Edgar John Hindy (October 16, 1933 – January 6, 2026)
With broken hearts the family of Edgar John Hindy sadly announces the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, on January 6, 2026, surrounded by love.
Edgar is predeceased by his parents, Norman and Bessie Hindy; his brother Charlie Hindy; his son, Ed Hindy (2017); and his grandson, Adam Hindy (2025).
Lovingly remembered with a life time of wonderful memories, his wife of 68 years, Shirley Hindy; his daughter Karen (Greg Preston); his grandchildren, Angela Hindy-Omand (Shawn), Amanda Gosse (Doug), Ryan Preston (Brittany), and Kayla Preston; his great-grandchildren, Ashton Hindy, Madison and Joshua Omand, and Emily and Liam Gosse; daughter-in-law Lynn Hindy (Wade); brother Martin Hindy (Sharon) and sister Norma Medford; nephew Albert Hefford (Valerie); niece Judy Hefford (Karen), and other extended family and friends.
Born on October 16, 1933, in Winterton, NL, Dad’s childhood was quickly turned upside down when at the tender age of just 10 years old, his mother and little brother both died of diphtheria, within five days of each other. After that he lived with relatives and family friends, while his father worked, and he quickly learned to be self-reliant, independent and resourceful . That tragedy could have defined his life in a negative way, but it didn’t. He chose the opposite path and became the exceptional person we all knew and loved. He left home the day after he graduated from high school, and found work up north. From there he worked at the American Base in Argentia, tried his hand at teaching for a short time and then in 1959 joined the St. John’s Fire Department where he remained until he retired as Captain in 1988. He thoroughly enjoyed and was so proud of his career as a firefighter and would often reminisce about his years there. In 1957 he married his sweetheart Shirley, and they began building a family and wonderful life together. Always together, you would rarely find one without the other. They enjoyed many trips together, especially their 32 years that they spent the winters in Florida.
Edgar was a generous, gentle, humble, kind soul and his family was his everything. He was a friend to everyone he met and never said a bad word about anyone. He loved to tell a good (long) yarn, and sing a good tune with his guitar, and loved to laugh. He was the patriarch of the family and was there for all of us, no matter when we needed him or what we asked of him. The answer was always yes. He was the family “fixer” whether it was painting, carpentry, broken hearts or some advice to get you through a difficult situation; he was our rock. It’s hard to imagine a life without him but all the years of his sage advice will help us navigate our way through our lives with the lessons he has taught us along the way. As in life, he will always remain an inspiration to us all and an example to live up to.
The family would also like to thank the staff of Chancellor Park (Morgan Building), 2nd floor, for their kindness, compassion and exemplary care for the short time he was there.
Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home at 329 Freshwater Road on Thursday January 8th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 9th, 2026 at 11:00 am.
Donations can be made to the Diabetes Association and the Alzheimer Society.

Capt. Hindy was my training officer when I joined the St. John’s FD in 1981. He impressed me as a very quiet, thoughtful and caring individual, who gave his best to make sure we learned our job well and stayed as safe as possible while doing it. Years later he visited us at SJRFD one afternoon and we had a wonderful conversation, remembering those early days. He will surely be missed, and always remembered. My sincere condolences to his family.

As his younger cousin, I remember him pulling me from one side of Winterton to the other with his dog, Rover I think, with me enjoying the ride on the sled! Dear Mrs. Hindy, Karen and family – As you may recall, my wife Jeanne is a resident of The Morgan and there, when visiting her, I was fortunate to meet you and Edgar.. You were all warm and friendly with Jeanne and it was easy to see that you were a caring and loving family. I’m sure that he will be greatly missed.
I was not aware that Edgar had been a fire captain as I would have mentioned to him that Jeanne’s dad was Deputy Chief Joe Wakeham during part of Edgar’s career in the department. May you find peace after his loss and have many warm memories of him
