Born in Glasgow, Scotland on April 14, 1946, to Hubert and Margaret Bennett (nee Izzett), he immigrated as a baby to Canada with his parents. Ed was the oldest of three children and grew up on Bell Island, Newfoundland. He was educated at The Beach School and St. Boniface High School before earning a Diploma in Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1966, where he was the recipient of the IOC (Iron Ore of Canada) Scholarship. Ed’s exemplary career in the Canadian nuclear industry spanned 32 years of increasing responsibility at Ontario Hydro/Ontario Power Generation, where he worked at all CANDU nuclear generating sites in Ontario, as well as at Head Office, and retired at the engineering management executive level. This was followed by 13 years at CANDU Owners Group Inc. where his expertise helped all Canadian and International CANDU plants achieve world class status.
Ed was a dedicated family man to his many nieces, nephews and godfather/uncle to children of his closest friends, supporting their endeavours, showing genuine interest in their accomplishments and participating in their milestone events. He was a true friend and maintained close friendships from his earliest university years. He had a passion for woodworking, curling, skiing, golfing and hockey, all of which he thoroughly enjoyed over many years. He will be remembered for his inquiring mind, his kind and caring personality and his concern for the well-being of his family, friends and associates.
