It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David James Jones, who died peacefully on January 15th, 2025. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, uncle, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was known for his sense of humor, love of music (particularly brass bands), rugby, puzzles, and most recently growing tomatoes.

Survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Catherine and son-in-law Dan Ortiz; son Martin Jones and partner John Delaney; brother Terry Jones; sister-in-law Vanessa Lewis; brother-in-law Martin and sister-in-law Jeanette Lewis; numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

David was born in Nantyglo, Wales and married the love of his life, Barbara, in 1965. They welcomed a daughter and son and would later emigrate to St. John’s, Newfoundland in late 1974. It’s a place they’ve called home ever since.

David was a talented electrical engineer for over 40 years working on major hydroelectric and oil projects in Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada. He left an indelible mark on those he worked with over the years.

David was a presence in every room he was in and would strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved to talk but was one of the best listeners you would ever meet. He will be fondly missed, by everyone.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, January 19th at 2pm at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd, St. John’s, NL. Reception to follow.

Just heard about it today. Condolences to the family. I knew Dave well while at ShawMont. I was approved for 6 weeks vacation between Hind’s Lake and Cat Arm Projects in 1981, during which we built our house. The electrical work was done under Dave’s skilled guidance. The inspector, who approved the work, said at the time that it was the best wiring job for a house that he had ever seen. Best luck in Davy Jones Locker my friend R.I.P!

Barbara and family – I think of Dave very often, and always smile to myself as I remember all the laughs we had over the many years we worked together. I can hear his Welsh accent and robust laughter like it was yesterday. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I was fortunate to have worked with Dave many years ago when we both worked at AMEC. Interspersed between his stories and joke telling was anecdotes about his family. He spoke of you all with such love and of course, humor. Long after I left, he and I would correspond via email, touching base on the other’s lives. He was a kind and funny man, a true gem. My deepest condolences to his family.

Barbara, Martin and Catherine and your families.
Sincere sympathy on the passing of your dear Dave. I’ve got very fond memories of working with Dave; always pleasant, always smiling and always ready to share a joke or two. Cherish your great memories.

My condolences to Dave’s family on his passing. He was a great guy always full of humour with a positive disposition. I enjoyed working with him on a number of hydro projects in NL and remember well his hearty laugh. He will be surely missed by all who knew him.

Sending all my love to you all! Uncle David was such a lovely man! He was a warm, caring man with the best sense of humor!! He always made me laugh. It was always fun to be around him and listen to his stories. He was such a great story teller. He will be greatly missed. Listening to all the memories people shares at the service shows that I am not the only one who felt this way. He truly touched so many lives. Love to all!

Barbara, Catherine, Martin and family,
I was very saddened to receive this news. Words fall short in expressing my thoughts, I have fond memories of David as a kind and good neighbour to my parents. I remember the first time meeting you both while enjoying dad’s traditional Xmas ham. I think Barbara the last time was standing on the steps of Pius Tenth Church and being grateful you were there on that cold November day. I wish you all strength in these difficult moments. Please know you are in my thoughts.

To say Dave was a character was an understatement to say the least, he was principal cornet player with the Blaina Band (a brilliant player) from the crazy days in the 1950s on his Aerial Leader motorbike, until the family left for Canada. Far far to many stories to tell, his photographs still shine brightly on the Blaina Brass Band hall walls he is so fondly remembered by all the band. Our thoughts are with Barbara and the family at this sad time

To Barbara, Catherine and Martin,
I was saddened to hear of David’s passing. I met David when I taught Catherine and Martin at MacDonald Drive Elementary School. They were excellent students in their different ways. When Catherine appeared in my class I was captivated by her lovely smile and demeanour. Later I met their parents and could see how that was passed on to their children.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of a dear husband and father.

To the family I am sorry for your loss. May your love one, husband, father, Dad, father in law, friend, rest in peace. May you all rest in precious peace memories and recall the special moments joy happiness and triumph that love and family are all about. With love Addie Ortiz Barkely
