The son of Samuel Frederick Morgan and Victoria (Mabel) Anthony, Cyril Morgan was proud of his Cupids’ roots. Every few years he would take one or two of his children to visit the cemetery and show us where his family was resting. The trip often included a visit to “The Cupids Dig” and a lunch at the café in Cupids.
He was more than saddened by the January 2024 death of his beloved Patricia. On one of his last days, he said that he had seen her face. It was as if she had visited him. We trust they are united in Heaven.
Cyril leaves behind Gail (Garrett) Gosse, Gary (Joy), Jane (Roy Naugler), Peter (Bernice), and Andrew (Karen); his grandchildren Anthony and Ryan Gosse, Holly and Kelsey Morgan, and Abigail (Abby) and Samuel (Sam) Morgan; and great-grandchildren Logan, Catherine, and Josephine (Josie) Gosse.
He went into pre-med (where he met Patricia) at Memorial College because his mother wanted him to become a doctor. She got part of her wish as he was a Medic in the Armed Forces Reserves.
However, his head was into figures, and he became an accountant. He was one of those people who knew the patterns of mathematics – e.g. he could tell the square or the square root of any number within seconds. In addition to his CGA and CPA he also was an FCGA and FCPA.
From Accounting, he moved on to building houses, apartments and office buildings with his company, Nuport. He was a pioneer when he partnered with CMHC to create affordable apartments for seniors and people with disabilities. A leader in the industry, he was President of both the NL and the Canadian Homebuilders Associations.
He had a passion for tennis and table tennis. He was a founding member of the Riverdale Tennis Club and for years he served on the Executive. He also supported the Green Belt Club. He won numerous trophies in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles; at the local, provincial, and national levels. He played at both the Canada Summer Games (tennis) and Canada Winter Games (table tennis). He was the first from this province to play in the Canadian Open Tennis Championship. In 1990 he was inducted into the NL Tennis Hall of Fame recognizing his outstanding contributions to the sport of tennis. In 1997 he was ranked 7th in Canada for the 60-and-over group.
Rotary was very important to Cyril. He joined the Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest in 1971. He was the Club President 1990-1991. In 2011, he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow which is the highest award that Rotary bestows.
He was a hobby gardener. He had a green house for vegetables, as did Patricia. So, every year there was a competition between them as to whose tomatoes were the best etc. Many in his circle of friends and relatives would remember that he gave them a potted maple tree sapling.
He and Patricia travelled until well into their 80’s. They loved to learn about new cultures and to understand other people. The more exotic, the better! They explored almost every continent. Then, when they were too old for that, they became snowbirds.
To quote the Tiffany Staff: “A beautiful gentleman through and through! We will miss seeing him in the fireside lounge. He always enjoyed being part of the action and being engaged in whatever was happening. A huge, Mr. Morgan will be missed by his Tiffany Village family”.
The family will be accepting visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home at 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday, August 5 from 4-7pm. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, August 6 at 11 am, with a reception to follow in our lower lounge. His wishes were that we donate to a charity instead of sending flowers.
Forever in our hearts and forever loved.

To the family of Cyril Morgan…i met your Dad. Many years ago through tennis when i was first invited to play on his court with another friend. There were many games of tennis after that and many new friendships. The last time I saw your Dad was about 10 years ago at a fundraiser dinner, when he came to our table to say hello.I I`ve thought of him many times over the years and only recently asked someone about him but they didn’t have any information and last week I heard he had passed away… It was heartbreaking to hear…..
Sending my sincerest condolences to the Morgan family on the passing of your Dad. I had the honour of getting to know both your parents while caring for them at Tiffany village. I marvelled at the wonderful life they lived, and their accomplishments. No matter how often I visited ,your father met me with a smile. God bless him
To the family of Mr. Morgan. I’ve only just seen this notice. Sincere condolences for your loss. He was a lovely man. I met him while working at Chalker, Green & Rowe many moons ago as he was a long time client there.. He was always so gracious with all whom he met in or outside the office. He lived a fine life. RIP Mr. Morgan. 💐
My deepest condolences to you Jane and your family with the passing of your dad. May you cherish the good memories of his presence with all of you… Our thoughts & prayers in this challenging time.
Please accept my condolence of the passing of your dad. Cyril and I had many games of doubles at his court in Hogan’s pond. His competitive streak never lessened but we always ended the game with a laugh. Remember the nice times which will keep memories alive. Rest peacefully bud!

We were so very sorry to hear about your father’s passing.
Your parents were such kind neighbours. We have fond memories of them swimming past our dock in the evenings, always offering a cheerful wave and hello. His offer of his beloved ping pong table (we sadly had no room for it) and his kindness in opening up the tennis court for our boys to enjoy, are lasting reminders of his thoughtfulness.
Please know we are thinking of you and sending our deepest condolences.
With sympathy,

Gail, Gary and Family,
School mates we may have been, but Rotary NW brought Cyril into my life, to reconnect with the Family. He was a cherished member of the Club and very generous of many things, including his time and collegiality.
He will be greatly missed by me, but I understand the loss to your family.
I will be unable to attend the gathering or funeral, but know that I am thinking of you all, remembering my time with Cyril. Hope we can get together soon.
Best,
JPA, Ferryland

Jane and the Morgan family, condolences on the loss of your Dad. I knew him from playing tennis and also as part of the Executive of the Tennis Hall of Fame Committee. He was truly a fine gentleman. He and your Mom were a great team. I too visited their beautiful gardens. I even have a very large rock in my garden from theirs.
He was so proud of all of you.
Hopefully all the wonderful memories you have will help ease the pain of your loss as you celebrate a long life, well lived. RIP Cyril

Jane and Gail,
I was very saddened to hear of the passing of your father Cyril. My deepest condolences to your entire family.
Your father will always hold a special place in my heart. He was a mentor and friend for me after my father passed away. He took on a role that he didnt have too, and along with John Roil, he giuded and cared for me when I needed it most. I will never forget his warmth, words of advise, conversations about life, and the care he showed for my well being. I am forever grateful for what he did.
I will not be able to attend his funeral as I live outside the province, but I will be sure to visit him when I do return. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Rest in peace Mr. Morgan.

Deepest condolences and warmest thoughts to Jane and to all of the extended Morgan family for your loss, from Steven, Ying and all of our family.
Our sincere condolences from the Anthony family on Cyril’s passing. He was a wonderful man, always held in high regard and a trusted and beloved cousin (more like a brother), to our father, Gordon.
Sylvia and Gordon had many adventures with Cyril and Pat over the years and we all have fond memories, visiting them at their country home during our childhood.
Rest in peace, Cyril.
Gail and Jane, so sorry for your loss.
Jane and family,
As you know, many years ago Cyril and I were joint executors of the estate of an elderly gentleman who left surviving a young son. I immediately recognized the very kind, supportive and caring side of Cyril. His compassionate and sincere dedication to helping that young man demonstrated the true qualities of a fine gentleman..
His life and passing, while obviously a sad moment for you all right now, will in time define the hallmark of a life well lived. You should then celebrate his memory with the same gentle smile that was so much Cyril’s style.
RIP, my friend.
John

To the family of Cyril. So sorry to hear of his passing. I met him almost monthly when I went to Tiffany Tower for a worship service in the chapel. Jane, We a sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. To you and all your family. Our prayers and thought’s are with you all, RIP Mr. Morgan
So sorry to hear that Cyril Morgan has left us. I always enjoyed his lovely smile, and his wave, upon seeing him on the second floor at Tiffany. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.
So sorry to hear of Cyril Morgan’s passing . If there was ever a gentleman in St. John’s, it was Mr. Morgan. Even in later years, when he was challenged from a medical perspective , he never lost his touch. I always enjoyed dropping in for a chat at Tiffany Village every time I saw that his door was open . He may not have known who I was but he welcomed me with that great smile of his and thanked me for dropping by. Despite his failing memory , I would occasionally mention our Newfoundland dog India from the days when we lived across the street on Cherry Hill Road and that seemed to put a twinkle in his eye.
I will miss our occasional chats and may the family cherish the memories of this wonderful person as they grieve the loss.
Regards
Chris O’Dea
