I remember Mr. Mudge from Grade 8 History Class at Bishop Abraham High School. My wife is a a great teacher and I was talking with her tonight about how great an impact teachers have on our lives. I haven’t been in a classroom with Mr. Mudge for 41 years and I can tell you he was the best teacher I ever had.

Very sad to find out he has passed tonight. His family should be so proud of the teacher he was.

Sincerely,

Brian Collier

I have just learned of Mr. Mudge’s passing. I was saddened to hear this news. My sincere condolences to his family. The world has lost a wonderful man and great teacher. I was also one of Mr. Mudge’s students at Bishop Abraham Jr. High in the early 1970’s. His plesant ways and sense of humour always made it a pleasure to go to school. There is nothing to add, as from reading down through the condolences, I see that everything has been said. It is nice to see all of these familiar names of former teachers of mine and so many students who gave their condolences. I hope that this brings some comfort to his family. Rest in peace Mr. Mudge. You will be remembered fondly.

Mr Mudge was one of my favorite teachers. I was lucky enough to be one of his students at Bishop Abraham (1977-80) and I still think of him often. He was a great teacher. My sincere condolences to his family.

I had too few teachers who engaged me. At Bishop Abraham, I had a few, at the top of the list was Mr Mudge. I loved learning history from him, and the love of it has lasted all my life.

So very sorry to hear of Edgar’s passing.
He was so very welcoming and supportive of me
when I started at Bishop Abraham as a beginning
Teacher. As attested by all, he was a gifted teacher
who cared deeply about the true values of his
profession. He had the utmost care and respect for
his students. Our sincere condolences to Shirley and
Family.

Teacher.

Edgar was my a man of strength, guidance and a great influence on my life when he was vice principal at MPJH.
He really left a positive impact on my life and will be sadly missed by many. Time goes by so fast and I want to share my sincere condolences to Ingrid and the entire family.

I remember Mr. Mudge with great fondness from my days in junior high school. He was a favourite teacher of mine and many others in my classes. His gentle and knowledgeable spirit lives on in my memory. You are close in my thoughts at this difficult time.

My heart is broken but I am filled with a full lifetime of beautiful memories of this man who was like no other. He was my cherished godfather and was a big part of my life growing up. His family is my family’ and I grieve with them. To lighten the sorrow, I now picture Edgar and Dad having a drink or three and laughing at some story or playing a game of cards.
He was indeed One in a million and I will miss him terribly, forever.

Shirley, Ingrid, and Heidi,
My sincere condolences on the passing of Edgar. His kindness, welcoming nature, and stories will truly be missed.

Heidi and family,
We are so deeply sorry for your loss. Your father was a great man and will be missed tremendously. He had such a perfect balance of laughter and learning – teaching so many the importance of respectfulness, while offering others a witty joke and kind smile.

Our sincere condolences.

We both had Mr. Mudge as our History teacher in Grades 7 through 9 in the mid 70’s. He was an excellent teacher … he was witty, caring and instilled respect. On separate occasions we bumped into Mr. Mudge decades later and he instantly knew us. Our sincere condolences to his family.

Shirley and Family,
It is with great sadness that I offer deepest condolences to you at this time of Edgar’s passing .
I will always cherish the many years we taught together and , of course , the many parties and fun nights of card playing we had . Please know that he was

So sorry to hear of Mr.Mudges passing. I was a student at Bishop Abraham in the late 70’s. Mr.Mudge stood out as one of the best teachers that I had during my school years..Sincere condolences to the family …

Shirley and Family,
We were so saddened today to read of Edgar’s passing in The Telegram obituary. Today I’m reflecting on the many wonderful memories I have of our 13 years together on the staff of Bishop Abraham Junior High School in the late 1960’s and 70’s.

Professionally, of course, Edgar was a master teacher, in total command of his subject area and he imparted it to his students with immense skill, humour, and sincerity, always in the context of respect and compassion for his students. As the many tributes from his former students indicate, they loved and respected him in return. Personally, you could have no truer friend. Oh, the fun and great times at the staff parties (especially the Halloween parties), the poker games, the skidoo trips on Saturdays to Charlie’s cabin, and on and on!
Edgar was the true “salt of the earth”.

Sincerest sympathy to you all.
Bob and Netta

Shirley, my heart is with all of you as you cope with Edgar’s passing. The connection between himself and Dick was long-standing, beginning with Edgar’s teaching days In Bonne Bay. To Shirley and all of Edgar’s family, sincerest condolences on his death.
Although I have not had direct contact with Edgar in recent years I have fond memories of growing up and going to school with Edgar in Norris Point. I also have pleasant remembrances,. as young graduates from high school,. setting out together to prepare for the profession of teacher, a quest profoundly achieved by him but from which I deviated, probably accounting for the lack of contact in recent times.
I can also say that through the years I have had many contact with friends of Edgar who without exception spoke highly of him as a family man, a teacher and a friend to all. I’m sure he will be missed and I trust the pleasant memories you have of a life well lived will sustain you in this difficult time..
May he R.I.P.

Reg and Marina Reid

My condolences to the Mudge family on Edgar’s passing..He was our vice principal when I taught at MPJH..He was very professional in that role as well as both personable and approachable to both teachers and students. He certainly had a positive impact on the many lives he touched. He will always be fondly remembered..

I was so sad to hear this news today about the passing of Mr. Mudge. A handful of teachers leave a mark on a child’s life and he definately made one on mine. He was the most beloved teacher at Bishop Abraham Junior High – he handled kids from all walks of life with all kinds of smarts with dignity and respect always. He pushed me to be smarter, think harder, and not be satisfied with less than the best I could give. He set the bar very high as far as teachers go, I think of him often and wish his family my sincere condolences.

It has been more than 40 years since I sat in Mr. Mudge’s classroom, yet I think about him so frequently. He is the first person that comes to mind when discussing favourite teachers. Our paths never crossed after junior high, so it was very bittersweet to see his name in my timeline today. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Mr. Mudge was my favourite teacher at Bishop Abraham Junior High. He was a true mentor for me in many ways and I am forever grateful he was in my life for even a short period of time. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I had the privilege of being a student under Edgar supervision back in the day. Have to say he truly was an inspiration to a teaching intern. My sincere condolences to his entire family.

To Shirley and all of Edgar’s family our sincerest condolences on his passing. Unfortunately I have not had much contact with Edgar in recent years but I have many fond memories of growing up and attending school with him in Norris Point. I remember as well when, as young high school graduates, we set out together on a quest to become teachers, a quest that he obviously achieved profoundly but from which I deviated and hence lost direct contact.
I do know persons who were friends of Edgar and who have unanimously attested to his stature as a good friend, family man and successful teacher..
May the good memories of his life well spent sustain you at this difficult time and may he R.I.P.

Reg and Marina Reid

Shirley, Ingrid, Heidi (Jason), grandchildren, the Randell family and other family members. What more can I say about my friend, Edgar that has not already been said.

We worked together as fellow Social Studies educators at Bishop Abraham Junior High during the late 60’s to the mid 70’s and at Mount Pearl Junior High in the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s.

Edgar will be remembered as a “Teacher’s Teacher” in that he was always knowledgable of his subject, always prepared for classs, always applied humour to his presentation and always treated his students with respect as young adults.

For over a 50 year span, we worked both as professional educators and socialized in many forms creating enough happy memories to fill a book. Choosing one memory, I remember fondly at an assembly to recognize Edgar’s retirement, he received a standing ovation from over 700 junior high students and teachers as a testament of the respect that he attained.

My friend, you will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Doug and Elsie Wells

Rest easy Mr. Mudge. You will always be a big part of my school experience.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. God bless you all 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Shirley, Ingrid, Heidi and families, I am so sorry to learn of Edgar’s passing. I always enjoyed my interactions with him. Memory takes me back to Ireland’s KinderStart year when Poppy accompanied her on her visits. Edgar seemed to have as much fun as Ireland…if not more!!! I’ve read the tributes to him. What an outstanding legacy he has left – to touch the lives of children in such a meaningful way. It’s what teachers strive to do and how they wish to be remembered. Bravo to Edgar on a job well done! I hope that you can take comfort in knowing that he meant so much to others. My sincere condolences. I will be thinking of you all. Linda

Telling stories outa school. I taught with Edgar for eleven years, and played poker with him for many more. He sold me his second hand Gremlin. Yes, Gremlin. The joke that went around for many years was, he sold the car to me because he couldn’t bring himself to see it to a friend. Love you Mudgy. Rest peacefully my friend. Btw, he bottled the best calamari on the Rock.

To Shirley and Family Ann and I are very sorry to hear about Edgar’s passing. we knew both of you through my brother in law Doug Wells. also I played darts and floor hockey with Edgar.
May he rest in peace.

Mrs. Mudge and Family,
I am another person who had the honor to be educated by Mr. Mudge at Bishop Abraham Junior High. Edgar had the ability to make history interesting and fun, and his love and concern for his students were paramount. Many years later my son had the same experience when he was in Mrs. Shirley Mudge class at Morris Academy . Both of you have had such an impact on our lives. Thank you!
To Shirley, Ingrid, Heidi and all the family our deepest sympathy.

Mrs. Mudge, Ingrid and Heidi, I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Mudge’s passing. He was a remarkable man! Smart, funny and so kind hearted. When I was the new kid on Third Street, he made feel incredibly welcomed and part of your family whenever I was in your home. Years later, I would see him every December at the MP Christmas parade and he would be beaming with pride talking about his 3 grandchildren. Cherish all your memories. Sending our sincere condolences to you all.

Mr. Mudge was a teacher that I never forgot about. I have spoken about him to my own kids, as the History teacher I had, that spoke with passion and was able to catch my attention and make History class, one of my favorite classes. My deepest condolences to Gerald’s family and friends.

RIP Mr. Mudge

Mr. Mudge was one of my favourite teachers and I still have very fond memories of my time in his class at Bishop Abraham. My condolences to his family.

I remember he was my history teacher who gave us a lot of notes but that’s how we learned, DeAnna former student at Bishop Abraham Jr high my condolences to all his family, friends and former colleagues

Like so many of Mr. Mudge’s former students, I always name him when talking about memorable and incredible teachers. He surely made his mark on many. He was kind and encouraging and brought his subjects to life. My condolences to his family and friends.

My friends and I often reminisce about our years at Bishop Abraham Junior High being some of our favourites. Mr. Mudge was one of the incredible teachers who left an indelible mark on many of our hearts. Thinking of his family, friends and former colleagues in this tremendous loss. May it be of comfort to know that he will be remembered by so many with the biggest smile.
Nancy Russell Corbett

My deepest sympathy to Shirley and the family. My memories of Edgar are fantastic. Our poker games and our skidoo trips to the cabin will never be forgotten.
Charlie Norris

Both Nancy and I were lucky enough to be taught by Edgar at Bishop Abraham.. It was easy to see he loved what he did – his classes were fun, interesting and we knew he really wanted us to succeed. After I graduated as a teacher in the late 1980s Edgar hired me as a substitute at Mt. Pearl Junior High where he was a great mentor to a young teacher. I have never forgotten just how valuable a experience that was – our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Doug and Nancy LeDrew

Condolences to the Mudge family. Mr. Mudge was a well respected educator who had a sincere interest in his students success. May he test in peace.

Condolences to the Mudge family . I am another of Mr. Mudge’s students from Bishop Abraham Junior High. We all loved his classes- he was always interesting and funny and we always felt that he was genuinely interested in us as people. When I met him many years later, quite by accident, he remembered me- even my name! By hiring me as a substitute teacher at Mount Pearl Junior High, he started me on my 36 year teaching career here in town. I was so privileged to have worked with him as a colleague as well as having had him as a teacher. A wonderful human being- one of the best!

A wonderful teacher who had a lasting influence on me as a student at Bishop Abraham. My sincere condolences.

Mrs Mudge and family,
I have great memories of him always being willing to stay after school to help us with any questions we had. He was a great teacher and will be sadly missed. Your family is in my prayers.

Mrs. Mudge, Ingrid, Heidi and family,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Mudge. I have many great memories of your dad growing up, in later years Mr. Mudge would always have a chat and always ask if me and Ingrid were still going to run away in our RV.
You are all in our Thoughts and Prayers and we are Sending Love.

Jody, Scott L, Betty and Scott

I treasure the memories of this fine man. Edgar had such a wonderful sense of place and his stories shared when we taught together at Bishop Abraham were life lessons. I fondly remember his endless supply of seafood when it was his turn to host poker games.

Mr Mudge taught me history in junior high and was the first teacher who spoke to me as a “smaller adult.” One of a handful who I can say without question positively influenced the next 50 years of my life. He couldn’t do much about my handwriting, but he countered my sauciness and tendency to daydream by making his classes the most interesting part of the school day. I’ve never met the family, but am sure that their loss is keenly felt and their memories fond.

Sincerest condolences to Mr. Mudge’s family and friends. He was my Grade 7 – 9 History teacher at Bishop Abraham JH way back in the 70s and always quickly came to mind whenever I reflected on the best teachers I ever had. He was a master edutainer in the classroom and an inspiration for my own teaching career. I hope he realized how much his students loved him and grew to love history because of him.

The world has lost a fine gentleman. We have many good memories of staff parties and fun with Edgar. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Shirley and the family. God bless.

Jerry and Eileen Riche

To Shirley and Family, including 2 of your brothers that I have met, and Edgar’s Siblings, Gus and Iris.

Sincere condolences on Edgar’s passing. I have wonderful memories of our growing up together in Norris Point – trouting trips up the Arm, bonfires, school, Army Cadets, and many other activities. Not the least of which was a 2 week fishing stint at Broom Point with his Dad and Uncles. They put us through our paces for sure. Edgar and I were also room mates for a year at Rothermere House at MUN. Unfortunately we did drift apart over the years, but the memories didn’t!
A great guy. May he Rest in Peace
Best
Herb and Nora

Great teacher, condolences to his family RIP

I am saddened to hear of Mr Mudge’s passing. He was a wonderful teacher who made a huge impact on so many of his students lives. It’ a not easy to make history class fun, but he certainly did! Remembering him with much fondness. Condolences to his family.

I have very fond memories of Mr. Mudge teaching me at the junior high school level. As a teacher of more than 30 years, I always remember the fun and engagement that he brought to the classroom setting- and have tried to share such strategies with my students. RIP Mr. Mudge

Dear Shirley and Family,

I just heard this very sad news from another of our Bishop Abraham colleagues. I am so very sorry for your loss. I have great memories of Edgar from our days at Bishop Abraham, our Thursday night poker games, and our many staff parties – at your house and ours. Unfortunately we all seem to have drifted apart since our retirement, and I haven’t seen him for quite awhile.; and I regret that so very much. God bless you all.

Mr. Mudge was my grade six teached way back in 1968/69 at Holloway School. Other than the Art & Music teachers I remember him being the first male “classroom” teacher at the school and he was wonderful! Many, many years later, around 2007, I was at a meeting for the Mount Pearl Show Choir, of which my daughter was a member, and a gentleman approached me, and said ‘hello Heather, remember me? It was Mr. Mudge! He will not be fogotten. My condolences to all who loved him

Dear Shirley and family,

Nicole just sent me the in memoriam. We are so sorry for your loss. I didn’t know he was so sick. We have many wonderful memories over the years. He was so sweet and jovial. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. I am in shock. If you need anything let us know. Take care. Lois and Darroch

Shirley and family,
So sorry to hear of Edgar’s passing. As you know I had many fun moments with both you and Edgar but I guess the best one was your sharing the story of when I was only months old. I still smile when I think of that and see Edgar’s mischievous grin!
Cherish the wonderful memories that you created together and I pray that they will provide some comfort as you journey forward.
Prayers and blessings to all,
Lorna
