Passed peacefully away, one day short of his 76th birthday, Cecil Bramwell Smith. Predeceased by his father Maxwell. Leaving to mourn his mother Jane, siblings Dulcie Soper (Fred), Max (Rose), Linda Williams, Roy (Joan), Gary (Debbie), Clyde (Gloria). Nephews and nieces. Special friend Dwight Peckford and a huge circle of friends at Lanes retirement living and Vera Perlin. Our family would like to express our appreciation and love for the people at Lanes Retirement Living for the care they gave to Cecil and Mom. You went “above and beyond”!

Cecil received a traumatic brain injury at birth that left him handicapped for life. His speech was difficult to understand until you were around him for a while but if you were joking around with him, then having him call you an “arsehole” or telling you he was going to “kick you in the hole” was as plain as day and was always followed by a huge laugh. In 76 years Cecil never once cared what you would think if he felt the urge to dance. He never learned music, but he would take up a guitar and play it (badly) with the same gusto as any rock star (and he received more standing ovations than most for doing so). Cecil was special and never had any hidden agendas for personal gain in his mind when he met people. He wanted to have fun, give you a high 5 and always left you smiling.  He loved bowling and his friends at Vera Perlin and his new friends at Lanes Retirement Living. To them he was the life of the party and always a star!!!  Cecil could not speak well verbally but his attitude and his actions spoke volumes and affected lives around him. Cecil carried the label of “special” and “handicapped” but he leaves us wondering if maybe the rest of us are the ones that are impaired and perhaps we should all try and live a little more like Cecil did…. Dance when you feel like it and laugh and love genuinely.  We love you Cecil…. we miss you already…. Happy Birthday

Cecil will be resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 1-9 p.m. Monday April 11th and Tuesday, April 12th.

Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, April 13th, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel.  With internment next to our Dad at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. For those unable to attend the service it can be viewed by following the link at the top of the obituary on the Carnell website.

No flowers by request, donations in Cecil’s memory may be made to the Vera Perlin Society via this link https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/the-vera-perlin-charitable-foundation-inc/?utm_expid=.Zw6wDABWRgyB0oPClDzoRg.0&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.canadahelps.org%2Fen%2Fexplore%2Fcharities%2F%3Fq%3Dvera%2Bperlin.

Sincere condolences to Mrs. Smith and all of the Smith family.. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Uncle Cecil,

You were always such a bright light in our lives. I have very fond memories that feel like only yesterday of me as a young kid walking through Nans back door and you, with your best knit sweater on standing in the hallway ready to give me a big bear hug and excited to show me the new metal you just won or tell me about bowling. I can just picture you now and how you’d show me all your moves as u pretend to throw the bowling ball down the hall and then celebrate with your fists in the air yelling then followed by an air kick! (I’m laughing to myself while I write this) I’m so happy I have these memories! As we grew up, every time I would call Nan she would answer in the kitchen and you would pick up in the living room by pops chair. And say “Hi Nicole” I can still hear you now, telling me all about your day., then nan would tell you to hang up haha
You loved us immensely and always made sure to tell us that. I’ll always have you in my memories and in my heart forever! I know Gord and Brad feel the exact same way.
I don’t want to make this a sad thing, so I’m going to leave off with saying this.
Cecil, as you move on to your afterlife in heaven, There is no doubt in my mind that you are happy up there with poppy.
I also know you are still around us and will always be watching over us, cheering for us ; and dancing with us.
We love you to the moon and back!

Mrs Smith and Family.
Meeting Cecil while working with Compassion Care was such a joy, Cecil was such a beautiful soul, very independent and very compassionate to not only myself but the other caregivers. Cecil dearly loved his Mother, Sisters and Brothers. From the very moment I met Jane and Cecil I knew their home would be a beautiful place to work, the Children of Jane were so kind to me and I’m sure to the other workers as well, the time came when Jane and Cecil would move and I moved on but never never forgot either one, Covid came so I couldn’t visit . God be with you all , love to your Mom and just know you are so blessed to have been born into love. Violet linehan.

Mrs. Smith and Family
We are so sorry to hear of Cecils’ passing. He touched so many lives and we have many cherished memories. As neighbours who lived across the street we always marvelled at his patience waiting for the garbage truck to pass by so he could pick up everyone’s net and return them. He would come across the street and help Bill clean his car. Cecil was in charge of the hose and did a great job although there was this one time when he missed the car and Bill got the water full force and they high fives each other. They would always have a laugh about him getting soaked. We pray that your cherished memories of Cecil will be a source of comfort and peace for you as time goes by.
Sincerely
Bill and Linda Moulton

Mrs. Smith, Dulcie & families,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

Jane and family,
Sorry to hear about Cecil’s passing. We remember the many fun times we spent with him , camping , meals together and watching hockey games. We will miss him

Jane and Family:
Cecil was a great man. He loved God and we could see it when the music was played and he would raise his hands to Heaven and close his eyes and worship God. He made a great impression on me for which I am thankful. May God Bless your family. Jane, and give you all the comfort and peace that only God can give at this difficult time. Laura

It has been many years since I saw Cecil. If memory serves me correctly, one of the last times was in the driveway of your home on Topsail Road. I was bringing something to friends of Mom & Dad who lived next door to you when I saw Cec in your driveway. I could not pass up the chance to go over and chat with both of you. I got one of those special hugs. Cec was always happy…….something I remember from our childhood living on Blatch Ave. He was very well cared for and loved. I offer my deepest sympathy to you all at this difficult time. God’s Blessing! Therese Kelly

Aunt Jane & Family;

We are only now hearing of this sad news, Cecil was dearly loved by all who knew him, he was always there to kick up his heals & laugh doing what ever he could to put a smile on your face, which seemed to add to his happiness making others smile. We are also sorry but due to Mom’s health we can not be with you all during this time, but know you are in our prayers & our hearts are with you all.

I remember Cecil very well from my time growing up on Blatch Ave in the early 70’s. He was a few years older than I was but he was always there for a game of catch. From time to time he would even look out for me if he thought I needed help. I remember those years very fondly. Thinking of Cecil’s Mom and the entire Smith family at this very difficult time.. RIP Cecil
