It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Clifton Edward Halliday, age 91.  He left this life in the loving arms of his youngest daughter, Mary Sue Adams at his home in Portugal Cove-St. Philips’. Cliff was born on a stormy December day on his parent’s farm on Nagle’s Hill, where he was raised and spent his early years as a farmer, learning the skills of farming and running a business from his father. Eventually, he went on to own Halliday’s Meat Market, a staple in downtown St. John’s and one of the last surviving family owned butcher shops, started in 1914. In later years many will recall Cliff driving out the Tolt Road in his wine colored Suburban to his store, where he engaged in banter with all who came and went.

Cliff and his wife Marie raised their family on Nagle’s Hill. In later years, the family home was located in St. Philips. After Marie’s passing, Cliff became the center of his family, each member valued and loved dearly by him. One of his most cherished family traditions was Sunday dinner, which brought him such joy- the more people around the table the merrier. He often shared his many stories and his years of wisdom with a gleam in his eye and a sage message for any who would listen.

He is predeceased by his parents, Mary and William Halliday, wife, Marie (Mealey) Halliday, daughter, Gina Marie. He is the last among his siblings to go to his eternal rest. He leaves with many precious memories, his children: Joyce Penney (Robert), Chris Halliday (Sandy), Clifton (Kip) Halliday (Cyndy), Mary Sue Adams (Rod). Grandchildren: Christopher Halliday (Diane), Ashley Lee (Adam), Brandon Halliday (Courtney), Jonathan Penney (Meghan), Tyler Adams (Kayla), Gina Adams (Andrew), Sarah Austin (Avery), Kelsie Halliday (Brandon). Great Grandchildren: Ben Halliday, Brianna and Caleb Lee, Lela and Ava Halliday, Owen and Maeve Penney, Andrew, Norah, Eli Adams, and Jonah Austin. Also, special friend Irene.

Cliff was able to remain in his home, as was his wish, until his last days with the love and support of Joyce, Mary Sue and Cyndy. He was a fortunate man to have such a gift. Family surrounded him in life and in his final days.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral, 329 Freshwater Road, from 10-9 p.m. Tuesday, September 23rd and Wednesday September 24th.

Funeral service will take place on Thursday, September 25th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (The Kirk). Interment to follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory maybe made to a charity of one’s choice.

Joyce, Chris, Kip, Mary Susan, and family. Our deepest condolences to you all on the loss of your dad. There are tons of memories that surface when I think of your family as we grew up on Nagles Hill. Memories of the Halliday brothers heading off in a big Suburban to the meat market the same time every day. Keep your great memories of your dad close to get you this difficult time. Rest in peace, “Uncle” Cliff. Debbie (Eustace) and Steve Power.

My father knew Mr. Halliday well. As a young girl, on our Saturday’s together, my father’s and my last stop would be at Hallidays for custom cut T-Bone steaks! The only downside was that they both talked so much that it took forever to get out of there. Funny how life comes full circle, and thankfully so. I now live two blocks from Halliday’s and I shop there frequently., as was quickly pointed out to me…”sure you’re here every second day”. That’s why they’re the Hallidays. They know their craft and they know their regulars. My sincerest heartfelt condolences to the Halliday family for your loss from SuzAnne, and my son Christopher.

Dear Kip and family,
Sincere condolences from the Tooton family. From about age 3, I remember going to your grandfather’s butcher shop and I’m so glad I can continue to drop by your store when I’m back home. Lots of memories over many years of your fine family. Take good care and carry on the tradition!

Joyce, Chris, Kip and Mary Sue

Our condolences on Uncle Cliff’s passing. I’ll miss our chats catching up at the shop when I’m home visiting. As a child, I’ll always remember Cliff, Bill and John behind the counter when grandmother was looking after me at the shop.

My deepest condolences to you and your families on your great loss. I didn’t know your Dad very well but he always spoke when I would come to the store on my visits from Gander.
Even though it is the way of life the loss of a parent is never easy especially when you are a close knit family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Condolences to the Halliday family on the passing of their loved one. May he RIP
..

Condolences to his family. We remember him hanging around in Halliday’s store behind the butcher counter, telling some tales. He knew my grandfather Fred Kenny and family at Kenny’s farm on Portugal Cove Road, where Holiday Inn is now. So many people knew him and his sons. The store is a fixture and a gathering place downtown.

Sending condolences to all of the Halliday family on the passing of their Dad. May he RIP.

A gentleman, a business man, a family man.
Loved by family and countless loyal customers over the decades. He will be missed.

Sincerest condolences to the Halliday family . He was the nicest man…I often went to the shop with my mother on Saturday, and went myself when I had my own family. If I took one of my children with me, Cliff would always cut off a piece of balogna or cheese to give them….they loved it! I’m sure if my mother’s memory was still intact, she would be devastated. She was very fond of Cliff, and enjoyed every shift she worked at the store. RIP Cliff.

Memories for the Family!

“Just close your eyes and you will see,
all the memories that you have of me.
Just sit and relax and you will find,
I’m still there inside your mind.
Don’t cry for me now that I’m gone,
for I am in the land of song.

There is no pain, there is no fear
so dry away that silent tear.
Don’t think of me in the dark and cold,
for here I am, no longer old.
I’m in a place now with my MARIE … my love!
that’s known to you all, as “up above”.

So live each day well and know I am proud,
for I was blessed with a wonderful crowd
Of family and friends, at home, at the shop,
and I will always love you … that will never stop”. .

To Jonathan, Kip, Chris, and the Halliday family, please accept my condolences on Mr. Halliday’s passing. I started going to Hallidays about 15 years ago, initially for the delicious sausage and pudding.. As I got to know Mr. Halliday, Kip, Chris and the rest of the staff, my visits became more about laughs, camaraderie and good conversations. Whenever I go there, I feel like I’m visiting old friends. I remember Mr. Halliday would often be sitting on cases of beer (on the beer as he would say). You rarely get that kind of experience in a business anymore. Mr. Halliday is leaving a fine legacy in the capable hands of his family. Sorry for your loss.
