It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of David Langdon Gill at his home in Conception Bay South, aged 82. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, David was a gentle and fun-loving person who approached life with enthusiasm and joy. David enjoyed a long career as a teacher and then professor at Memorial University before becoming a real estate agent in “retirement.” An Officer in the UNTD in his youth, David was an avid golfer, fly fisherman and trumpeter in both the CLB Band and Gower Community Band. Dave was happiest being with friends and spending time with family – especially enjoying his role as “poppy.” Mourning his loss are his loving wife of 55 years, Cynthia (Haines), children Susan Bonnell (John) and Ken (Cindy), and beloved grandchildren Sarah (Nik) and David Bonnell and Julia and Holly Gill (mother Eve MacDonald), along with brothers-in law Lorne Haines (Louise), David Haines (Pat) and sister-in-law Joyce Hudachek, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents Brigadiers Kenneth and Lily Gill (Gosse). David has been cremated and a funeral will be held on December 9, 2020 at 11:00AM from St. John the Evangelist Church, Topsail – by family invitation only. The funeral service will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend. The family is planning a celebration of life in the summer for all Dave’s many friends and acquaintances. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Chamberlains Park Action Committee, Inc. Measure a man by his friends.

With sincere condolences to Cynthia and family.
Dave and I were colleagues when he taught Mathematics at MUN. Whenever I met Dave a friendly and lively conversation ensued, and I was always left with good feelings afterwards. Sometimes, on a rainy day in St John’s, I would go into the coffee room and “sunshine in CBS today” would be written on the board. I never saw him write it there, but I somehow knew that he did it.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Gills passing , our deepest condolences to the family. He was a great man .

Mrs. Gill and family,
I was privileged to have Mr. Gill as a math teacher at Booth in the 60’s. Our paths also crossed at MUN. He was a great teacher and a wonderful person. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Deepest sympathy.

We were deeply saddened to learn of David’s passing. Our contacts with Dave throughout the years have always been pleasurable. A gentle man indeed whose sense of humour was enjoyed by all. As part of the teaching staff at University he always showed dedication and a willingness to help new staff members. In recent years we met him often at the walking track and he always had a story to tell.
Our thoughts, prayers and love go out to you all.

Dear Cynthia, Susan, Kenneth and family,,
The news of Dave’s passing was such a shock and brought us so much sadness. When we think of Dave, we think of a brilliant man with such a successful career but mostly we think of his success and achievements in the more important things in life.. We think of dedication to family, friends and community, also his genuine interest in the wellbeing of all around him.
Although it is difficult to bring a smile to our faces at this time, there is a sense of joy when we think of the enjoyment and laughter that he brought whenever he was in our company.
We want to express our sincere sympathy to you and your family..

Dear Cynthia and family;
We were truly so sorry to learn that Dave had passed away. He played a huge role in ” our story “.. When Dave was a teacher at Booth Memorial Highschool, he was instrumental in having Bill transferred from Bishops College…….so it was basically because of him, that Bill and I met., and are together for 55 years…..and for that we will be eternally grateful . We remember him in our youth as a congenial, and wonderful teacher… and it was a pleasure to be in his company.. When we met both of you over the years, it was obvious that you had a very special and loving relationship.
We know you will miss him terribly, but he will never really leave you ” Just Whisper His Name In Your Hearts……He Will Always Be There”.

Our deepest sympathy to you and your family……remember all the wonderful memories you made together.

It was with great sadness that I received the news of Dave’s passing. I have so many wonderful memories of working with him; his lovely stories, his warmth, his insight into human nature, and his always positive demeanour to name but a few. In the ten years we worked together never a day went by when he didn’t make me smile. He was a great teacher and his students were very fortunate to have been in his classes. He will be missed by so many people.

Cynthia and Family:
We were so sorry to hear of Dave’s recent sudden passing. I first met Dave 52 years ago at Booth Memorial High School in St. John’s when as a newly minted graduating teacher, I was assigned to Dave as my cooperating teacher for a two week teaching mentorship. His expertise at imparting the finer points of logarithms and trigonometry to his high school classes made a lasting impression on me that served me well as I began my own teaching career. I always enjoyed our chats since those days that covered everything from mathematics teaching to politics to salmon fishing to hockey and then some. Of course every chat was always well sprinkled with his great sense of humour.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family.

My sincere condolences to the Gill family on the sudden passing of a real gentle man and a pleasure to work with in the Math Department so many years ago. May he rest in peace.
Kathleen (Kay ) Scott

Cynthia and Family, we were so sad when we heard of Dave’s passing. He was a great friend, a true gentleman, a former Rotarian who gave so much back to the community, a compelling storyteller and a trusted real estate advisor. If it wasn’t for Dave, we wouldn’t have our property in Holyrood today.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your husband, father, and grandfather. I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Gill as a prof at Memorial years ago.
I had met him prior to that when he visited with my Aunt Lillie and Uncle Tom in Terra Nova.
My mother also passed on Nov. 20th, so they are both keeping each other company (so to speak) on the obituaries page.
Treasure the memories, Vera Calloway

To Cynthia and the entire Gill family. As you know David was a member of our Rotary Club for many years and we enjoyed his fellowship and his dry sense of humor. Being a salmon fishermen myself he often spoke of fly fishing on his favorite southern shore rivers. During the time of his retirement career as a Real Estate Agent I had more than one occasion to avail of his talent by acquiring two business properties,. one of which is the Kenmount Road property where Terra Nova Motors is located today. His help in acquiring that property in particular was much appreciated. He was a gentle soul and a good man. My deepest condolences, Doug Russell

Cynthia, Susan, Ken, and Family. We are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our dear friend, Dave. He was such an important and treasured part of the life of our family for more than 45 years. We worked closely together during Dave’s years serving as a member and Chairman of the CBS School Board. His commitment to the community was remarkable. On a much more personal level, he was “Uncle Gill” to our children when we were all much younger. We will forever treasure our memories of Dave from our times together over the years, whether vacationing, camping, fishing with the boys, berry picking, playing bridge and poker, singing, and our many, many social gatherings over the decades.
