January 25, 1944 to September 24, 2022

Obituary

Passed away suddenly at home on September 24th, 2022. Predeceased by loving wife Loretta McArthur (Vaughan) and his parents Kenneth and Dorothy Anne McArthur. Survived by daughter Elaine (Paul Follett) and son Andrew (Jillian Keough). Also left to mourn are two treasured grandchildren Olivia and Mason Follett, sister Susan Beveridge, sisters-in-Law Margaret (Garfield Avery) and Marilyn (Charlie Cofield), and brother-in-law Howard Vaughan (Linda). He will also be forever missed by his extended family of nieces and nephews. Brian will be always remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

Brian was born in Croydon, England, and moved to St. John’s from Europe in 1959 . After meeting and marrying Loretta, he went to Memorial University and was conferred with a degree in civil engineering in 1975. He began his career in consulting for municipal works, but the majority of his working life was for the City of Mount Pearl. He served first as Town Engineer, then as Town Manager and saw the growth of the Town and its transition to a City in 1988. He continued working with the City until his retirement in 2002.

In addition to his professional engineering career, he also contributed his time and energy in his volunteer efforts for public health care in the province. He served as a board member of the former Children’s Rehabilitation Centre and as the President of the Newfoundland Society for the Physically Disabled.  Brian was also a founding member of the Health Care Corporation of St. John’s, where, serving as a board member, he actively involved with the expansion of health services and the creation of Eastern Health.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Lorne Adams, Dr. Carol Joyce, Dr. Julia Trahey, and Dr. Calvin MacCallum for their care over the recent months and years.

“Perhaps passing through the gates of death is like passing quietly through the gate in a pasture fence. On the other side, you keep walking, without the need to look back. No shock, no drama, just the lifting of a plank or two in a simple wooden gate in a clearing. Neither pain, nor floods of light, nor great voices, but just the silent crossing of a meadow.” – Mark Helprin

To the McArthur family: I was saddened when I heard that Brian had passed away. I had the previledge to work with Brian for 18 years at city hall in the City of Mount Pearl. I always found that his door was always open whenever I had an issue to discuss with him or just drop in for a friendly chat. He was always there to listen whenever someone had a matter to be resolved and he always did his best to help. I extend my deepest condolences to Brian”s family in the loss of a fine gentleman. May he rest in peace.

For two years, 1994 to 1996, I worked at the planning department of the City of Mount Pearl under planner Stephen Jewczyk and enjoyed meetings with Brian. He was on top of things in the organization, friendly and approachable. He was devoted to his wife and her care. Condolences to his family and friends.

To the extended McArthur family – please accept my sincere condolences on Brian’s passing. Other than a few chance meetings I never had an opportunity to get to know him personally. I did however meet him on a number of occasions while sitting across the table from him as I represented CUPE and he – the City of Mt. Pearl. I always remember him as a man of character. He always listened to what you had to say; and when he spoke – he was respectful in his comments. He was a manager who would never intentionally harm any of his employees.
Rest in peace Brian.

To Elaine and Family. Sorry to hear of your father’s passing. Thoughts with you all.
