Charles Lester Elton

January 6, 1950 to May 9, 2020

Obituary

Sadly, Charlie left us early on May 9, 2020.  We will miss his dry humour, wise counsel and astute leadership at the helm of Dodge City/Royal Garage Ltd for almost 50 years.  He was a keen hiker and enjoyed weekend treks along the East Coast Trail. As he often remarked, “On a fine day, there is no better place to be on this earth”. Charlie also enjoyed nurturing his annual tomato crop in his greenhouse.  Latterly, he was fortunate to fit in many travel adventures around the world and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro during one of these outings.  Charlie was down-to-earth, quietly generous, opinionated, and principled.  His sons Sandy and Greg, and their mother Cathy survive him.  While his parents Charlie and Margaret (O’Brien) Elton and brother Brian predeceased him.  He leaves memories with siblings Dorothy Elton (Walter) and David Elton (Cavelle) and well as nephew Michael Elton.  Deepest gratitude to Cousin Margie O’Brien Hand and Charlie’s brother David for dealing with logistics that enabled Charlie to stay in the comfort and calm of his home during his recent illness.  Charlie preferred a quiet leaving with family and friends remembering his life, steadfastness, and courage.  In memory of Charlie, donations may be made to EAST COAST TRAIL ASSOCIATION: https://www.gifttool.com/donations/Donate?ID=2023&AID=1964&_mid_=8656

Julie and Clayton Smith

My sincere sympathy to the Elton family. Charlie and I shared a special relationship since we were patients at the old General Hospital back in the 1960’s and were friends ever since, although we didn’t spend a lot of time together after. Of course, our families have been friends in business for many years as my father, Fred Adams, was a partner in Adams Service Station for over 40 years.

Our Condolences to the Elton Family
So sorry to hear of Charlies passing i have many fond memories working for Charlie and his father before before him he really showed me the way in the business of selling at the Royal Garage he was strict but a very kind person in many many ways.

Go rest high on that mountain Charlie your work on earth is done my dearest friend.. I did notice Bowering Park where you walked everyday shut down as soon as you were admitted to hospital and didn’t reopen until you left this earth for your next adventure. . I know you were right in your element climbing those stairs to heaven taking a little break while having a good look all around on your way to be with your mom just in time for Mothers Day.

He was a very kind man with a great personality and will surely be greatly missed by many.

My sincere condolences to the Elton Family, Greg,Sandy.Cathy & David so sorry. I have many stories to tell of the Elton family. The Royal Garage is situated on the property which my Dad owned and which Charlie Sr purchased many years ago.. We watched the business expand over the years to what it is today..We felt the Royal Garage and the Eltons were part to the family neighborhood. Many of the younger Dunne children who grew up in the neighborhood played on the car lot, teased the watchmen, played with Brian & Charlie. They have lots of memories today of the Royal Garage and the Elton Family.. My Mom and Charlie Sr were great friends. Janet, my niece worked with Charlie Sr and Charlie Jr for 39 years. She had great respect for both . I tell this story because today the neighborhood and family feel the sorrow of the Elton Family. Ever remembered in Dunn’s Lane RIP.

I only had the privilege of knowing this man for a short time i was his roommate for about a week at St. Clare’s hospital .As we were not allowed any visitors so we formed a brotherly bond and helped each other as much as possible, I think we could have been good friends, deepest condolences to the family.RIP my friend

My sincere condolences to the Elton Family on Charlie’s passing, much too soon. There are many stories to tell of Charlie’s travels. One I really love is Charlie traveled to South Africa to meet the family of Peter Windsor. Peter’s sister, Mary Emma Eugenie Windsor married Charles F. Lester, our great-grandfather. In fact three years ago some of Peter’s family came to St. John’s to visit. RIP.

So sorry to hear of Charlie’s passing. I will miss Charlie’s passionate discussions we had with all what was wrong with the car business….. occasionally we would talk about the many good things about it. As he always called me “young Fella” I suddenly feel much older. We never met too many times in person but communicated by phone lots…..he was away ahead of the Social Distance protocols I guess… Rest in peace my friend.

So sorry to hear of Charlie’s passing. We were in many classes together when we both completed the B. Comm. program at Mun. A very good man is now gone. Condolences to the Elton family.

Charlie was a kind, generous, charming man. We knew him mainly through hiking. It was his passion. He knew people everywhere through his business, of which he was very proud. He knew a trail or scoped one out wherever he went. If he was by himself he’d leave his ‘pedal-bike’ at one end and pick it up on the way home. Never daunted by weather or terrain he loved being on a trail to anywhere. He documented his adventures on his many disposable cameras; you know if you were one of his subjects. The special delivery of fresh cod tongues and scallops to Golden Bay in a dense fog was particularly memorable. The Southern Shore was a favorite destination, he had very fond memories of trips there with his father. We hiked with Charlie often and are proud that his name is one of those we thanked in our hiking book. He will be missed.

Sandy,
Sending many thoughts and prayers to you and your family during this difficult time. Rest In Peace Mr. Elton

My sympathies go out to the family as Charlie has left us way too early. My introduction would go back to around 1977 or so, being a young golfer at Bally Haly, Dad would let me caddy on Saturday mornings in a foursome that included Jim Chalker, Ray Halley and Charlie. I learned so much about the game and life on those mornings and Charlie was a dear friend to Dad, speaking highly about him at all times. “Watch the old man”, he would exclaim. Will miss his dry humour and straight talk. I am delighted that he was able to embrace the great outdoors as much as he did after putting the clubs away. God Bless

Dear Cathy , Sandy , Greg and all family members ,
To say that Charlie was a unique and special human being is an understatement . I only got to know Charlie from meeting him in Bowring Park while walking my poodles . He always greeted me with a friendly hello and always made me feel good with his compliments about how I cared for my dogs . I always came away feeling so positive .
Charlie is mostly known by walkers in Bowring Park as “ the very friendly guy who has no dogs but always picks up after irresponsible pet owners ! “
How many people would do this ? It speaks volumes about his love and respect of nature and hiking and keeping our enviornment clean and beautiful . He was admired and respected so much . One of a kind he surely was . I as well as so many will miss his presence happily walking by enjoying the park, never passing by without saying hello .
Rest In Peace Charlie ! You will be missed ! ❤️

It was a sad day yesterday to hear that Charlie had passed away. He was a loyal family friend to our parents for many years and part of the Charlie, Keith, Ray and Sam group that shared many laughs and stories over the years…
I’ll never forget the time Neil and I were hiking the Flamber Head Path and met Charlie with a friend hiking from the opposite direction. We intended to hike half way and back as we only had one car at LaManche. They had a car at each end and Charlie insisted on taking our vehicle to Brigus South so we could enjoy the entire hike. A great day. Deepest condolences to the Elton family.

I was very, very sad to learn of Charlie’s passing. My deepest sympathy to his family. I’ll always think of him hiking the East Coast Trail.

To The Elton Family,
I am heartbroken and so very sorry for your loss. Charlie was a wonderful man. I will certainly miss his humour. He gave me a career at Dodge City for which I’m very thankful. He helped so many families over the years in a silent way. He dearly loved his hikes and travels. His face lit up recounting how amazing the nature was on his last vacation or some interesting fact about the venue. Such a kind soul who will be dearly missed.
Please take comfort in your memories of him. He was one of a kind. Rest in peace Charlie.

The Elton Family,
Our deep and sincere condolences on Charlie’s (AKA “Flipper”) untimely passing. We are deeply saddened and will remember him fondly for the many hikes we took on the East Coast Trail and all the great times we shared. RIP
Barry & Glenda

I learned of Charlie’s health issues just over a week ago but was truly saddened when I learned that he passed away. I have known and held him in high regard for over 50 years and always enjoyed a chance meeting whether it was hiking on the Skerwink Trail or enjoying a winter walk in Bowring Park. Last time I saw him was during a pre-pandemic walk in Bowring Park when we had an amusing back and forth banter about the need to replace his $1 cotton gloves with a proper pair of winter gloves., or at least put on two pairs to keep his hands warm. That discussion went back and forth for about two minutes, much to the enjoyment of us both. Every chance meeting with Charlie was like that and now that Bowring Park is reopening, I sure will miss his presence and the enjoyable banter.
My sincere condolences to his family

I am very sorry to hear about Charile, my thoughts are with you and your family. Christine Stead

An interesting man, Charlie Elton. I will fondly remember Charlie for introducing me to the EC T and the many hikes we did as he ensured I got to hike all the trails. Cathy, Sandy and Greg I was shocked to hear about Charlie’s demise.
