It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Don Powell, who left us on February 26, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on October 29, 1940, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. Don was a beloved husband, a dedicated professional, and a cherished member of his community.
Don was the devoted husband of Alison, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and companionship. Alison was by his side throughout their journey together.
Don spent his formative years in Stephenville, where he built lasting friendships and strong community ties. A chartered accountant by profession since September 1965, he was known for his integrity, sharp mind, and commitment to excellence in his field. He practiced public accounting in Stephenville from 1970 until he sold his interest in the firm in 1994, after which he continued providing consulting services to businesses and individuals in Western Newfoundland. He then joined the Public Utilities Board in Newfoundland, where he played a key role in overseeing regulatory matters and ensuring fairness in public services.
Beyond his professional career, Don was deeply involved in his community. He chaired the Rotary Music Festival, the New Enterprise Store Advisory Board, and the Kindale Library Building Committee, leaving a lasting impact through his dedication and service.
Outside of his professional career, Don had a passion for ballroom dancing, especially the tango. He found joy and grace on the dance floor, and those who knew him will remember the way he lit up while moving to the rhythm of the music.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary Powell; his siblings Margaret Powell, Fred Powell, and Edith Tibbitts.
He leaves behind his loving siblings: Elizabeth Gallagher, Barbra Hutchings, Alex Powell, and Joe Powell, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever cherish his memory.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support for those around him will be remembered always.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.
Rest in peace, Don. You will forever be in our hearts.
Allison & the Powell family, I am only just now learning of Don’s passing through my association with the Elks Club of St. John’s where I understand there will be a celebration of life on September 14. Unfortunately I will be away for that.
In 1971, Don was my first employer in Stephenville when I worked for him as an accounting clerk immediately following my business course. He treated me kindly and was a great mentor. Sincere condolences to all. Cindy (Gallant) Curran

The news of Don’s passing truly saddens me. It’s only been a few years since we first met… He was very helpful to me personally with some issues related to his expertise…. And also Tango dancing.. when it came to Tango dancing he was very encouraging and loved sharing his knowledge.
I know you will miss him terribly. I’m happy to have known him.

Sorry to hear of Don’s passing.. Years ago Don played a very active role in the political scene in Western Nl, He provided business advice and accounting service to many businesses in the region before moving to St. John’s.
