So sad to hear of Dr Paul’s sudden passing. Remember him well from my days as Patient Care Coordinator at the HSC ER Dept. sincere condolences to you Barbara and all his loved ones. Diana Kearley RN PCC.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Paul’s passing. Having studied Medicine at Memorial, and subsequently starting on staff, I have known Dr. Paul for many years. He always demonstrated a high bar for caring for his patients. I will miss passing him in the hallways.

I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Paul when he visited the ‘ Jewish Center of Kaunas ‘ in Lithuania. He sat down with us, the Jewish medical students, looked us in the eyes, and shared many stories and jokes about his journey as a doctor. You could tell right away what kind of doctor he was—an amazing and unique one. He sounded so dedicated and caring, and it was very important to him to share his way of thinking about medicine with us.

As a young doctor now, I can tell you that his story continues. I will remember his love and dedication to his patients and use it as a guiding value in my own journey. He was a strong and wise man who never made excuses.

Thank you, dear Dr. Paul. It was truly a pleasure to meet you.

The most incredible Dr our family ever met in the ’80’s.

Dr. Paul was my doctor for many years. He was very knowledgeable and thorough and because of his excellent care I am still doing well. My condolences to his family

I learned, this morning, of the passing of Dr. Michael Paul. As the former Executive Director of the Jewish Public Library in Montreal, I had the pleasure of getting to know Dr.. Paul, of regularly corresponding with him as well as to have met him, through our shared involvement with rare books. It was a topic. about which, as with so many things, he was a singularly informed and erudite. My partner, Lianne, and I, met him at a rare books event at the National Library and Archives of Canada. He could not have been more charming and engaging – we hold it as a very dear memory. Through his passion for rare books, and more, Dr. Paul enriched the JPL and our community. He was quite unique and his loss is profound.
We offer our sincerest condolences to Dr. Paul’s family. We wish you the solace of memory and the comfort of friends.

Rest in peace Dr Paul,, my mom sends her condolence too, we’re sorry for being upset about not being able to get on the transplant list and I accept it as it is, I’m happy when you gave me a second chance of being alive, again we apologize for our behaviour, may you rise above the heavens

He said as he was enrolling my 73-year old wife into the dialysis program, “I’ve got to ask you this: Are you pregnant?”
She said to me,”I couldn’t hear him. What did he say?”
I replied, “He wants to know if your name is Sarah.”
He swivelled around in his chair and with a grin on his face, quickly said, “ Well, you certainly aren’t Abraham!”
Years later when she was really ill and he came to her medical rescue he called me and said, “She is well. Read Psalm 100!”
With great gratitude I did as he said!
He was a great doctor and a great man! My condolences to Barbara and family and to all who are mourning his passing. May his soul rest in peace.
Sincerely , Kevin Simms, St. Anthony Newfoundland

Dear Barb,
I want to pass along my deepest condolences on Michael’s passing. He was deeply dedicated to his patients and teaching. I remember Michael from medical school, but when I came on staff 20 years ago, I got to know him very well as our secretaries shared a common workspace. I would often bump into Michael ant his secretaries desk, and I enjoyed his wit and I will miss chatting with him. May he rest in peace.

Today my husband and I are very saddened to learn of Dr.Paul’s death. My husband was his patient for many years and I was his caregiver.I always accompanied my husband to his appointments. We admired his professionalism and the care he gave .. .Dr.Paul and I shared many of our common likes also at that time.He will be missed.

I once had to call Dr Paul at 3am to come dialyze a patient in ICU. We’d already been in touch with him earlier and said that the lady “probably” wouldn’t need to be done until the next day. He still came in to help, even with some wry good humour about the whole thing.. That’s the kind of physician – and person – he was, and we have lost him too soon. Many condolences.

41 years and l came over the many years to greatly appreciate him professionally and personally.
He was quiet and reserved , a tremendous physician in competence, knowledge and caring touch for his patients.

We were fortunate in our Province to have “acquired “ him.

Michael was always my smart older cousin. I knew he was a dedicated doctor. Im glad I got to text with him in the last few years. Almost visiting last year, thinking that there was still time to visit him in the future. Well there isn’t time. I still hope to visit his beloved shul and see his floor to ceiling book cases and visit Barbara. Michael was the one who knew all our family history. It was him I turned to to find out about our cousins in Israel or identify family photos from the “old country”. Im shocked and saddened by his passing. To Barbara, Sylvia and Helen and Bob and Amanda: please accept my deepest condolences. May your memories of Michael be a blessing.
Debra and Lewis

Michael was a very special.person, and I trust that happy memories will comfort you in times to come.

Our last names were the same and although unrelated by family, Dr. Paul and I were connected through a mutual respect for the printed word and its manifestations within the world of antiquarian Jewish texts. His generosity and good humour characterized the spirit and subtext of the Jewish Public Library’s rare books initiative, and simply put, he will be missed.

Dear Barbara, we were shocked and saddened to hear of Michael’s passing. It was wonderful to reconnect with him a few years ago, and to meet you as well.
We recall fondly our evening at your home last year when we visited St. John’s, as well as the dinner we had together at our home in Toronto.
Michael was a special human being. He had an impressive range of interests from vintage books to Jewish heritage and practice, to cartography and numismatics. And of course his deep knowledge of nephrology, excellent patient care, mentoring and teaching.
We will miss his friendship.
May his memory be for a blessing.

I highly respected Dr Paul for his wealth of knowledge and his dedication to his patients.
Dr Grandy, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to you and your family at this difficult time.

I was saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Paul. I worked closely with him for about 10 years in the Medical School where he was well known as an engaged educator with a great commitment to his patients. Whenever someone was needed to serve on a committee, he was always one of the first to step up. His quick wit and dry sense of humor was endearing and I know his loss will be felt province wide. My sincere sympathy to you all..

Dr. Paul was the type of teacher you never forget. He challenged you in way that made you want to be better. I still remember his lessons 25 years later. So sorry for your loss.

Dr. Grandy and family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the sudden and unexpected loss of Michael. I was employed as the charge nurse of the hemodialysis unit at the Health Sciences Centre from 1984 to 1993 and worked closely with Michael during that time. He was an exceptional clinician and a great mentor to the medical students and nursing staff. His love of medicine was obvious. He cared deeply for his patients.

On a personal note, I will never forgot how generous Michael was with his time and knowledge when he discovered that as part of a course I was doing at the time I had to explore Judaism and its customs and beliefs. He invited me to the synagogue to observe and learn, and patiently answered my many questions. He was so helpful! I greatly appreciated his willingness to teach and support me in my studies. In return for his kind gesture he only asked for chocolate chip cookies which I gladly provided.

Rest in Peace Michael.

Dr. Grandy and Family,

Dr Barb and family…..I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr Paul’s passing. He was my kidney doctor for many years, and my Dad’s before that. He pulled no punches, but was always attentive to my situation and concerned when my health took a deep dive in the spring of 2023. (medication I was on for another issue). I last saw him in late November 2023, when the decision was made that I go on dialysis. I am very grateful for his persistence , as things are working out great. Dear Barb My sincere condolences on your loss and the loss to Newfoundland and Labrador’s medical community . He did visiting clinics – and at times served most parts of the iskand and Labrador. I sat on several committees at the University with him and afterwards always had interesting chats about a variety of eclectic things. His dedication was seen as he persued his practice over the past number of years despite his difficulties . I know he was a mainstay of the Jewish community here as well. Hold your memories tight, they are precious
Take care Ean Parsons

We wish to offer our deepest sympathies to Barbara and Family on Michael’s recent sudden passing. We first met Michael in 1983 when he arrived in St. John’s. At the time I was a Medical Resident and as time went on, I would become one of his Medical Colleagues . We would meet many times over the years on aircraft, as we often crisscrossed the province, doing travelling Medical Clinics in our respective Specialties. I’m sure Michael literally must have done over a thousand travelling clinics.

Michael has made a huge contribution to his Medical Community, especially looking after his renal patients from every nook and cranny of our great province. We are all well aware of his tremendous contribution he has made to his St. John’s Community in many different aspects especially his Synagogue..

Barbara, again our deepest condolences. Michael will be missed.

Hi Barb.
So sorry to hear of Michael’s sudden and unexpected passing. I know he was a kind, considerate man who served the patients of Newfoundland well.
I remember on time calling a different on call nephrologist for advice-that person was totally unhelpful. The next day I called Michael-he listened and gave awesome advice.

Barb and Michael’s family, my deepest condolences on Michael’s passing.

To Dr. Grandy and family of Dr. Paul,
I am so deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dr. Paul. My sincere condolences to you are your family. I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Paul for the past 13 years in the hemodialysis unit in St. Anthony and over the past year and half have been working more closely as a prerenal nurse with him for the Labrador Grenfell region. Dr. Paul was an inspiration to us all with his passion and devotion to his work and his patients. He had a work ethic like no other. I have gained a great deal of knowledge from Dr. Paul that I will carry throughout my career. He has undoubtedly helped me in being a better renal nurse and it is a great honor to have known and worked alongside Dr. Paul. To say Dr. Paul will be dearly missed is an understatement, he will never be forgotten.

I am very saddened to hear this news and sending my condolences to Barb and the family. I worked with him on the MCC committee and he fought for every physician in that work unbeknownst to those physicians, trying to ensure they received fair treatment. He was a dedicated physician who was an excellent clinician and patient centered in his care. He was dry and witty once he warmed up to you. Sending love and big hugs. We were shocked to read this terrible news. Michael was a good friend to my late parents Larry and Lorraine Nathanson when he first settled in st. John’s. He spent many shabbos and holiday meals at their table. And when my parents joined their family In Toronto they remained in touch. Even from afar, Michael helped us navigate my parents various health issues which was deeply appreciated . Our sincere condolences to his family especially his mother who my parents met on several occasions.
May Michaels memory be for a blessing and maay the family know no more sorrow.

So shocked to hear of Dr Paul’s passing. Always enjoyed our chats during lunch breaks while he was working in Grand Falls-Windsor. Sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Barbara,

We were so sad to hear of Michael’s passing. As students at the time when Michael was just beginning his career at Memorial University, we were very fortunate to have had him as a teacher and mentor. He was dedicated to his patients and forever generous with his time and knowledge to us, his students.

Our sincere condolences to you and the rest of Michael’s family.

Dear Barbara and Extended Family Members, I was blessed to have known Michael, to have experienced his compassionate care for so many of our Sisters, and to have worked with him as we endeavored to create a renewed healthcare system in our region in the late 1990s. I had many conversations with him about our shared love for the Hebrew Scriptures as he helped me understand his rich tradition. I rejoice that my nephew (Michael Davis) has also had the privilege of knowing and learning from Michael.
In Michael’s memory, I share with you this Jewish reflection on life and death:
The light of life is a finite flame. Like the Shabbat candles, life is kindled, it burns, it glows, it is radiant with warmth and beauty. But soon it fades, its substance is consumed, and it is no more. In light we see; in light we are seen. The flames dance and our life burns down and gutters. There is an end to the flames. We see no more and are no more seen, yet we do not despair, for we are more than a memory slowly fading into the darkness. With our lives we give life. Something of us can never die: we move in the eternal cycle of darkness and death, of light and life.
With deep gratitude for Michael’s influence on my life and leadership, Sister Elizabeth Davis

Dear Barbara
Please accept our sincere condolences

I was so saddened to hear of Dr. Paul’s passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

As a lifelong kidney patient, I’ve known Dr. Paul pretty much my entire life. He was a committed physician, annd despite feeling intimidated by his presence as a child, I knew him to be always thorough and very patient focused. I always felt heard and respected. I trusted his care decisions, even if they were challenging ones. Newfoundland was lucky to receive his service and skill for some 40 years. May he rest easy.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Paul’s passing, he has been my kidney Doctor for years. Sending my condolences to his family, friends and patients.

Dr. Paul took me under his wing in march 1996! At 28 years old I ended up in kidney failure and later diagnosed with Cystinuria Disease. Dr. Paul treated me like family. What ever he told me to do to improve my health I did it. He was so happy when I received my kidney transplant 5 years ago. He sure will be missed! Sure a fantastic Dr. and I was so lucky to call him my Dr. Condolences to his family.

Dr. B, I am so sorry to hear of Michael’s sudden passing. Thinking of you at this difficult time. Art and I are out of town this week so unable to attend Michael’s funeral. Heartfelt condolences to you and all the family.

I will fondly remember Dr Paul this evening and have a couple of chocolate chip cookies in his honor.. (He did tell me my cookies were his favorite.) Take care.

Barbara,
I know we never met but Michael spoke of you all the time when we spoke or met in Toronto. I am in shock hearing this news of Michael’s sudden passing. We went to med school together. He marched at my wedding and my wife Nancy and I had him over for Shabbat dinners Friday night regularly. I am so sorry for your loss. Michael was a quiet, gentle person. He was a dedicated physician and from what I heard from residents who came to Toronto from St. John’s a great teacher. I will think of him often with fond memories. May his memory be for a blessing.

To Dr, Paul’s friends and family; Dr.Paul was my dad’s doctor and as a result we had many conversations. Years later we spoke many time on our flights from Gander to St. John’s. A very caring doctor and very open to conversation about his faith . Always friendly and courteous. He will be missed. R.I.P. Dr. Paul. 🙏🙏

Barbara;
I met you a couple of years ago at the home of Sid Nusinowitz in Toronto over dinner. I went to med school with Michael almost 50 years ago. He was a kind and gentle soul, always upbeat and dedicated to his patients. I’m so sorry for your loss, may his memory be a blessing.

Barbara,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband’s passing. I only met him a couple of times but he was my mother’s nephrologist when she was on dialysis. My mother thought he was a great doctor and that is saying a lot from my mother, a former psychiatric nurse, who did not praise up doctors very much.

Janet (Martin) Powell

Barb and Family,
