Obituary

“Take my hand, I‘ll lead the way. Don’t be scared, don’t be afraid. I’ll bring you home, I’ll keep you safe. ‘Cause I’m fearless, nothing that can break me, hero of my story, I’m a warrior”. Fearless – Kellie Loder.  (This is the anthem that Danielle lived by.)

On June 2nd 2023, our beautiful angel Danielle left this earth at the young age of 32 in the loving arms of her soulmate / husband, Shayne McGrath. Her journey with Glioblastoma came to an end and she entered the home of the Lord. Danielle left this world in the same way she approached her illness – fearlessly and with grace, peace, courage and love. Throughout her journey, she made sure everyone around her knew how much she loved them, and it was no different in her final weeks. Despite the prognosis and seriousness of her illness, she “lived her best life” and would want us all to do the same. In Danielle’s words, “Sometimes life doesn’t go as expected but it’s still amazing!”.

Danielle excelled at everything she touched. As a young teenager, she excelled in hockey, and in 2007 she advanced to the Canada Winter Games team in Whitehorse, Yukon (left wing #44). She was an amazing hockey coach and role model to young kids for over a decade, sharing her passion for the game. Danielle excelled in university, with quite an accomplishment of being on the Dean’s List for 4 years. She graduated with a B. Com. (Hons) Degree, and quickly obtained her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). With her limitless work ethic and brilliant mind she was a master of numbers and she excelled in her career, always exceeding expectations.

While living in St. John’s, Danielle met the love of her life, Shayne McGrath. With both of their careers established, they purchased their dream home in Torbay; her pride was evident throughout. She loved to host family and friend gatherings and they enjoyed life to the fullest. From ziplining to an ice rink in the backyard to teach Wynter to skate, and what came to be the perfect wedding venue, this was the place to be!

Outside of her academic and professional success, Danielle loved adventure, traveling, and was a natural athlete. She enjoyed the outdoors, skiing, snowmobiling, golfing, mountain biking and providing her daughter with amazing adventures to remember.  She loved riding on the back of the Harley with Shayne with her favorite country playlist on bust.

Danielle had a love for dogs, she brought “Bernie”  into their home, a goofy gentle giant. He brightened everyone’s life during her fearless fight with cancer. She effortlessly trained both him and Shayne to be the perfect companions.

Left with the most amazing memories, her loving and devoted husband, Shayne McGrath, and the light of her life, her beautiful daughter Wynter (with that same beautiful smile and thirst for adventure). Her loving parents, Perry and Rosiland Collins (who embraced what truly is a mother’s love, evident in the unwavering care, commitment and love her mom and best friend showed throughout her journey). Also lovingly remembered by her two brothers, Shane Collins (Amanda) and Michael Collins (Vanessa); cherished nieces Emily and Madison; grandparents Robert and Marie Cook; in-laws Robbie McGrath and Marie McGrath; Grandparents in-law Brian and Grace Parrell, Patrick McGrath, Aunt Jill (Leonard); brother in-law Kyle (Jordan) and sister in-law Jessyka; Aunt Jeannine (Kevin), Uncle Neville (Marilyn) and Aunt Marina (Gerald); cousins Jamie, Jennifer, Jillian, Brittany, Natasha, Samantha, Robbie, Griffen and Jaxon. Also special friends who truly loved her dearly Heather Button, Maria Eagles, Stefan Jenkins, Tiffany McEntegart and Kenny O’Leary (Brooke) who is the most amazing dad to Wynter. She had a large circle of family and friends. Predeceased by grandparents Wallace and Wilhelmine Collins, Frances McGrath and Uncles Kenny and Robbie Cook.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all who provided care and support to Danielle: Dr. Melanie Seal, Dr. Heidi Brake, Dr. John Adams, the Palliative Care Program and the Community Health Care Nurses; and to the staff at the PCU at the Dr. L.A. Miller Center for their care during Danielle’s time there and their compassion shown to her and her family.

Family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Monday, June 5, 2023 from 2:00 – 9:00 pm. A celebration of Danielle’s life will take place at a later date.

Danielle, we will honour the legacy you created in your fight against Glioblastoma and all that you accomplished through your kindness and tireless efforts.  #Teammcgrath44  Donations in Danielle’s memory can be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. The annual walk is happening Sunday, June 25, 2023. To contribute to Danielle’s quest to fight Glioblastoma, please visit the following link.

There is a paasage to heaven that opens when its time for one of Gods precious children to come home. That time is never the right time for those left behind. We feel the emptiness of loss, the need to reunite, the pain of longing. May remembering all of Danielle love, her love for Wynter and her family ease the pain you feel in her loss. May remembering those sweet memories bring your heart comfort. May you find comfort in them and know heaven is home.

Sending sincere condolences to Shayne and all family and friends of Danielle. I met them both back in Hockey Days playing together with our son Chad. I followed her /their story when Chad informed us she had received her diagnosis .. I FB trolled their wedding.. not because I was nosy.. but because I felt a love for both of them and wanted to see/feel their happiness.. Since that time, I’ve prayed for her and hurt for her. She is a remarkable human who has taught many ..”.not to sweat the small stuff but to live their best life”…. She was taken away from her Cowboy way too soon… but she is now at peace… free from pain and flying high… She will look after her Cowboy and her very precious Wynter r from above. You sweet Girl will live on in many of our Hearts.. Rest in Peace.

We are so sorry to learn of Danielle’s passing. Although we only met her a few times, we were inspired by her courage and her zest for life. We share in your loss and hope it brings you some comfort to know that others are thinking of you.

Ros and Family. I’m so sorry for the loss of your Beautiful Daughter, Danielle. What an amazing loving strong family Danielle came from and has passed down to her precious daughter, Wynter. Prayers and hugs. Danielle will never be forgotten ……

Ros and family,
Heartbroken to hear of Danielle’s passing. I have followed her journey from afar online and through mom, hoping with all hope that some miracle cure would come to be. I have thought about you all so much over the past two years and will continue to in the difficult days to come. Sending you all the love and sympathy.

Danielle and I first met as teenagers working at Quiznos, and then again when we completed our B.Comm degree together. She was very smart, kind, and driven, and I know she fought so hard against this horrible disease. She is a true inspiration. My sincere condolences to the Collins and McGrath families, and to her daughter (who she spoke so fondly about when we would cross paths) ❤️

Our hearts go out to Rosland, Perry and their family.
Danielle left us to early and has gone to be with the
Lord.. Our deepest thoughts and Prayers are with you at this very sad time.

There are never any words that can bring comfort when you lose someone especially so young so My heart goes out to Danielle’s family in this hard time. She fought hard and as the obit says she lived every day to the fullest to the end and did all she could to make a difference for others fighting this same battle. I’ve known Danielle for years since our paths crossed in hockey, and then again completing our B Comm. Of course we played for the business hockey team with the guys! Don’t forget our fun trip to lewisporte for our lady peace – despite the rain we had a blast. That’s what I’m going to remember, fun times lots of laughs and friendship. You will be missed Danielle. Rest in peace my friend.

I’m not good with words, but I hope someone in Danielle’s life is able to read this. I grew up playing hockey with Danielle and she was always hard-working and one of the first people to crack a laugh when anything was going on. Watching her journey the past few years has been difficult, however has also given me a great appreciation for my life as I watched Danielle live her best life. She was fearlessly positive and happy doing the things she loved with the ones she loved. I will forever keep that in my memory as I navigate my own life. She’s left a mark on this world, no doubt. Sending her friends and family all my love during this time! Never forgotten.

So very sorry for your tremendous loss. I met Danielle last summer. Such a beautiful person.

Neighbor on South Pond Rd

To Wynter and all of her loving family,

My heart goes out to you all. Danielle fought an amazing, brave and truly inspirational fight. Life isn’t always fair but Danielle made the absolute best of each and everyday and passed that energy and determination on to those around her. Though our conversations were often short, I learned a lot about coparenting in those short conversations and it gave me hope.
Wynter is equally if not more fearless, funny, smart, kind and truly amazing as Danielle was. That light will always live inside Wynters heart, and I know she will truly thrive knowing just how strong her Mommy had always been.
All my love, hugs and thoughts to Danielles close family and friends.
– Chelsea

Rest in peace sweet girl ♡
