Passed peacefully in her 84th year on August 6, 2024. Daphne (Sheppard) Winsor is survived by her loving husband of 62 years William (Bill), daughter Jill O’Neill (Shane), son Ian (Diane), and predeceased by her son Barry (Karen). She was a proud Nana to Megan (Derek), Paige (Lannie), Haley (Noah) and Grant (Abigail), and loving sister to Vera, Ian and predeceased by David, Douglas and her parents, Lilith and John.
Her stories of Bill were always awakening. Bill cheated by skipping his turn to match her shoe at a Riverdale dance, laying the foundation for a remarkable romance, friendship and future together. They were such an enviable team, proud of their children and always bringing out the best in one another. Daphne and Bill travelled the world, prayed, golfed, played cards, worked out, drank coffee, tea and wine, walked great lengths and nurtured their family’s growth together.
Daphne was incredible. She had an uncanny ability to allow us all to feel that we were her most special when in her company. She emulated all that we strive to be, exuding kindness, fairness, decency, empathy, optimism and dignity. Daphne was a giver and a lighthouse to anyone who was fortunate to share her life. A student of countless recipe books and a “foodie” before her time, Daphne’s kitchen smelled of the wholesome flavours of soups, turkey and chicken, spread-a-burgers, lasagna, mac-and-cheese and baked goods.
She teased us by asking, “What’s the plan?” when we all knew she had it all figured out. Daphne loved to dance to all genres of music – last to leave the dance floor at her granddaughter’s wedding! She drove cool cars, loved a good chat, had 2 holes-in-one, was the fastest walker in the group, and volunteered endless hours for St. Thomas Church and other worthy causes.
Daphne’s life was a vibrant tapestry of love, service, passion, and joy, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her memory and spirit will be visited whenever we have a good meal, a heartfelt conversation, when we make that good shot on a bad day at the golf course, and when the sun rises and sets. Bless you, Daphne for modelling a life well lived.
The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the staff at Chancellor Park (3 East) and Tiffany Village, Drs Coleman and Hurley. At Daphne’s request, a private ceremony will take place August 8th with interment to follow at the Columbarium in the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to congestive heart failure research through the Newfoundland Chapter of the Heart & Stroke Foundation https://www.heartandstroke.ca/
