Obituary

Douglas Chubbs passed peacefully away at Pleasant View Towers on Friday May 20, 2022.He was in his 82nd year. Doug was the son of George and Clarice Chubbs of Carbonear. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother Eric.

Leaving to mourn are his wife of fifty-four years, Judy, nephews Peter and Adam Chubbs, his sister-in-law Marie, brother-in-law Peter Crocker (Cheryl).

He received his early education in Carbonear and moved to St. John’s in the late ’50’s. He pursued further education in the accounting field, achieving a CGA designation. He worked several years at MUN and then enrolled at Dalhousie University as a mature student graduating in 1980 with an MBA. Following achieving his MBA he worked at the Fisheries Institute as Comptroller. Later he moved from administration to education and spent the next several years teaching accounting and business courses, including several semesters teaching in Guyana and Kenya.

Doug enjoyed gardening in both Newfoundland and Florida and spent many hours building a thirty-two foot sailing sloop in his backyard, which he used on Conception Bay.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Pleasant View for their compassionate care and attention during Doug’s six-year illness.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home 329 Freshwater Rd. on Tuesday, May 24th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday May 25th at 11:00 a.m. Internment will follow at the Anglican Cemetery on Forest Rd.

No Flowers by request. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of ones’ choice.

So sorry to learn of Doug’s passing. I met Doug while I was studying at Dalhousie University and staying at Pine Hill. Doug was the steady voice of calm and encouragement. He was always there to give assistance on those tricky Accounting questions. Doug worked hard but always had time for some fun and laughs. Rest in Peace old friend.

Mr. Chubbs hired me in 1982 at the College of Fisheries to work in the Library initially. In later years I worked directly for/with Doug at the Marine Institute. He was a lovely boss. Always pleasant and I would like to reiterate Margo’s comment that “Doug was a true gentleman”. I am grateful to Doug for giving me my start at the College of Fisheries/Marine Institute which lasted 30 years! My sincerest condolences on his passing.

Doug was always a very pleasant and professional colleague to work with at the College of Fisheries/Marine Institute., interesting to talk to and always positive and outgoing. It was not possible to not enjoy time spent with Doug.. It is very sad to see him go, but my memories of him are all positive.. That is a strong indication of his influence.. I feel very fortunate that he was part of my life..
