I am so sad to hear this news, I hadn’t seen Derek fur many years, but have many memories of him. Spending time at Salmonier as a child meant many visits to Uncle Bob’s and Aunt Carmel’s cabin, and we always played with Derek. The swing was great, he loved that, it is actually how i picture him in my mind- sitting on his swing and always laughing! Abd there was always a tickle match, with a big hug afterwards.
May he rest in peace with Bob and Carmel.
Marilyn & Wayne:

The world has lost an extraordinary individual. We’re all unique but Derrick was definitely one of a kind.
He kept tight lipped about most of his thoughts but when he chose to share, they were never what was expected. His level of intelligence far surpassed what most assumed he was capable of. Not much slipped past him unnoticed.
Everyone in the neighbourhood knew Derrick. He kept a close eye on the comings and goings either from the driveway in his car, seated out front by the door or hanging out the upstairs window (summer and winter). Nothing escaped his gaze. He knew who came and who went. He loved to tell where they were going, what they were doing and when they’d be back, whether he knew them or not.
I have no doubt determination played a major role in overcoming the difficulties life sent his way but that same tenacity made it impossible to convince him not to water his garden while it was raining.
Anyone who crossed paths with Derrick became his friend. Decades may have passed but he never forgot who you were or what your name was.
Derrick took life as it came. He gave nothing but love and laughter asking for little in return aside from three square meals, a bag of chips and, of course, his diet Pepsi.
I may have been hired to care for Derrick but from day one, he wasn’t my client, he was my friend, my real life super hero.
His foolishness, his laughter, his sense of humour, his awe of the world, his bear hugs, his unconditional love will be forever missed.
You will never be forgotten, my sweet Derrick.
So sorry to hear. Rest in peace Derek. Condolences to all the Ledrew family.
