Derrick George Murray, lovingly known as Ding Ding to his pride and joy Isabella, and loved unconditionally by his family and friends, suddenly passed away on August 8, 2024 at the age of 66.
Derrick was known for his deep faith, love of life, travel, artistic flare and extraordinary ability to bring joy to everyone he met. His passion for Christ was the guiding force in his life and everything flowed from his unwavering devotion. He didn’t shy away from witnessing the Love of God to anyone he encountered as he would always quote “Jesus stay with me, and I am staying with you”.
He is survived by his loving family brothers John, Allan (Cheryl), Lloyd, Gordon (Marcia), and Gregory (Merina); sisters Phyllis, Eileen (Winston), Pamela (Stewart), and Andrea; extra-special nieces Isabella (his life), and Lois (his travelling buddy); nieces, nephews and countless friends who were like family to him.
He is now reunited in Heaven, resting in the arms of Jesus with his parents Allan and Sophie, brother Peter, and brother-in-law Albert.
Derrick’s vibrant spirit will be celebrated at his visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday, August 14 from 4-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Bethesda Pentecostal Church, 1 Escasoni Place, St. John’s on Thursday, August 15 at 11 a.m. Derrick will be laid to rest with his brother Peter in the Bethel Pentecostal Cemetery, Victoria. The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

I am saddened to hear of Derrick’s passing. I have so many fond memories of his home visits to style hair. A force to be reckoned with for sure! He made sure that he came to the funeral home when my mom passed in 2018.

It was a shock to receive the message from my sister, Joy, about Derrick’s sudden passing! The first memory that flashed in my mind was the ability Derrick had to make you laugh no matter what the circumstance. I remember when my parents; (his Aunt Annie and Uncle Claude) were in the senior’s home. Derrick dropped by one afternoon while I was visiting. He started singing to Mom as soon as he entered the room ;“ you are my sunshine “ and telling her how beautiful she was. Mom’s face immediately lit up and the biggest smile came on her face. I’m sure he’s already found her in heaven and is singing her favourite hymn to her..He had a way of making everyone feel special and inclusive. No back doors or pretence!
Derrick and I were in the same age bracket as cousins and their family was one of the closest cousin families we got to visit with whiile growing up. My Mom and his Dad were a very close brother and sister. Derrick lost his Dad at a very young age and I always admired his love and dedication to his Mom.
I also admired Derrick’s love to travel and see the world! I heard he had a special knack to get Into a celebrity event without an invite. His charisma had a way of taking over and causing those around him to forget the red tape and accept him in an inclusive manner.
His love of God was always evident whether in just a word or sentence or song or poem.. He was an amazing writer and poet.
Earth has lost an amazing, unique, loving, caring individual but heaven has gained a precious jewel to add to God’s kingdom . He’ll be greatly missed by family and friends here on earth but we’ll soon meet him again in heaven.

My family and I would like to express our deepest sadness at hearing of Derrick’s passing. He was a fixture at our house for over 20 years and his visits were always a time for laughter and chatter. I would cook him supper (or lunch) and it was never a quick visit….. and of course there had to be something sweet to finish things off. We were so sorry to have missed the wake and funeral but he will be in our hearts forever. I’m sure he’s with Todd having a wonderful cup of tetley tea getting caught up with all the latest news.

Derrick would come to our house regularly when we lived in Newfoundland. He gave both my children, their first haircuts and many more.
Every visit was so much more than a haircut. It was an experience. You never know what would happen when Derrick came.
I expect many of us look back and realize how much Derrick added to each of our lives.
I am pleased that we got to catch up last September at Keith King’s house.
I watched the funeral on line. The pictures should be in a fashion magazine. The service was so appropriate and well done.

Our hearts are broken to hear the news of Derrick’s passing. Derrick with his larger than life personality, was an absolute joy to be around. We have wonderful memories of Derrick coming to our homes to not only help us look good on the outside with his stylist abilities, but also to feel good on the inside with his wit, charm, and down to earth qualities.. Oh my how we would laugh til we cried.
Unfortunately over the past few years we couldn’t grab that coffee together as we often spoke of due to the pandemic and mom’s Parkinson’s disease.
To attend the funeral today virtually was a blessing.

Like so many, Mike and I were deeply saddened to hear the news of our long time friend’s passing.
Reading all the heart warming messages, I can only reinterate what has been said by so many others. Derrick was larger than life and a ray of sunshine. Always in a hurry but always took the time to chat. Whether he was visiting, doing hair or just a chance meeting, his love, energy and enthusiasm was always so evident and contagious. Sharing his faith and love for God either in word or song, he bought so much love and joy to all who were blessed to have known him, making our world a better place.

To the Murray Family
To say that Derrick will be missed, and will be missed greatly, is truly an understatement. He had a unique capacity to engage everyone he ever met and this legacy will live on. In his company, you would always find humour , compassion and guidance . He seemed to know what needed to be said in a myriad of circumstances and was always willing to share a good laugh, with whomever was in his circle .
A couple of years ago, we had the pleasure of having Derrick drop into our house, while travelling across the island. A wonderful visit was had, with lots of laughs, reminiscing, conversation and words of wisdom and a cuppa, of course! He was telling us about a book he wanted to write, based on his trip to parts of NL a few summers ago helping random strangers paint their sheds and repair their lobster pots. He said it would be titled something like “Would a man dressed like this, do this ?” That’s who he was !
Surely, a bright light has gone out and your world is a little darker . For the family , remember “behind the clouds, the sun is still shining”. I think Derrick would want all of us to remember that and live like he did .

We shared of our love of travel and cultural experiences but above all, a love of Christ and His people.

Please know that your deep loss is shared by hundreds of people you know, and thousands more besides. As you so perfectly stated in his obituary, Derrick’s countless friends were like family to him.
Derrick’s many visits to our home always contained much discussion and laughter, plenty of food for thought, and they always seemed too short. Every time, he went out leaving us better than we were when he came in.
I will miss him like a brother, and I know my parents (Bob & Media) both loved him like a son. Snapshots of Derrick relaxing at our cabin and reading to our boys are among our very favourites. Mary and I will dearly miss his one-of-a-kind personality, now that he’s been ‘promoted to Glory’ – but we will meet again!

Through the years My children Loved to see Derrick stop by for a cuppa on his way to St Johns. He was a very uplifting spiritual people’s person who left everyone with a smile with his since of humor. He just had this positive attitude that made everyone feel Special. What can anyone say about Derek Murray other than it was a pleasure to have known such a genuine, loving, caring and free spirited person.
I’ve known Derek and his family for pretty much all my life and they are one of the most recognized families in our community.
Their mom Sophie was a woman of great faith and a sweetheart of a person who like Derek, always a warm welcoming smile. I guess that’s where he got those same traits.
There will no doubt be a major void in a lot of people’s lives, especially his family, due to his sudden death but I think he would say , “I am where my Savior led me.”
On behalf of the citizens, staff and council members of Victoria, I want to express our sincere condolences to you all at this difficult time. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We were saddened to hear of Derrick’s passing. We got to know Derrick during our college years at EPBC in Peterborough, Ontario. He was a witty person who could make you laugh at pretty much anything. His love for the Lord, family and friends was evident to many people. He will be missed dearly and remembered fondly. Take comfort in knowing that he is with the Lord whom he loved dearly. Keep the beautiful memories close until you are reunited with him again. This news is so sad… Derek was a part of so many milestones… weddings, grads and so much more . Once you met him you had a friend for life … I remember when my dad passed,, we were at the funeral home and I heard Derek’s voice before he even entered the room .. it immediately brought a smile to my face … he was that kind of person … he will be missed and loved forever. Sincere condolences and prayers to his family and friends .
I am deeply saddened to hear about Derrick’s passing. I will cherish the memories I have of him and I am grateful to have known him. Derrick and I spent time together when we were both very young adults just starting out in life. He would come to visit me at my apartment in St. John’s and oh what fun we would have!! His personality and quick wit was something to behold. We shared so many laughs and funny moments.
My thoughts are with Derrick’s brothers and sisters. Derrick was a remarkable person and may memories of him bring you solace during this time.
And Derrick, my old friend, may you rest peacefully.

We are so shocked and sorry to hear of Derricks passing. He was always so full of life and love, with a one of a kind sprit. He was apart of my life as long as I can remember and there for every milestone of my life with his passionate love for his career. He always had a vision so you never needed to tell him what you wanted- because he knew (and he never disappointed) I always remember when he would come to my parents home or my grandparents as there would be a fresh pot of coffee on and a table full of sweets. He would say “come give uncle Derrick a hug” and proceed to sing a song he would make up about our family, or a new gospel that inspired him. Before he would leave he would also give a speech about love, faith, and family. Derrick, you will be missed by so many.
