Charles Patrick Daly of St. John’s has left this world, at his home with his family at his side, aged 89,on July 25th, 2024.

Charlie was of a caring, impassioned, light-hearted and genuine nature, he was a friend to all, never judgemental, thoroughly enjoyed gatherings of friends and family, a world traveller, news junkie, consummate host, sportsman and ultimate family man. He saw the good in everyone, was a gentleman, celebrated life’s gifts and took setbacks in stride. His oft reply to the greeting, “How are you today Charlie?” was… “Great, now that you’re here!” He wasn’t perfect but he wasn’t far from it. He married Diane Dunne in 1961, the family blossomed to four children, a ‘dream’ son in-law and ‘dream’ daughter in-law and five grandsons.

Family was always Charlie’s priority. The ‘patriarch’ loved his family, and he was dearly loved by all of us. As long as we were all healthy and happy he was perfectly content. He looked forward to, and enjoyed every family gathering, right to his last week. He had close, personal relationships with his children, their spouses and his five grandsons, enthusiastically following their achievements and successes with encouragement and joyful pride. ‘Chuck and Di’ were the ultimate support network for the whole clan. There are so many good memories. At the end, as always, he was gracious and extremely thankful for his many blessings. He did his job well and led by example in hard work and ethical standards. His legacy is profound, we know it, are grateful and will never forget.

A St. Bon’s alumni and graduate of Dalhousie School of Dentistry in 1962, Charlie went on to practice Dentistry for over forty years. He loved his work and the social interaction. His altruistic nature flowed down to his patients, as he often provided care pro bono. Charlie was a distinguished professional: Fellow of the American College of Dentists; Chairman of the Board (1984-1988) and Registrar (1988-1998) for the Newfoundland Dental Association; Award of Merit, Canadian Dental Association; Distinguished Service Award and Lifetime Member, Newfoundland Dental Association; Outstanding Aluminus, Dalhousie University; and cited by the Pierre Fauchard Academy for Contributions to the Art of Dentistry.

Leaving to celebrate his life: the indefatigable Diane; children – Lisa (Craig Dobbin), Chris (Nancy), Heather and Sara; the five grandsons – Zachary Dobbin (Rachel), Jake Dobbin, Conor, Owen and Declan Daly; Diane’s siblings – Andrea and Roger, and her in-laws, Ruth Dunne, Mike Power, and Jeanette Dunne, as well as many, many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

With treasured memories to the loved ones that passed before him: his parents, Charlie and Kathleen Daly; parents’ in law, Alonzo and Mary Dunne; brothers’ in law, Jim, Blaise, Peter Dunne and Ray Manning; sisters in law, Jane Power and Lona Dunne Warren; and so many loving and loyal friends.

Our family extends heartfelt appreciation for all the kindness, compassion and support given to Charlie by his care providers: Dr. Stephen Major; Dr. Cliona McManamon; Dr. Marie O’Dea; Nurses Melanie, Suzanne, and Amanda; all of the Paramedics who assisted, especially Casey and Leslie; and Olivia, who was with us when Charlie passed away.

Most important in Charlie’s life was his wife, Diane. She was the apple of his eye, the love of his life, and his reason for being. It was a love affair that he carried to the very end.

Please join us to celebrate Charlie’s extraordinary life and legacy:

To the Daly family
Charlie and Diane have been dear friends of our family for 60+ years. I have many memories of the 6 Gillespie kids visiting Dr Daly as our dentist and in later years at many social events with my parents as they were in their close circle of dear friends.
I am so sorry for your loss and hope that happy memories will bring comfort in the days ahead.

I knew Charlie through his dedicated dental services to the children of the province at the Janeway Hospital where he was on staff from 1967-1982 and Chief of Dentistry in 1976-1977.
I enjoyed meeting him either casually in the hallways or occasionally about a mutual patient. He was kind, helpful, friendly and uplifting.
Through the years, our bonds extended through his and our children.
Our sincere condolences to Diane, Lisa, Chris, Heather and Sara, He will be long and fondly remembered,

Diane, a few weeks ago I met you at a concert at St. Theresa’s Church and recounted to you a story about a never forgotten kindness by your husband Dr. Daley. My late brother, Frank Evans, (a friend of Peter’s). was 25 years old and in St. Clare’s Hospital suffering from terminal cancer in 1968. There was no palliative care; there were no cancer cocktails; no chemotherapy – one just suffered and suffered he did. Added to this misery Frank had a terrible tooth ache. You came to visit him and left the room as quickly as you came only to return with Dr. Daley in tow. The doctor cleared the room and when he was finished Frank no longer had a toothache. Fifty six years have come and gone but the memory Dr. Daley’s inherent kindness and deep dedication to his profession have been told and retold and never forgotten in our family. Thank you both and please accept my deepest and most sincere sympathy in the loss of a man who could ” do no harm.”. Flo Evans
