Noel lived an extraordinary life.
Born in Athenry, County Galway in the, then, Irish Free State, Noel was a proud Irishman until the very end. Without compromise, he maintained his Irish citizenship while also completely assimilating with his New Found Land – Talamh an Eisc. He came not only for the professional opportunity but also to be unleashed upon “the land of the fishes”. Noel went to boarding school in Dublin at the age of seven years, first to Willow Park School and then to Blackrock College. It is there, eventually with his brothers by his side, that his competitive spirit, thirst for excellence and love for the game of rugby was fostered. It is a game that permeated his entire existence, playing rugby for Blackrock, the Irish Universities, the Provinces of Connaught (Ireland) and Newfoundland, and was proud to be capped on several occasions for Canada.
He was instrumental in the resurrection of the game of rugby in Newfoundland. He was a founding member of the Newfoundland Rugby Union and the founding Captain and President of the Swilers Rugby Club. He took great pleasure in the success of the Swilers on and off the field and was instrumental in the growth and success of Newfoundland rugby as a player, coach and builder. A consummate sportsman, whilst a university student, he also boxed as a light heavyweight and rowed in the men’s 8’s for the Irish Universities.
Noel attended National University of Ireland Galway (UCG) where he earned his medical degree. He came to Newfoundland as a medical intern with a plan to stay for 1 year, but on his first day met the love of his life, Christina (Rae) Lowe and the rest is history. They built a fabulous life together in St. John’s surrounded by an ever growing circle of friends and family. Noel joined the Cornwall Clinic and practiced family medicine for over 52 years, retiring at age 74 when his health could no longer allow him to continue. He cared for several generations of many families, had a large obstetrical practice early in his career and was the Medical Director of St. Lukes homes in the latter part. He actually delivered the children of babies that he originally ushered into this world, while at the same time managing the medical needs of their parents and grandparents. He will be remembered for his black bag and overshoes doing house calls until the day he closed his practice.
When not on the rugby pitch or in the office he was an avid outdoorsman. He was a terror to anything with scales or feathers. The partridge of the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas still shudder when they hear his name. He spent many a grand day on the wild and unspoiled rivers of Newfoundland, Labrador, the waters off Vancouver Island, and returned to his native land on many occasions to fish on Lough Corrib and the gentle rivers of the West of Ireland. He loved to jig a cod, pull a trap and liberate a lobster or two. He was an enthusiastic gardener and took great pride in friendly neighbourhood rivalries to “out produce” his neighbours’ plots.
Noel received many accolades; he was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame, the Rugby Canada Hall of Fame, the Newfoundland Rugby Union Hall of Fame, the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Leaving with many fond memories is the love of his life, Christina (Rae) Browne (nee Lowe), sons Dr. Greg Browne (Libby Carew), Noel Browne Jr (Meg Gillies) and daughter Dr. Nancy Browne (Dr. Rob Cochran), grandchildren, Liam, Evan and Finbar Browne, Emmett and Thea Cochran, and sister Mary and family. He leaves many cherished relatives including nieces and nephews in Ireland and British Columbia and many cousins throughout Ireland and the U.K. He leaves a wide circle of friends and neighbours who were as important to him as family. Many will remember fabulous meals followed by legendary ‘sing a longs’ around Noel and Christina’s table, that lasted well into the wee hours. He also leaves a legacy of generations of young athletes upon whose lives he had massive impact as a mentor, coach and role model. He is predeceased by his brothers Dr.’s Tom and Michael (Mick), the latter of whom left us only 3 weeks ago.
Noel was a man of large emotions who stimulated fierce pride and love among those connected to him. This inspired those close to him to rise above themselves and to become their very best in all pursuits, on the field and off. He was known for his soft heart, caring, and compassion as much as for his competitive spirit, toughness and grit. No stranger to controversy, he always spoke his mind and stood firmly for what he believed was right. He left everything he touched better than when he found it. He lived life on his own terms and left nothing on the table. He was a legend.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, July 5 and Monday, July 6, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A celebration of Noel’s life will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, Noel has requested people make donations to the “Dr. Noel Browne Legacy Fund” at the Swilers RFC (EMT swilersrugby@gmail.com or mail Swilers Rugby Club, 100 Crosbie Road, St. John’s, NL, A1B 3W4). Rugby enthusiasts are invited to become social members of the Swilers RFC in honor of Noel via the following link – buy.stripe.com. All proceeds from these endeavours will be directed to further development of the sport and the club that was his pride and joy.

I was very sorry to hear of your father’s passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.
Although I left Newfoundland many years ago and never had the chance to properly thank him, he had a lasting impact. As my rugby coach, he had a unique way of getting the very best out of his players. There was a fine line between fear and respect, but more than anything, you wanted to earn his approval because it meant something.
The lessons he taught us about discipline, commitment, and teamwork have stayed with me long after my playing days were over. I still find myself drawing on those lessons today.
Please know that he made a real difference in the lives of many young people, and I will always be grateful to have been one of them.

I and my family got to know Noel, who I always called Riley as a child due to my dad’s close friendship with another of Riley’s hunting/fishing buddies and because he was my aunt and uncle’s doctor for years.
I have several memories of him over the years with his buddies Wally and Noel when they would show up at the cabin, in the worst clothes they owned, an expensive bottle of wine to have with their fish when they got in and promises from my mom to make stewed fish for them after they finished fishing. It was always a much requested item everytime they came because according to each of them at some point, no one else could make it quite the same way. Usually stories and songs tended to follow. No one else can do Fields of Athenry justice like he could.
I pass long condolences to his wife, children and extended family. He was an amazing man who always talked warmly of his wife and children

I was very fortunate to have Dr. Browne as my personal physician for over 30 years. I was less fortunate to be the scrum half he ran over a few times on the rugby pitch.

The one my mother loves the most, was from the time he was competing on the Go-carts at Splash and Put in Traytown. He did what ever it took to beat the lads! We laughed so much. I met and played with Browne in early 1970’s as part of the original 21 or so that loved the game. I think he had connections back then with the Harbor master because frantic phone calls would go around town when a Commonwealth ship arrived that could. Field a team..
The original Swilers tour of Ontario mid 70’s was where our friendship was strengthened as we were billeted together several times. His passion and enthusiasm for the game including organizing and raising funds to bring the Barbarians Rugby club (Baa-Baas) tour to the east Coast was legendary.
He will be truly missed but memories of him are always spoken of when I return to the Province.

Although it’s been years since I last spoke with Noel, I have fond Rugby memories reaching back to the 1970’s. He was a pioneer to the game and introduced a whole new culture to NL. I am so grateful to be a part of that. His enthusiasm, dedication and passion for the sport was genuine and continued throughout his life. Noel was a well respected man for his huge contributions and kindness which improved the lives of many. Truly a personality too big for words.

There is not another person on this island who had a bigger than life personality than Noel Browne. A leader on the rugby pitch who played for many years as a legend and would stop in the middle of a match to apply his medical expertise to a wounded player then play on. An entrepreneur, story teller, athlete, physician, advisor, creator, coach, personality and statesman, ambassador to Newfoundland. The stories will be told for many years about the famous Irishman having such an impact on this Island. Despite all of the famous tales there is a personal one I will never forget. On a blustery Christmas Eve in the early 1960’s Dr. Browne took the time to make a house call on a little girl who was burning up with a fever. That little girl later became a family doctor and my wife.
My condolences to Dr. Noel Browne’s family and large circle of friends. Many a toast will be made in his name.

My fondest memory of that time was sitting in my father’s fishing shed in quidi vidi, on the day of the Regatta and enjoying playful banter, storytelling, laugher, and drinks with Noel and others. He was a great storyteller, a smart, charming, and witty man. Some of his storytelling included his wife, his children, and other family members and through his humour there was sense of love and pride toward them all. May he rest in peace.

I recall the very first time I played a rugby game on the pitch at the Lake and seen the big man and said to myself wow what a competitor and that he was. The word “legend” is often overused. Not in this case though. St Peter, even if he wanted, would have no chance preventing Noel rumbling through the pearly gates for a try. Dragging the rest of the pack with him.
I remember as a child the presence of the giant of a man in size and character that was Uncle Noel. He had a way of making you feel safe and loved just with a look. The excitement we felt knowing Uncle Noel and family were coming home to Ireland from Newfoundland was amazing. I have many fond memories that i will cherish. Rest well Uncle Noel. I’ll always remember his generosity, his wicked sense of humour, and, most of all, I’ll remember him as my dad’s best friend. My heart goes out to Christina, Greg, Noel and Nancy. He will be dearly missed.

Your family and the many friends of Dr. Browne are in our thoughts and prayers today. What is there to say when a man of this legendary character leaves us? To say he left an imprint everywhere he tread would be an understatement. He improved so many lives personally and professionally. His family is his ultimate legacy but his compassionate service to others is also immeasurable. To lift a small province like NL to the top of the rugby ladder is a feat only accomplished by a great leader with a lifetime dedication. God bless you Dr. Browne, you made a difference and will be well remembered.
So very sad to read of his passing. He was such a fine, respected gentleman and Physician. He spoke his mind, he was funny, he listened to and respected the nursing staff with whom he worked, and he was very much loved by the residents of Saint Luke’s Homes. My condolences to all his family, especially his wife Christina. Always enjoyed spending time together at Board dinners and special functions. He was one of a kind. My heart aches for your loss. ❤️

Sincere condolences to Christina, Greg, Noel Jnr Nancy and all Noel and Christina’s grandchildren who joined us all in Ireland for a wonderful Browne family reunion a few years ago.
I have many fond memories of Noel when we were all young cousins in Ireland and England. Especially during the school holidays from Blackrock College when both he and Mike would come to spend time with us. A remarkable cousin to have and a born leader. May his soul and all the souls of the deceased members of the Browne Family Rest In Peace.
Christina and family, so sorry to hear of Noel’s passing. He treated 5 generations of my family. From my grandmother, Mae Connolly, my dad, Bernard, me, my children and my grandson. He will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.

He has brought me back to life on several occasions of serious illness. And the only doctor that i know that would work all day and make house calls after hours. Dr. Browne was my family doctor for the better part of 45 years , a excellent doctor and a fine gentleman. I won’t soon forget him.
