Dr. David Edward Lacey

September 23, 1960 to June 23, 2021

Obituary

We are forever grateful for the life of Dr. David Lacey who passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 60, after facing cancer with courage and dignity.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Janine Evans, children Devin (Rebecca Noah), Maria (Patrick Parfrey), Kieran (Anna Collis) and Amelia. Also left with precious memories are his parents Henry and Elsie Lacey, siblings Linda (Pat, deceased), Elizabeth (David, deceased), Stephen (Yvonne), Debbie, Christine (Terry), Glenn (Glenda) and Douglas (Angela), mother-in-law Stella Evans (Murray, deceased), brother-in-law David Evans (Paula) and many cherished nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues.

David grew up in downtown St. John’s and loved to tell stories about his childhood on Duckworth Street. From a very young age, he set his heart on becoming a physician and through unparalleled work ethic, made that dream a reality. Graduating from MUN Medicine in 1988, David went on to pursue an esteemed and respected career as an Anesthesiologist, spending most of his professional tenure at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. He was deeply passionate about his job, patients and highly valued work family. He was well known for his infectious spirit and ability to light up a room.

David loved walking in the woods, spending time at his cabin, traveling the world, as well as enjoying a drink and a dance to his infamous playlist. Above all, family was David’s greatest love. He gave all he had for them and did so in the most humble and selfless of ways. “Enjoy life” and “do what makes you happy” was his favorite advice to instill upon his children.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home at 329 Freshwater Rd. on Sunday June 27th from 12 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. The funeral service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Team Broken Earth for the Dr. David Lacey Memorial Scholarship, which will provide annual funding for a MUN Medical student to join a support mission. The student will have demonstrated excellence in patient-centred and compassionate care. Donations may be made at www.brokenearth.ca.

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss.
I met Dr. Lacey as an anesthesia resident from 2013-2017. I had a rough time but Dr Lacey had a way of making me laugh and put me in better spirits after talking to him. A compassionate guy, with great sense of humor, and energy for living life. I will miss him dearly.

I did clinical skills sessions with Dave in med school. And there couldn’t be 2 more opposite characters in the class! He would chide me “Well, that’s another new tie…how many is that, now bye?” He, and his dark curls and moustache…he was a handsome young MD…and we got along famously. And, he was so kind & caring when presenting the patients & always a twinkle in his eye…I knew he was “the stuff good MD’s were made of”…….God bless you…..you are special, still.

Hi Janine,
I was really sorry to hear of your and your families loss.
My thoughts are with you all.
Regards,
Randy

So sorry to hear of David’s passing.

I had the pleasure to have met him in North Bay, ON when he visited my brother-in-law Ian Martyn (outdoors canoeing trip before they dropped by for a visit at our place on the lake). Cathy and I smiled smiled when we met.

An instant connection..

Sincerest condolences to the entire family – Janine, Devin, Maria, Kieran and Amelia for this sudden loss. There are really no great words for times like this but I do hope that you can find some solace in sharing memories of your family together. I wish I could have met David; if he is anything like Devin, there is a lot for everyone in the family to be proud of.

I was a student and then a newly graduated RT when I met Dr.Lacey, 20 years have since passed yet I easily remember him as a warm, encouraging, intelligent and kind man. I am so sorry for this young loss.

Janine and family
I am so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I had the pleasure of working side by side with Dave when I worked as the “pain nurse “ as I was referred to while filling in for two maternity leaves from 2010-2013 and again in later years when he was Clinical Chief . Working with Dave was always a treat as he was so caring to every patient he encountered and loved to have a laugh. He was always so good to me me when I worked there. We chatted a lot about our kids together and he was so proud to speak of his family. He will be dearly missed by many. Please keep your memories close of such a wonderful man. I feel very privileged that I got the opportunity to work with him.

Such a huge loss! My deepest and sincere condolences to Janine, Devin, Maria, Kieran and Amelia. Even though it’s been 18 years since Dave worked in Fredericton, his legacy lives on with many of us; from pushing him in his wheelchair after he broke his leg skiing to having him stand and give a pregnant nurse (me) his seat – he was so kind, thoughtful and genuine. He loved his family deeply and was so proud of you all. We will keep you in our thoughts!

I had the pleasure of working with Dave in Fredericton when he was the ICU director. He was a bright light in our unit. The patients and families were so blessed to have had Dave provide them with compassionate and knowledgeable care during their darkest times. Dave’s colleagues were blessed to have shared many laughs and will carry so many fond memories with with them.
We all knew that Dave adored his family above all else. May you all find some comfort in your memories of this dear man.

Dear Janine and kids,
I’ve been thinking of you since Dave’s illness and now with his passing. . Dave was a wonderful colleague and friend. I particularly admired his commitment to and love for his family. He worked hard yet you were his number one. We will all miss him. Take care.

Dearest Janine, Devin, Maria, Kieran and Amelia,

Our family was so sad to hear of Dave’s passing. He was a wonderful person, father, and doctor. Our lives were changed forever when the Lacey’s moved in across the street in Fredericton and our families formed strong bonds. We have many memories of wonderful times while we were neighbours that we will cherish forever.
We are thinking of all of you and sending love from New Brunswick.
Ian, Susan, Alex, Mark and John Simpson

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Lacey’s passing. He was a wonderful person, excellent anesthesiologist and fantastic teacher. I’m sure his infectious smile and larger than life persona will be sorely missed in the OR.
My sincere condolences to the Lacey family.

Dear Janine and Family
It’s hard to find words to fill the void that Dave left in all our lives, especially yours. I first met Dave during undergrad at MUN in 1983, where he brought fun, curiosity, and humor to the physiology class. We were both thrilled to find out we were accepted to med school in 1984. Great memories of mixers, cramming for exams, and our fabulous Europe trip with you, Art, and Ursula. He lived life to the fullest, left this earth way too soon but his incredible legacy lives on through the beautiful family you both created. Sending you heartfelt condolences and love across the miles. God Bless. May he rest in peace.

So so sorry to hear of Dave,s passing, as a long time friend of the family , I guess I can relate to some of his stories about growing up on Duckworth St, wish I was in his company when they were told ,I could of added a few hey Steve, hold on to all those memories for thats what makes us who we are today, my sincere condolences go out to the Lacey family

Dear Janine and Family –

David lived an inspirational life of love, curiosity and joy. He projected genuine warmth, courage and humor. His love of life was contagious, and made us all a bit more brave. And although he is no longer with us in person, he has made an indelible, positive impression on our own lives, and he will continue to do so until the end of our days.

You and David created a wonderful family that amplified and extended David’s spirit. Your grief during his illness and passing must sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet I hope the knowledge that his spirit lives on with you and through you will both ease your suffering and provide solace and gratitude that you were partners with such a wonderful human being.

Dearest Janine,
Monty and I are thinking about you and the family during this heartbreaking time. . I will reach out in due course personally. I am completely in shock and can’t imagine what you are all going through. All our love. This is just tragic!! Time will heal some of this but nothing will replace Dave. Oh, I love you so much ! I wish I could wrap you and your beautiful family up and keep you all under imaginary wings as you go through this horrible thing. Dave was a gift to this world. It seems it is always the young and the good that leaves abruptly. Love Jill

Janine, Devon, Maria, Cierian, and Amelia

We just wanted to convey our deepest sympathies on the passing of Dave. We have very fond memories of him enjoying the rugby games, having a drink and his big smile. He always loved the game and all the joy it bring to the fans watching. We are thinking of you at this difficult time.

Janine, I’m so sorry for your loss on Dave’s passing, I remember when we all came back from Dal, having a great bit of fun and laughs at Happy Hour at Pepper’s when they’d have a live band squeezed in there sometimes. Take care.

To Janine, Devin, Maria, Kieran and Amelia,
Dave and I have known each other for many years.
We usually would connect while crossing paths in the hospital corridors going to consults or procedures where we would take time to have short chats!
Over the years as we updated each other on the goings on, there were several responses of wow, fantastic, yes b’ye!
I always left our talks smiling or laughing!
Condolences from our family,
Eric Pike, Jennifer Stender, Nick, Katie and Ben

Dear Janine and family,

I had the privilege of knowing Dave for many years. We were residents together and he always had a big smile, a head of curls, and a calm and reassuring way.
Later, we worked together in leadership roles and again, I was always impressed with his dedication and kindness.
He loved his family very much and his face would light up when he talked about the kids.
He will be dearly missed by us all.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Janine and family,
Dave and I were anesthesia residents together. We worked hard and had a lot of fun thanks to Dave’s love of life, jokes and down to earth way. He was a natural doctor and a friend to many. I have many happy memories of those days. Dave Lacey lived life to the fullest that’s for sure.
Wishing you peace and comfort. I will be riding the PCM this year in his honour raising money for cancer treatment and research.
Fondly, Susan Goobie, Boston
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal;
Love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

I met David as a resident in Anesthesia when he did his rotation in ICU. Once you met David, you were instantly friends. That’s the way he was. Friendly, down to earth and approachable.
He will be very much missed. We will be talking about him for years to come because folks like David are rare and wonderful.

Janine and Family
Shocked and so saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. I haven’t seen him since our last reunion but he was as I will always remember him… an arm around someone and a huge smile on his face.. He always enjoyed himself and I have fond memories of him from Medical School. My sincerest condolences.

Oh my, this is such sad news. Dave was still in med school when I met him and I worked with him at St. Clares and in Clarenville. I remember his bright smile and genuine nature and also his beautiful shock of dark curly hair. He was a skilled and accomplished physician and a lovely family man. My very deep condolences to his family.

Janine and family,

So deeply saddened to learn this news on the weekend. May all your fond and loving memories help you all during this difficult time and the days to come.

Sending my deepest sympathies and prayers to you all.

Janine and family,

My deepest condolences on your heartbreaking loss. May your many memories comfort you now.

To the family of Dr Lacey,
Our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr Lacey. We had the privilege of working with him on a daily basis in the Recovery Room. His infectious personality lit up the room on many occasions with his genuine sense of humour, and holistic care of his patients. Many days he could carry on with us, sharing a joke or story, and as he would entrust us with the care of his patients he would always respond “God love ya”. Dr Lacey was a skilled, dedicated physician. As we grieve with you in the loss of your husband, father, son, brother, and friend may you be comforted that he is now in the care of the Great Physician. Be assured that Dr Lacey’s legacy will remain with us always.

I am sorry to read of Dave’s passing. He was such a nice guy with an amazing work ethic. We met in university and crossed paths again when I was expecting my first child. I was so happy and relieved to see him. He looked after my prenatal care until circumstances sent me to an obstetrician. Dave continued to check in with me. A beautiful kindness extended by a very busy man.

RIP Dave.

My deepest condolences on this loss for your family. I worked with Dave in Corner Brook my first year in practice as a general
Surgeon. He was so kind and supportive to me. A great loss.

Dave was one of the most wonderful persons you could meet. Kind and compassionate. The greatest smile in the world. It was a pleasure and honour to know him.

Thinking of all of you during this difficult time. What a terrible loss of an amazing husband, son, and father. My condolences to you all.

Our heartfelt condolences to the entire Lacey family. We are saddened by the news of Dave’s passing. He made anyone who was lucky enough to have known him a better person. He was loved by so many people. He will be missed. Rest easy my friend, rest easy.

So sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I have good memories of becoming his friend at Brother Rice even though he was from St Pat’s and I was from St. Bon’s!
He was a good guy with a nice sense of humour.
Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I became friends with Dave in my late teens. We hung around together at the age when having fun was our primary goal but you could easily tell that Dave was going to be someone to make something of his life. His good natured persona was infectious and always brought enjoyment to whatever activity we were partaking in. I lost touch with Dave and those times when I moved away but they will always resonate with me. If you measure a mans success by the friends he has around him, then having counted Dave as my friend made me a very rich man. All my best to the Lacey family.

Janine , I was so saddened to hear of David’s passing. Sending you and the kids my deepest sympathy.

My condolences to the Lacey family for your loss of David. I remember David when I was working as a bank teller in the early ‘80s, he would tell me the story of being interviewed for med school. After several attempts for acceptance he told me when asked “If you do not get accepted, what will you do?” He laughed and said, “I will apply to the NL Constabulary!” I guess that did it! I was very saddened to read about his passing. I know he will be missed as I only knew him in passing many years ago and our conversation is as clear as yesterday.

Dr Lacey was a kind and caring person. We will muss him in the workplace. Condolences to the family. He is spreading his cheer now in heaven.

Carmel and Dave Pittman

I had the pleasure of working with Dave for the last 9 years in the OR at St. Clare’s. He was so kind to his patients and put them at ease as they faced their surgery. He treated them as if they were family. Dave while the utmost professional at work always liked to have a laugh and loved a good joke. His laugh was infectious! He spoke often of his family and you could hear the love and pride he had for them. Rest easy Dave. We will share stories to keep your memory alive.

To The Lacey Family,

I’m so sorry for your loss. I worked with Dave for 10 years when he was the attending anesthetist in ECT. We knew we would have a great shift when he was scheduled.
He was always so kind to our patients and had the ability to put them at ease. He had a hearty laugh that I will never forget. He spoke so often and fondly of his wife and children that I felt like I knew them. I would always get an update on someone when he was with us again. We would compare our recent travels and he always had suggestions of where to go our stay in a certain place. He was a wonderful person and will be deeply missed. My heart goes out to everyone who loved him.

Here’s my tribute to Dave

Ode To Dave

Dr. David Edward Lacey, where does one begin,
To describe a man who was full of life within?
A multifaceted person, you were without a doubt,
And often your many praises did everyone shout.

As a physician you were a treasure,
And to work with you a pleasure.
Always calm and helpful, your knowledge to impart,
For Dave you were ever eager just to do your part.

At Janeway Emergency, in your Casualty Officer role,
You always showed compassion, a truly gentle soul.
Your love of children was obvious, as seen in your interactions,
Diagnosing their ills and treating them, definitely was your passion.

Then on to the world of anesthesia, a new role you did pursue,
Your skills in the ER were missed by more than a few.
Putting your patients at ease when surgery they would face,
Your pleasant skillful manner helped their pulses not to race.

Although you had a serious side, when it came to being a physician,
You certainly had a fun loving side, a fact we can’t fail to mention.
A good party, or a good joke, always ready to take in and share,
Our Dave was a force for sure beyond compare.

Your family was most important, of that there was no doubt,
Of each and every one of them you were extremely proud.
The love of your life, Janine,a saint, you spoke so lovingly of,
Devin, Maria, Kieran, and Amelia you considered a treasure trove.

To say you will be missed is an understatement to be sure,
And it’s certainly true that you were taken far too soon.
Rest easy now my friend, your days are now pain-free,
You’ll always be remembered fondly, and not by only me.

Steve, Yvonne and all of the Lacey family. We are so sorry to hear of your brothers passing. We didn’t know him but there are so many wonderful comments about him that he must have been a great guy. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time.

So Sorry for your loss ! Dave was a great Emergency Room Doctor , with a larger than life personality ! He treated everyone with patience and respect! I worked with Dave in his early years , when he worked as an ER Doc at GB Cross Emergency in Clarenville NL! He always had us ( ER Nurses), entertained when he would phone to his house in ST Johns , and leave a message on his answering machine ., for his dog to hear his voice ! I think that Dave and his wife had gotten a puppy and he was afraid the puppy would forget his voice, so he would phone home frequently and let it go to voice mail! He was a great bit of fun but yet so professional to work with !

I did not know Dr Lacey! but I did know his brother Steve through a work connection the past few years. a very sincere thought of Condolences, Steve to you and David’s family with this huge loss . Take care friend

My sincere condolences to the Lacey family. I’ve worked with Dave over the past 7 years in the pain service (another one of the many work hats he wore). I feel so blessed to have worked alongside such a fantastic anesthetist, and more importantly, fantastic person. Dave was always full of energy, and his vibrant personality could easily fill a room. His easy-going, fun-loving personality made him a joy to work with. He was dedicated and kind to his patients. He spoke of his family often on his call days during the morning patient rounds and it was easy to feel the love and pride he had for you. May your memories help you navigate though this difficult time.

I don’t know where to start. Dave made me laugh everyday at work. He made patients feel at ease with his little one liners. He loved to tell patients that I was from Leading Tickles and that you had to watch me. He always joked and said that he always wanted to be a bayman.
He was so proud of his children and credited Janine with how wonderful they are.
He dearly loved his parents and talked so fondly of them.
I can’t imagine how is family is feeling. His work family are so heartbroken. I am sure he has left you with so many wonderful memories as he has done for us that you will think about for years to come.

Janine; we are so sorry to know you have lost your husband. this loving husband, father, friend and colleague.

We had the privilege of meeting you and Dave at the infamous “Murphy “ house on our holidays in Newfoundland two years ago. A great time was had by all . (My first all nighter in decade,s lol)
It was from that moment on, we all planned a trip to Europe under Brian’s guidance.
This trip unfortunately never happened.
I can only imagine all the fun and laughter we would of had.
Janine and family, hold onto the amazing memories and love you shared, and know Dave is with you always. See his smile through your eyes and his guidance and love in your heart.
Dave has left this world far too soon but he left it a better place ❤️

I am so sorry about his loss. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I will always have great memories of Dave. His passing leaves a void in the lives of so many who cherished his company. I feel blessed that we were friends for for 46 years.. Watched him become a man, a scientist, a banker, a doctor, a husband, father and friend to many.
Family was all important for him and the source of his greatest happiness. He enjoyed life fearlessly; was always up for anything, anywhere.
His kindness, laughter, smile (and dancing) are my most cherished memories. For Janine, Amelia, Kieran, Maria and Devin our thoughts and love will always be with you.

Dear Janine and Family,

Murray and I are so saddened to hear of Dave’s passing.
The Lacey family has always been so kind to us, so many happy times and wonderful dinner conversations in CB and St John’s; together we reflected/lamented the trials of navigating jobs while raising young families with all it’s complexities and frequent heartaches- you were both such a source of nourishment for us and our kids.
In the early nineties before mutual residencies began, Dave took me under his wing when working ERP nightshifts together at the Janeway- always encouraging, always a smile, always such solid clinical judgements. I don’t know how many times Dave guided me through challenging paediatric ER cases, often staying late after end of shift to ensure I was OK with handover, or just to help clear the waitroom. There was never any criticism, only gentle encouragement. Later during residency we reconnected; Dave was always willing to just lend an ear, share a beer or a game of squash.
Dave had the heartiest, most infectious laugh I’ve ever encountered, a reflection of the size of his heart.
Godspeed to you Dave, our lives are enriched from having known you and your wonderful family.

Love to Janine and family from Jim, Murray and the Scott Family

Aunt Elsie and the Lacey families. Please accept our deepest sympathy on the Passing of David. I was shocked to hear that his life was taken far too soon. My thoughts are with you at this time.
Ike and Eileen Ivey.

Dear Janine and family,

Our hearts are broken. We can only imagine your family’s and our prayers and thoughts will be with you.

From the first time we met David, as he helped take care of Chuck in China, we never saw David without a smile or a funny remark. We were elated to find that you were in Venice when we were and so enjoyed spending a leisurely lunch with you. We were always envious of your travels.

Staying in touch over the years and watching your family and your gifted children was a joy.

Our prayers and love to you all. What a wonderful man.

Warmly,

Judy and Chuck Jones

Dear Janine, Devin, Maria, Kieran, Amelia & family,.

Sincerest condolences, so so sad to hear this , please know your in our thoughts

I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Lacey, as a close friend of Devin’s I have good memories of Dave taking us to marble mountain in our youth. On the drive out he would play a CD of Maria’s singing which he was so proud of. He was always kind and generous and raised incredible children/ adults. My heart is with his entire family, his time was cut short which is so sad and unfair. Rest easy, you had a incredible career, family and leave behind a beautiful legacy.

Our deepest sympathies to Janine and your wonderful children. Gone much too young and so much to live for. However he is now is his eternity and will continue to see all the achievements of his family from a loftier perch. Keep strong while continuing to make your Dad proud of you all. My heart is saddened , from a distant cousin from Torbay. Theresa Fleming/Stokes

To the Lacey family,
I am so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I have known Dave since 2006 when I started my anesthesia residency. He was always a joy to work with. He was a great anesthesiologist, excellent clinician and always so kind to his patients as well as to us learners. He continued to mentor me when I took over as clinical chief and supported me throughout my career.

Dave’s personality filled the room with joy and laughter wherever he was. He was larger than life. He spoke of his wife and children often. He was filled with love and pride when he mentioned your names. His work family will miss him dearly. Our sincere condolences to Janine and the kids.

Janine and children,

Later to become fantastic life partner and awesome dad to some terrific kids. As much as he loved his profession , he loved you guys even more. I know that you will all carry him with you on your life’s journey and you will smile when you think of him. I’m not a big rum drinker but tonight I will raise one in his memory.

We send our love and sympathy to Janine and family..
May Dave’s memory be a blessing..

I had known Dave since 1986 in Med School and worked with him for many years. He was larger than life and uplifted everyone around him. He was an excellent anaesthiologist, but more importantly loved life and family. He was an inspiration to me to enjoy myself and I can’t imagine the void he has left for his family and friends. I will have a drink of rum for Dave.
