Obituary

Dr. Ursula Sampath

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother Ursula Sampath.

Predeceased by her eldest son Niels, she leaves to mourn her husband of 63 years, Hugh, her son Steven, grandson Ahren, brother Reinhard, daughters-in-law Rohini and Ying, and other loving family and friends.

Ursula was deeply kind, generous and affectionate, always putting others ahead of herself. A gifted academic who took a keen personal interest in her students, she was also a talented artist, baker and cook, and traveled many corners of the world. Above all, with her beautiful smile, she loved giving warm hospitality and care to family, friends, and strangers.

Her family is celebrating her life privately. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund, or to a charity of your choice.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Ursula Sampath’s family. I have fond memories from my years at MUN. She was my Professor, mentor, M.A. Thesis Supervisor, colleague. After I left MUN, we stayed in contact over the years. Her smile and positivity will be missed. She cared very much about her students, the German Club, her family. She spoke of her family often, her travels. You and your family are in my thoughts during this time.

Deepest sympathy to you all on Dr. Sampath’s passing. My parents (Basil and Marlene Hickey) on Sherwood Drive enjoyed dinner parties with Ursula. She had a vivacious personality and a love of life. Treasure your memories.

I studied German at MUN in the early 90’s and I remember Dr. Sampath as a warm, positive person and a great teacher. I recall the German Club being invited to her house for a potluck one time, too. She was very supportive of us students. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

My sincere condolences. I joined the German program after Dr. Sampath’s retirement but her name was fondly remembered.

Dr. Sampath touched hundreds of lives with her combination of fun seriousness as a Professor at MUN. She took teaching seriously but she always knew how to involve her students in a community of common goals and interests. She had a kind heart and keen intellect and she stood out among MUN faculty for all the best reasons. She was much admired and appreciated. My condolences to her family…

Dearest Hugh and Steven I am so sorry to hear of Ursula’s passing. She was a wonderful neighbour and friend to all my family. I have such good memories of meals, the Chiquita banana stickers, and the attic train room. Many hours spent playing baseball in the yard and in later years bringing my own son to “the hundred acre woods” to see the fish pond. She was a kind and gentle lady..

I knew Niels for 53 years. I met Ursula when I was 8 years old. I remember her driving me home from school, bringing milk and cookies to Niels’s room when were studying his fish tanks, and her love for her beautiful family. She was such a cool mom! She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
