick and Hilda Halloran. He married his childhood sweetheart Cindy on February 26th, 1977 in their hometown of Sydney. They then moved to St. John’s, NL in 1983 in order to run what would later become the family business, Always in Vogue. Dad loved so many things in life, including business, music, hockey, and golf; but most of all he loved his family and friends. He was a notorious jokester and April Fools was his favourite day of the year. No matter the gravity of the joke, his charm and wit left you with a smile on your face. Bernie’s outgoing and positive personality was something to admire, and he will be missed but never forgotten.

Predeceased by his mother and father, Hilda and Patrick Halloran.

Leaving to mourn his wife, Cindy Halloran (nee Marmulak); sons, Jason and Darren (Brooke Halloran); daughter, Nicole (Matthew Clarke); granddaughter, Presley; grandson River; sisters, Rosemary Quinton (John), Judy Snow (Kansas), Donna Ryba (Edward), and Patty Halloran; friend and mentor, Benny Freidman; and the Marmulak family.

We would like to give special thanks to Pam Hunt and Dr. Noreen Fardy who took such wonderful care of Bernie at home – this meant the world to us. We would also like to thank the incredible staff at Always in Vogue for keeping things going during this time as Bernie would have wanted. Finally, we would like to extend our thanks to all the family, friends, and neighbours who have been there for our Dad and us over the years. It is difficult to put into words how much this meant, but just know that we appreciate and love you all so much.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday January 18 from 2 -4PM and 7 -9PM and Thursday January 19 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM.

A funeral for close family and friends will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 20 at 11AM.

A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held at 4pm on Friday, January 20th, at Glendenning golf course. Come by, tell stories, and share memories.

Donations in Bernie’s name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Mothers of Avalon, a charity close to his heart.

I did not know Bernie had passed away until today. I knew he had been battling cancer for years. I remember him fondly from our days growing up in Ashby. My late but sincere condolences to all his family on their loss.

To the Halloran family,

Please accept my deepest condolences. I first met Bernie over twenty-three years ago when I was CEO of the Health Care Foundation. We were fortunate in having Bernie volunteer to serve on our golf tournament committee. I appreciated his friendship and hard work. In particular, I especially appreciated his kindness and mentorship to me as I was newly appointed to this position. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Darren and the Vogue Family… I’m so deeply saddened by the passing of a beautiful man. Bernie was one of the nicest men I knew. Take gentle care…

Cindy and family, so sorry to hear of Bernie’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. R.I.P. Bernie.

Cindy and family I was so saddened to hear of Bernie’s passing. Not only did he inspire me through my own trauma but he was truly a great friend to me and any who knew him. I know Jason and Darren well and they will, most certainly, follow in Bernie’s footsteps becoming wonderful men themselves. Cindy I pray that you, and your daughter as well, remember him as fondly as I do. Our thoughts will be with you always. With love, Steve and Maryann and all the Fisher family

So sorry for your loss. He was a very special person who knew no stranger. He will be greatly missed.

My deepest condolences to all the family. Bernie was a very kind, generous man with a high smile and warmly embraced all he met. His presence will be missed by all who knew him. My sympathies are also extended to the long time dedicated co-workers of the Vogue family who have lost a wonderful friend. RIP

To the Halloran family,

Please accept our deepest condolences. Bernie was a very dear friend of ours and we truly enjoyed playing guitar and singing along with him at Cathy and John’s cabin in Brigus Junction years ago. Bernie and my daugter Reagan had a special connection through music and they both adored each other. She gleamed when he would praise her and we always held a special place in our hearts for him. I know Bernie had a lot of friends and he loved his family so very dearly. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time and hope you find some peace in your beautiful memories of him.

Love always, Carrie and Reagan

To the Halloran family,
We have many fond memories of Bernie from years ago when he and Nicole took piano lessons with us. When arriving at our house one of our greyhounds would bark until Bernie took off his hat which gave us all a good laugh. The dogs loved him, of course, as would anyone since he always had a very positive energy and lovely personality, along with musical talent. Sending much love and heartfelt condolences to you all.
Sincerely,
Denise Lear & Gary Johnston

Cindy, Nicole, Jason, Darren and all family. Words seem futile at times like this however, we want to express our sincere condolences on the passing of Bernie. We know from our relationship for over 25 years how close you all were as a family and how much he will be missed by all of you. He was a creative, hard working man, a true entrepreneur who had a real passion for the family business but still found time for friends and the less fortunate in our community. Despite his hard work he always tried to have fun while doing it and yes that tremendous outgoing way with his big. smile were precious. We shall always remember the last purchase tradition at the store on Christmas Eve. As well, every time we hear Hong Kong mentioned we shall always remember Bernie having William show us around when we were there to board a cruise..It was fantastic .His playing of music in various settings will always be treasured. Long may his big jib draw and may a fair wind always be at his back. Rest in peace our dear friend Bernie!

Cindy, Nicole, Darren, Jason and family.,

Our heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Wishing you peace, comfort, courage, and lots of love at this time of sorrow. Our thoughts are with you all.

Sincere condolences to all of Bernie’s family and friends. He was certainly a true gentleman. I met Bernie back in the early nineties and he was super nice right out of the gate. From what I’m reading that never changed. We recently reconnected through Facebook and had a great catch up. Thinking of you all. RIP Bernie, Keep on strummin’

Cindy, Family and Friends,

My deepest condolences to you on Bernie’s passing. I was so fortunate to have worked with Bernie over the past decade and truly enjoyed every minute. We became good friends, as did most who met him. Life is not always easy, or kind but Bernie embraced it, loved a challenge and was always the optimist. We will keep working, advocating and supporting your industry although with a fraction of Bernie’s passion! Forever missed and always remembered.

Cindy and Family: Bernie was a very genuine humble person. You were always greeted with his big smile, he had a way of making you feel you were the most important person in the room. He will be sure missed and always remembered. My prayers and thoughts are with your family at this time

Cindy and family,
Bernie truly was a very sincere and genuine gentleman. He always greeted with a smile and asked “how are you doing”. He made it all about you. It was a privilege to have known him. Our deepest sympathy and prayers for you and your family.

Blessings
Lloyd & Jean Matthews

I am glad to have known Bernie and lucky to have played hockey with him. He always had a good story and had the knack of telling a joke. Always cheerful and optimistic he was a big presence in the dressing room.

This is such a sad day.
Cindy we spent many hours travelling in that Vogue Furriers van, you co-pilot, along with many other soccer players going here and there. Leaving at 10PM heading to Fredericton. Halifax, Saint John, etc., sharing stories telling lies.
I will truly miss him.
All the best to you and the kids.

Fond Memories of my friend Bernie,
Throughout many of my young Ashby school years, Cornwallis, Constantine, Park the day started with Bernie and Johnny Abbass standing in the back hallway of 336 Cartier St. waiting for me to be ready for the walk to school, where we discussed many important issues. Bernie was a true leader right from the beginning, leading the gang charges against his cousin Eddy in back of Cornwallis school at recess. Many, many games of road hockey, fighting in Bernie’s basement over which NHL hockey team was the best Boston or Chicago. Sitting in Bernie’s back yard and shooting bottles of the top of the fence with his pellet gun, Bernie trying to teach me how to play the guitar (there was only one in the room with talent), watching Bernie and his family put tinsel on their Christmas tree, it was a work of art. Bernie spending time at my cottage in Big Pond where we tried to eliminate the squirrel and frog population, swimming, water skiing, walking the highway late at night from the MacDonnell’s or Big Pond store, walk five poles run ten. The many days Johnny, Bernie and I walked to the Sydney forum for hockey games, practices or skating. The three of us also shared the distinction of being on the first ever Cornwallis Hockey Team, fifth graders playing against the grade sixers in the city, it didn’t go well. Bernie thrived on being better, he was an average skater like the rest of us, but then he decided that wasn’t good enough, so he went skating at the Sydney forum every chance he had, and he became a great skater, leaving us in the dust. He applied this same drive to his understanding of the fur industry and his music. I can’t take any credit for his business, family and singing success but I would like to think I help him get started playing golf.
Bernie and I lost contact for a lot of years, but we managed to finally catch up about 8 years ago. It was so interesting to hear about his success in the fur business, his international sales in China, his promotion of the seal industry and his investments in the St. John’s community. We were hoping to get a game of golf together in Cape Breton or Florida but I guess that will be in another place and time.
Bernie was a great friend, business leader and father. You left the world a better place. Rest Peacefully. My Condolences to Cindy, Darren, Jason, Nicole, and his sisters. Darrell Heffernan

Cindy, Darren, Jason and family.

Heather and I are heartbroken for your loss but thankful for the memories. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Bernie was … Truly Humble and Kind.

I think my favourite memory has to be just before COVID when we stayed with you and Cindy in Bradenton at the same time as the McKims. Laugh muscles were sore for a week after. I still can’t help but smile every time I think about when we were at the Daytona 500 the next day and you texted me “Hey Gringo, shoot someone in the crowd to cause commotion so we can see on TV where you are sitting”.

Bernie, thanks for encouraging me to bring my guitar to the Twine and play for “people ” other than just Heather. And thanks for all the times you polished and restrung my guitar at the store. I’ll be forever grateful for that and the memories of playing with you, Kelly, Garrett and the rest of The Twine kitchen party band. I’m going to buy that Taylor and learn the names of the guitar chords…. I promise.
Bernie, you made the world a better place.

Rest in Peace Bernie.
Darin and Heather

To all family & friends, I am so sorry for your loss. When I worked downtown years ago at Travel Management, I had the pleasure of knowing Bernie. Such a wonderful & kind human being. Dear Cindy and family,
I am so sorry for your loss and offer my deepest condolences. As you know, Bernie and I were close for over 30 years, since I met him teaching guitar, and I have never had a finer friend.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Bernie. My condolences to his family and friends. In that capacity, I remember travelling with him to China where I got to see – and enjoy – firsthand his enthusiasm, wit, charisma and humour. Rest in Peace Bernie.

To: Cindy and family.
Cindy, I was deeply saddened to learn of Bernie’s passing. I have known Bernie and yourself for a long time. As a customer of Always in Vogue my experience was that Bernie gave new meaning to the concept of ‘client centered service’ and the Vogue team modeled his example. I knew Bernie to be a kind, respectful human being. He had an endearing smile, a talent to make a person feel special, to evoke a smile, positivity and spread happiness – this was his ‘light’ and his legacy. He will be remembered.

Cindy there are no words that can ease your pain right now. May precious memories of Bernie bring you comfort and may they serve to keep his ‘light’ ever so bright. God Bless you and your children. Praying for strength for you and know that Bernie will always be by your side.

Friend and Patron,
Marina Mercer

So sorry to hear about Bernie’s passing, we have many fond memories of him and his family during our time in St. John’s. He always had a smile on his face and rarely did he not have a new joke to tell. His enthusiasm rubbed off on everyone, and the word quit did not seem to exist in his vocabulary. Our condolences to the Halloran family.

Heartfelt sympathies to the Halleran family. Bernie, in typical fashion befriended our son. The mention of Bernie’s name made Jeremy dance in his wheelchair. From the Wilds to Mile One to PC conventions they shared many celebratory events. Bernie was as great a friend that ever stepped in shoe leather. His void will not easily be filled.

Cindy we are so sorry to hear of Bernie ‘s passing. Our thoughts and prayers to you and your family at this difficult time.

To Cindy and family, my thoughts are with you through such a difficult time.

Sorry to hear of Bernie passing away, my heart goes out to you Ciindy and your family..

We came to know Bernie over more than twenty years when he came to the Grande Meadows golf tournament. He, along with Bally Haly group, always stayed at our cottages in Garnish. We looked forward to his visit and our little chats as they came and went. I sat a few times with Bernie and played a few songs on guitar which I enjoyed so much. When I wrote my book, Bernie requested a copy which I very much appreciated. We will sincerely miss Bernie but his memory will remain with us forever. Horatio and Theresa Cluett, (Long Ridge Cottages).

Very sad news as Bernie has, throughout his life, had such a positive impact on so many people. Growing up playing hockey, people like Bernie were very few and far between. His passion for the game was contagious and affected so many of us throughout the years. He was not just a coach or another hockey parent to us but a friend and teacher. Condolences and good thoughts are with his family and we hope that all the great memories of him will help you through this time.

.Cindy, Jason, Darren and Nicole. I was saddened to hear the news. Bernie, as many have conveyed over the past few days, was a true gentleman. Whenever you spent time in his company, however brief, you left feeling better. I hope you take some solace in the outpouring of condolences and kindness. These expressions are a mirror of the man he was.

My heartfelt condolences to Cindy and family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. Cherish your beautiful memories. RIP Bernie

To Cindy, Darren, Jason and Nicole. My condolences on Bernie’s passing.

Bernie was a fun coach when I was playing minor hockey. Got to play with and against Darren, who we called danky, and then got to meet Jason who was a little bit older than us. Nicole was always a trooper following her older brothers around.

Years later the entire family was super supportive of the charity golf tournaments a lot of us Newfoundlander’s would try to organize to give back to our amazing community.

He was a kind, generous and brave man.

Teddy Purcell

Sincere condolences to Cindy, Darren, Jason & Nicole.

I met Bernie over 20 years ago when he knocked on my door & announced that he & Ed Martin were going to coach the St. John’s Minor Caps bantam team. He told me that I was going to be the manager & there was no option to say no because “I don’t take no for an answer”. We had a fabulous year but before it was over he caught myself & Ed in an April Fool joke. He called at 7:00am & said he was broke down in the Holiday Inn parking lot.. I went over & drove around the lot several times before I saw Ed doing the same thing. We soon realized that Bernie was home in bed laughing at us.

We remained friends since & occasionally reminisced about the great bantam year we shared as well as our families.

I admired how he went through his illness without a complaint, always positive vibes. RIP Bernie.

Cindy -Darren and extended family of Bernie
The poet said-
“ Do not go quietly into the dark night
Rage – Rage against the fading of the light “
Bernie clearly took that verse to heart and for the past 12 years he fought against the illness which finally took him away .
He was valiant indeed .
The tributes to him from those whom he met on the road of his life clearly show that Bernie “ touched all the bases “ on his home run trot .
He made a difference to many on his journey
He is now at rest and may that rest be in peace
Sincere condolences to all those who mourn his passing
I was glad to have been his friend .
Godspeed Bernie

To the Halloran family my sincere condolences on the passing of my friend Bernie. He was a true gentleman, one that anyone would admire and cherish to be like. I met Bernie in 1990 along with Bennie when I sourced out a product for Bennie just before Christmas. Bennie indicated to me that the man next to him Bernie would someday owned and run his business.. No truer words were said. From that day Bernie, Bennie and I became life long friends. My many trips to Vogue Furriers on Christmas Eve morning enjoying a glass of cheer and a piece of pizza with Bernie and Bennie was rewarding and memorable. The golf games which Bernie would be grumpy when I always out drove him from the tee box. I commented to him that the reason was that he was too close to the golf ball after he hit it. I said he had NT no talent which he growled at and laugh at the same time to that great smile. Oh how I will miss him immensely. Unfortunately the longer we live, the more true friends we lose and feel hurt inside. Bernie was one of them. May God bless this treasured friend. RIP Bernie

Cindy and family, Lynne and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Bernie’s passing. I have many fond memories of growing up in Ashby with Bernie as my friend and teammate playing hockey. His determination and dedication took him from the part time delivery driver with Vogue on Charlotte St. to a wonderfully successful business in St. John’s. We always looked forward to seeing you both when the opportunity presented itself. He will be missed but fondly remembered.

Heave away now Bernie. The shore lines have been cast off, sails lifted into the wind and your vessel now heads out through the harbour of temporal time to endless day. No storms to batter, no inventory to move, no pressure to carry. There are no deadlines, challenges and the seals swim ahead of you as if leading you to some far distant peaceful harbour where the echo of your guitar strings fill the air with a sonnet. Thanks for standing with us , being one of us, and touching the business landscape with class. You will be missed but your craft and workmanship will be worn upon the shoulders and brow of many. Heave away lad and sail on to o your peaceful harbour.

You will be missed Coach! Thank you for your support and guidance as a hockey coach and as a person. I was a classmate and teammate to Jason growing up.

Your passion, kindness, compassion tonight me about the game and about being a good person. Bernie was the best coach I can remember I thank him for his dedication and sacrifice.

I wish your family peace and happiness in your memories.

David

God Bless!

Bern you will be missed. We had such a GREAT time playing soccer with and against (south men vs ramblers). Then going to Halifax with the All stars (HAHA). You were always a gentleman. And yes you could play soccer.

Love and Blessings to all the family. Many great memories of Bernie. Love to Bernie.

Cindy and family,
So very sorry to hear of Bernie’s passing. I remember him fondly from the many years at the Ladies Invitational at Bally Haly. I still have my leather coat I got the same year mom won hers from the golf tournament. Weather it was mom’s sealskin swing coat or my sealskin boots Bernie had a way of making everyone feel like family by the time they left. He was an amazing man, an amazing father and husband, an amazing creator, and a true gentleman and amazing human being. He will be dearly missed by everyone he touched with his kindness, humour, smile, and empathy. We have truly lost one of the greats. May all your precious memories bring you all much needed strength in the days ahead. Our deepest condolences to you all during this difficult time.

He was such a great friend of our family growing up in Sydney . We came from a large family and Bernie would joke that he was at our home so much that our father would ask our mother if that red head was one of ours . Bernie we all loved you and will miss you..

sorry to hear about your loss

Cindy, Darren, Jason and Nicole,

It’s not often in one’s lifetime that you are blessed with a friend who exudes some of the best character traits that can exist in a human being,; honesty, integrity, warmth, humor and love. That’s what Bernie shared with everyone he came in contact with,. He was always “ the glass is half full, never empty” type of guy and he demonstrated that until his last breath.
The enthusiasm which he embraced life was evident through his love of family and friends alike and his commitment to his career and community were certainly exemplary.
While we have lost a dear friend, we can’t help but feel blessed to have been fortunate enough to share in his company over so many years. Gone but never to be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

It is with a sadness in my heart as I send my condolences to the family of Bernie. I met Bernie many years ago at Vogue and I had the pleasure of using his service for my coats. Vogue is an absolute top notched first- class business. Bernie was true gentleman who had the art of storytelling and no doubt he could converse with anyone on the value of maintaining the fur industry that he represented so well. I could never wear one of his coats without feeling connected to him. Bernie has left a legacy that will be cherished for many years to come. To the family I can only say that I am very sorry for the loss of such a kind spirit. Go free Bernie and may you soar high. RIP to you Sir, my friend Bernie. God Bless.

We are so sad to hear of Bernie’s passing.. We know the last several years have been difficult for all of you but Bernie could not have made it as long as he did without the love and support of his family and friends. We will be thinking of you and praying for you as you navigate through this difficult time..
