Obituary
Lori was born on Allen’s Island, NL, on September 10, 1953. She passed peacefully away on January 16, 2022, in St. John’s at the age of 68.
Lori’s love of children led her to a career in education. After completing two years of teacher training at Littledale College, St. John’s, she began her career teaching in a three-room school in Lamaline. Her final position was a provincial consultant with the Department of Education.
While working full time and parenting two children she earned four academic degrees: a B.A.(Ed) and a B.S.Ed. from Memorial University, a M.Ed. (Learning Disabilities) from St. Michael’s College in Vermont, and a M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) from the University of New Hampshire. During her career she taught regular and special classes as well as working as a school guidance counsellor. Lori was employed at the Burin Peninsula School District office for several years providing leadership to teachers and students in gifted education. During her tenure at the Department of Education she travelled throughout the province providing support in the area of autism for teachers and parents. She was always eager to be a mentor to young and aspiring educators.
Lori loved reading and writing herself and also teaching in this area. At the school level she was instrumental in introducing programs such as Reading Buddies and establishing a Reading Room. While at the Department of Education, she coauthored several policy manuals in the areas of special education and reading. The last children’s book she wrote was a personal one for her grandchild in which she was poking fun of Frank being chased by a moose.
In addition to her career as an educator she was a news broadcaster at CJOX in Grand Bank and also worked as an immigration officer for a period of time.
Her love for children she influenced as an educator was eclipsed only by the love she had for family, Frank, her husband for 48 years, and her children Rhonda and Joanne.
She was the most amazing nana to her grandchildren and they were the benefactors of her unconditional love.
Lori loved music, dancing, live performances, travelling, chocolate, cheesecake and her dogs. She loved so many things and always lived life to the fullest. She had a keen sense of humour and had a quick wit. She liked to play practical jokes on family and acquaintances alike, especially her sons-in-law, David and Marc.
She was a very kind and generous person. She was always there to help someone that she thought needed a hand up. She never passed a needy person on the street that she didn’t help. After giving them a donation or coffee she would shake their hand. She would always say that everyone needs a human touch.
In keeping with her love of reading her family is establishing a ‘Lori Crews Memorial Award in Reading’ at John Burke High School in her hometown of Grand Bank, NL. Donations to this award will be graciously accepted. You may also wish to remember Lori by an act of kindness to someone who needs your love.
Her family was very proud of all her accomplishments; but they will miss her daily as a wonderful mom, nana, and wife.
Lori was predeceased by her parents Jack and Bridget Haley, sister-in-law, Emily Haley, parents-in-law, Thomas and Nellie Crews, and brothers-in-law Gilbert Cake and George Crews (Stella).
Lori is survived by her husband, Frank, two daughters, Rhonda (David) and Joanne (Marc); four grandchildren, Drew, Ella, Adam, and Marcy; brothers Bill, John (Julie), Clem (Kathleen), and Pat (Doreen); sisters Alice, Margaret, and Minnie; brother-in-law Henry (Gertie); and special sister-in-law, Lily Crews; many nephews and nieces, along with many other relatives and friends.
Her family wishes to thank the staff at 2NE, Pleasantview Towers, for their kindness and support they have provided while she was a resident there. A special thank you to the palliative care team–we will be forever grateful.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
I am just so sad to hear of the passing of such a wonderful Woman. I have so many fond memories of Mrs Crews, please accept my most sincere condolences. Prayers to Joanne and all of the Family.

Lori was a friend, confidant, co mischief maker, and together we shared many family gatherings and girls get togethers.
We were saddened to hear the news of her passing . She will always have a special place in my heart and in my memories.

It was so sad to hear of Lori’s passing. I have many fond memories of the years working with her at Partanna Academy in Grand Bank and knowing her as a friend. To Lori’s family: I am so sorry to hear about Lori; can’t get her off my mind. I realize you don’t know me; but my mom is also at PVT – Eileen Baldwin and Lori would come in mom’s room, sit on the bed and “talk” away to us; i would give her a treat and she would certainly enjoy it. So very sorry to hear of the passing of such a kind and warm lady. She brought food to the hospital when my dad was sick. I met Lori many years ago while she was working at Partanna and she was such a wonderful lady who was always there to lend a helping hand, offering advice or pulling some kind of

I was shocked and saddened to hear this news. I first worked with Lori and Frank at Partanna Academy in the mid 1980s and then years later with Lori at the Department of Education. We shared many laughs and she was always supportive. Sadly, we lost touch in recent years. My thoughts are with Frank and all her family whom she always spoke of with great pride. The world was a better place with her in it and she will be fondly remembered..
