Dr. Bruce L. Mann, Ph.D., LL.M., M.A., B.A. (Honours), Grad. Dip. passed away suddenly on September 22, 2026, after a distinguished lifelong career in Academia.

Bruce was a passionate educator, researcher, writer, and respected scholar whose love of learning and intellectual curiosity were central to his life. He devoted his career to Memorial University, where he was a full professor in the Faculty of Education. Known for his analytical mind, thoughtful approach, and dedication to his work, Bruce was widely published and an author of four academic books. In his most recent work, he was researching the intersection of Neuroscience, Cueing, and Computers: Implications for Instructional Design. Bruce travelled extensively to share his research and ideas, presenting his work in Canada and internationally, including presentations in China, Greece, Italy, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He was deeply committed to teaching and mentoring generations of students. The relationships he formed with his colleagues and students were an important part of his academic life.

Behind Bruce’s many professional accomplishments was a man who loved deeply, lived with curiosity, and found joy in the people and passions that mattered most to him.  For 17 years, Bruce shared all this with the love of his life, Judy.  Together they shared a life filled with love, laughter, learning, and adventure.  A life that was uniquely theirs.  Judy feels deeply blessed to have shared those years with Bruce, to have loved him, and to have known the extraordinary gift of being loved by him.  Bruce also had a deep and special love for his two huskies, Mishka and Dusha. They brought him much joy and companionship. Mishka and Dusha were an important part of Bruce’s life.  He would enjoy taking them on walks along the east coast trail, car rides for pup cups, and quiet moments at home.

Sensei Bruce was also a lifelong martial artist, holding a third-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and a second-degree black belt in Judo.  Bruce began practicing Judo as a young child in Montreal and continued training and teaching Judo and Karate throughout his life in Newfoundland. In 2010, Bruce opened Zanshin Dojo, where he shared his knowledge and passion for the martial arts.  For Bruce, martial arts represented discipline, perseverance, lifelong learning, and the pursuit of excellence in character. He would often say to his students, “practice makes permanent.”

Bruce is predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Jeanne Mann. He leaves to mourn the love of his life, Judy; his cherished huskies, Mishka and Dusha; his brother, Roger (Janet); and his many relatives, friends, colleagues, and students, who will remember him with fondness and affection.

I trained with Bruce many years ago at the MUN Shotokan dojo when he was a green belt. One of the kindest people you would ever encounter. RIP Bruce.

I was one of his students at the faculty in the early 2000s. A lovely, soft spoken man who enjoyed his job.
Condolences to his family and friends.

My sincere condolence to you, Judy.

Judy, very sorry for your loss.I got to know Bruce over the past few years as I was the mechanic who fixed his equipment. Always enjoyed a conversation with him and found he had a very calm demeanor about him. Also was impressed how far he took his martial arts abilities. RIP Bruce.
