D. Bradford L. Wicks, Q.C.

July 11, 1959 to June 25, 2022

Obituary

Our beloved husband and father D. Bradford L. Wicks passed away on June 25th, 2022 surrounded by his family. He is predeceased by his father Judge Lloyd Wicks and mother Eileen Wicks. Lovingly remembered by his wife of thirty-seven years, Donna, his daughter, Hilary (Neil), his sons Spencer (Heather) and Justin, his sisters Valerie (Fraser), Pamela (Everard), and Sandra (Peter). Also left to mourn are his many nieces, nephews, and large circle of friends and colleagues.

Brad was born in Botwood, Newfoundland and Labrador and moved around the province with his parents and sisters during his childhood years. Brad received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979 and his Master of Business Administration degree in 1989 from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. Brad graduated from Dalhousie Law School and was called to the bar in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1982. He commenced his practice with O’Neil, O’Reilly and Noseworthy and worked as a Crown prosecutor before joining Roebothan McKay Marshall in 1989. Brad practiced with Roebothan McKay Marshall for over thirty years and served as the managing partner at the firm for almost two decades. Throughout his professional career, Brad was a mentor to many young lawyers (including his own daughter) and could always be counted on to provide reasoned, sound, and principled counsel to any who sought it. Brad was well respected in the legal community and was a considered a true gentleman by everyone with whom he interacted.

Brad was a devoted husband and father and put family above all else in his life. Despite a busy professional career, Brad always made time for his family and while he is no longer with them, that love and support will remain forevermore.

He was a man of faith and deeply committed to his Church. Brad was a long-time congregant at the Anglican Parish of St. Mary the Virgin and served as the Chancellor and a Canon of the Anglican Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.

Brad was a beacon in his community and served on many boards and volunteer committees during his lifetime including the Board of Regents for Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Ronald McDonald House Board, and the Law Society Education Committee. He received the Alumni Honour Award from the Faculty of Business of Administration and his Queen’s Counsel designation in 2007.

The family would like to give special recognition to Dr. Peter Rockwood and Beverley Rockwood who provided invaluable guidance, support, and friendship during Brad’s final days.

Brad was diagnosed with ALL leukemia in 2009. His sister Valerie gave him the gift of thirteen additional years with his family through her bone marrow donation. The family would like to recognize the excellent care provided by transplant team at the Health Science Centre since Brad’s diagnosis.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 28th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will take place at the Anglican Parish of St. Mary the Virgin on Wednesday, June 29th at 11 a.m.

Donna and Family,

Carol and I were greatly saddened after receiving news last week from our son of Brad’s passing while we were out of province. I met Brad a long time ago when we were new members on St. Mary’s Vestry. First impressions are lasting and at that time I met a very nice person who quickly gained my respect and admiration in how he conducted himself and treated others. Although I have had few interactions with Brad in recent years I am aware of his many contributions in supporting others while he and Donna raised a fine family. We pass on our deepest condolences.

I was deeply saddened today to read of Brad’s passing.. I was a client of Brad’s from 2004 until 2011. Throughout this period of time I grew to think of Brad as a friend, as well as my brilliant lawyer. I always inquired about him whenever I had business with the law firm. Donna and family,
My condolences on Brad’s passing. He was always a supportive and helpful mentor when I started my legal career. It was evident that he cared deeply for his family and enjoyed being active in the legal community and the community at large. He will be missed by many.

Brad and I were called to the bar in the same year. I came to know him quite well when he was a crown prosecutor and I was defense council. In later years, we would be in contact in relation to real estate and civil matters. Throughout our contact with each other, I found Brad to be a good guy and a straight shooter. With that said, I am going to miss our bantering and contact. Keeping his family in my thoughts.

Donna and family,

I am so sad to learn of Brad’s death. He was my class mate and team mate on the case competitions in what is many years ago now but just seems like a minute. He was always very wise and very kind. Our worlds touched again as part of the Shallaway family. You and your families will be in my prayers. Brad, rest in peace. Your kindness touched so many people.
Susan Trim (Pereira)

Donna, Hilary, Spencer and Justin.
I am so sorry to hear about Brad’s passing. He was not only my personal lawyer but a friend. He was also an advisor on my crime novels and I don’t know if he told you yet, but he gave me his permission to name a character (a lawyer) in my next novel (Operation Masonic) after him.

Throughout the process, Brad gave me his free legal advice and saved me hours of research. I joked with him that it was kind of that he did notify
the police when he receive emails from me titled, “Can you still inherit money from someone you murdered?” I appreciate that.
Thankfully he had a good sense of humour. The novel will be out in August and Donna, I will make sure you receive a copy.
God Bless,
Helen C. Escott

Donna, Hilary, Spencer, and Justin.

It is with great sadness that I learned yesterday of Brad’s passing. Brad was an early mentor, role model, and a significant influence upon me during my early years in practice as an articling clerk and an associate at the firm. I often sought his advice and his counsel on legal issues and he willingly gave it. I often accompanied him to court in those days. He was an excellent tactician in the courtroom, and I learned greatly from his example. Brad was a supporter of my later career choice to serve s a legal officer in the military. But most of all, Brad was a great friend and man of integrity who very much saw legal practice as a service profession. Brad had a wonderful sense of humour, and we often shared jokes from time to time.
I know that together, you will cherish Brad’s memory always. I will certainly never forget him.
My sincere condolences to you all.

Donna and family, We are so sorry to hear of Brad’s passing.. Please accept our sincere condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. Eric & Jean.

All of St. Peter’s Anglican Church (Conception Bay South) family would like to send heartfelt condolences to Canon Wick’s family and friends at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Donna and family,
I was so sorry to hear this news yesterday. Brad and I were called to the bar together 40 years ago, and we have remained friends since that event. He was a wonderful colleague, and a model example to all members of the Law Society. Yes he was a super-family man and husband and father, but he was also a super-community man, giving so much time on a volunteer basis. My sincere condolences to you.

Donna, Hilary, Spencer and Justin

We worked together in the Crown Attorney’s office and both moved to be with Williams, Harris, Roebothan and McKay. Donna, Hilary, Justin and Spencer,
It was with much sadness that we were brought to the realization that a great guy, a loyal church family brother, an outstanding individual had passed from our midst. We realize that the past years have not seen him in good health but, who would have realized that! There was always that smile, a sincere handshake, a confident, “I’m fine,” and the usual, “I hope all is well with you.” These are the things that will forever be missing on Sunday Mornings. But they are memories that we will always cherish. But we realize that this is a much greater loss to you. And so, we want to offer our most sincere condolences to you and the assurance that you are in our thoughts and prayers. May you, through your faith, be given the strength to endure those sad and difficult days ahead. With every blessing: Eugene & Shirley Castella.

Donna – I was so sad to hear about the loss to you and your family. Thinking of you all. Hugs.

To Donna, Hilary, Spencer, Justin and Brad’s siblings and family. Brad Wicks was not only an outstanding husband brother and father but a kind and gentle human being who greatly contributed to his Province and profession. Since the time Brad joined our firm in 1989 he was the consummate professional exhibiting academic excellence, hard work and an ethical strength beyond reproach. He unselfishly devoted his time to his church and community and he has left Newfoundland and Labrador a better place because of his contribution. His courage and quiet strength throughout his illness has been an inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing him. Sincere and deepest sympathy to Donna Family and Friends

Donna and family;

We have known Brad, both professionally and through volunteer boards. A very knowledgeable, learned professional who excelled in everything he did second was not in his mantra and when faced with a heath situation that would see most quit. There was no quit in Brad and he carried on in family life. Business life and volunteer life as he always did before.
Brad will be remembered and missed by many..
Treasure your memories , I know there are many.

Donna and family, so very sorry to hear of Brad’s passing. Thinking of you.

Our sincere condolences to Donna, their family and many many friends. We were honoured to know Brad, who treated everyone with respect and dignity. He will be truly missed and always remembered.
Donna please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything at all that we can do.

So broken hearted to hear this news. Brad was an incredible friend and mentor. He was generous, compassionate and caring. We are so grateful for the more than 25 years of friendship and support Brad provided our family. He has left such a legacy. Hilary, Spencer and Justin – He spoke about how proud he was of each of you and the paths you each have carved out for yourselves when we last spoke. His greatest role, second to being your Mom’s partner in life, was always as your Dad. Donna, we are sending you all our love and deepest condolences at this very difficult time. Watching you care for & love Brad was inspiring. May he rest peacefully in the warmth of your love.

I was so shocked to learn of the passing of Mr. Brad Wicks. I knew him personally from my days at St. Mary the Virgin, as well as, in other personal capacities. Brad was an unassuming but a stalwart soul who managed life and family with such apparent ease. It would be an under statement to say that Brad will be missed but know that his legacy will live on professionally in his daughter and personally in his dear family. St Mary the Virgin owes the Wick’s family a great deal for their steadfast devotion and their endless acts of kindness over the years. Be free Brad and may you rest in peace. Blessings for your soul and blessings for all of those you leave behind. In Christ, may Brad find his eternal place with his God and Maker. Amen.

Sincere condolences to the Wicks family from the Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University.

Donna and family ,
