It is with great sadness the family announce the peaceful passing of David Whitten, age 79, at the Health Sciences Centre.  He was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Gwendolyn Whitten, mother and father-in-law Edna and Fred Roberts, and sister-in-law Joyce.  Left with a lifetime of loving memories his wife of 51 years, Melva; children Rick (Kim), Doug (Janet), Debbie (Todd), Paul (Michelle); grandchildren Harrison, Angela (Emily), Tyler (Amber), Nicole, Stephanie (Jeremy), Brandon (Jody), Maggie, and Sara; great-grandchildren Luke, Alexander, and Andrew; brothers Douglas (Florence), and Reg, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  After a 50+ year career in construction, Dave spent his time enjoying a game of growl and family time at the cabin.  He could always be counted on for sound advice, and he was so very proud to be a grandfather and great-grandfather to watch his family grow and prosper.  The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the staff at the Kidney Dialysis Unit, with special thanks to Dr. Barrett.  Also special thanks to Dr. Eric Smith and the Emergency Room staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their compassion.  Cremation has taken place.  Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Saturday, May 29 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow in Kenmount Road Anglican Cemetery.  The funeral service will be live streamed from the Carnell Chapel for those unable to attend in person.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada.  To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com.

We are so saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with Dave for 20 years of my career in construction. He was full of advice and knowledge and I could always trust Dave for providing me direction when things looked bleak. Although we lost touch for the past few years, he was always a topic of many conversations with me and l would always say to myself, “What would Dave do?” Deepest condolences and prayers to you Mel, and your family,. Dave will forever be remembered!

It was so sad to hear of Dave’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with Dave for many years with McNamara. He was an exceptional leader in his role as Superintendent and Project Manager. He had extensive experience in all aspects of Heavy Civil Construction, and I would argue second to none. Dave did not take no for an answer and he focused on getting the job done. We had good fun together, just tell him he could not get ‘it done’ and then look out for what came next. Hard worker, dedicated family man, exceptional human being, a man among men. Please accept our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences.
