It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and poppy, Dennis Mackey who passed on December 20th, 2024, just days after celebrating his 60th birthday.

Predeceased by his mother Bridget Mackey, parents in-law Frances and Douglas Harding, sister Sandra Mackey, and brother in-law David Lieb.

Leaving to mourn his best friend and wife of 36 wonderful years Michelle Mackey; children: Melissa (Matthew), Justin (Samantha), Ryan (Abigail), Nathan (Cole); grandchildren: Isaac, Ezrah and Zaria; father: Frank Mackey; siblings: Frank (Ita), Al (Karen), Jerome (Elizabeth), Linda (Jim) and Paul; siblings in-law: Paula (John), Paul (Paula), Glenn (Lisa), Lisa (Des); special friends: Derm and Norah Harding; and his little fluffy friend, Holly. His treasured spirit is also mourned by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Born in Gander on December 16th, 1964, Dennis was raised in St. Brendan’s, Freshwater, and St. John’s. As an adult, he raised his own family in Conception Bay South – a place the family constantly returned to any time they veered away in a move.

Dennis, also known as his proudest title – poppy, was the epitome of kindness, love, support, care, and a family man. Dennis loved his family above all, but also had a passion for Mustangs, telling stories, and connecting with people. Dennis never met a person who didn’t leave feeling like they were his best friend and the most special human on the planet. He was a man of unwavering kindness, devoted to serving others, and forging connections that made everyone feel seen and valued. A friend to all, he carried a smile that could brighten any room and a joke that could ease any burden. His warmth and compassion were gifts he gave freely, leaving a lasting imprint on every life he touched. His legacy of kindness, connection, and unwavering generosity is one we, his family, will strive to carry forward, honouring his memory by living with the same open heart and gentle spirit he shared with the world.

He always put others first and no matter what – he had a can of Diet Pepsi, a smile, or a terrible joke he found on the internet to make sure the people he loved had a smile on their face. His favorite thing to do in the entire world was to go for a summer ride (especially around the bay) in his yellow 50th anniversary edition Mustang or his blue 60th Mustang convertible with his loving wife.

His family would like to thank the first responders for their quick assistance and for the help they provided us and others.

The family is accepting visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Friday December 27th between 2pm-8pm. A celebration of life will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Saturday, December 28th at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Wheels for Wishes NL at donate@wheelsforwishesnl.com or another charity of their choice.
