Obituary
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Wayne Lilly, aged 82, on August 28, 2026 while surrounded by his family. Doug leaves behind a lifetime of precious memories with his wife of 60 years, Estella Lilly; his brother, David Lilly; his daughter, Valerie Lilly-Torraville (Steve Torraville); his son, Dougie Lilly; and his beloved grandchildren Nicole Torraville (Curtis Heffernan), Matthew Torraville, and Brooklyn and Brandon Lilly. Doug is also remembered by his favourite pup, Duke, and a large circle of friends.
Doug grew up in Portugal Cove-St. Phillip’s. He loved telling stories, and as the story goes, he stopped going to school in Grade 5 to start working and help provide for his struggling family. Work took him to Labrador, Montreal, Toronto and then ultimately back home. In Montreal, he worked on the construction of Expo 67. Also in Montreal, Valerie and Dougie were born. Following its completion, he and the family moved to Toronto and he worked with Reliable Transport. Toronto was home for the family for the next 16 years, however, he was always longing for Newfoundland.
Doug’s work ethic was second to none and led to his success. This resulted in 29 winters spent in Sunset Palms Retirement Community in Florida with Stella. His children and grandchildren frequently visited for Christmas and Easter break, or any other time they could make it work, as the door was always open. Doug loved to entertain and would regularly host all his friends for his infamous Carport Parties, where there was no shortage of food, booze, music, and laughter. From Florida, Doug and Stella would regularly take cruises with friends, or travel throughout the United States.
When he was home in Newfoundland, you could find Doug being his grandchildren’s biggest fans. He loved watching Nicole play soccer and Matthew play basketball. He loved Brooklyn’s visits, accompanied by bags of sweet treats. He was so proud of them and would tell anyone who would listen about their accomplishments.
Doug loved Johnny Cash, Foster and Allen, and Irish Newfoundland music. In his earlier years, Doug was a fantastic golfer, played hockey, and loved coaching hockey. He was extremely witty and even up until his final days, he had a one liner remark that sent everyone laughing. He had a massive sweet tooth and believed that there was always room for dessert, even when he refused to eat another bite of his dinner. In his later years, he never missed watching a Blue Jays game on television. But above all, he cherished time spent with his family and telling them stories from the past.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Doug’s family doctor, Dr. Matthew Ryan for his fantastic care.
Cremation has taken place. As per Doug’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral at this time. Private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the SPCA in Doug’s memory.
While we are heartbroken, we are thankful for the amazing memories and the years we enjoyed with Doug. We believe we should all live a little more like he did: love deeply, turn the music up a bit louder, and always say yes to a piece of cake.

I’m saddened to hear the news about Uncle Doug’s passing. I will always remember our yearly Christmas dinners with the Lillys – so much great food and an absolutely enormous turkey, which Doug had often raised himself. Those dinners are a testament to Doug’s hospitality and generosity. He was a lifelong friend of Dad’s, one of his closest friends. (My middle name was even taken after Doug’s name.) He was an unforgettable person and always kind and warm. Thank you for helping create so many great memories, Doug! My condolences to Aunt Estella, Valerie, Dougie, his beloved grandchildren, and all of his close friends, of which there are many.

We’re both sadden to hear of Doug passing away, all we can do is to offer our condolences to Estelle and family. We remember how Doug would always lighten room and make you feel comfortable. I’ll never forget the time that Cath decided she was going to drink Doug under the table, Doug laughed and laughed, well the next day guess who had the hangover.

So sorry to hear of the passing Mr. Lilly. When I first met him in high school with Dougie and our basketball buddies at your house watching NCAA or NBA, or just to party, you could tell he always had a genuine appreciation for people visiting. Our condolences to you all.

I worked with Doug at Bugdens Taxi for 10 years, he was someone that I respected. I stepped out of line one time ( maybe twice) and got myself suspended for 3 weeks, Doug put a petition together and pleaded my case to the owner, to no avail. lol
Thanks for standing up for me Doug, way back when.
