Elizabeth (Bessie) McKenzie

Obituary

It is with great sadness that her family announces the passing of Elizabeth Dorcas McKenzie (nee Walsh), known to many as Aunt Bess.

Predeceased by her husband Edwin McKenzie; her parents Issac and Esther Walsh (nee Knott) and brothers Lorne, Tom, Steve, Jim and Wallace.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her children Rubena, Ernest (Betty), Elizabeth Kennedy (Joe) and Beverly House (Rod). Grandchildren Athena (Robert), Mark (Lori) and Kurt (Jessica); Todd and Kirk House; Jason (Nicole) and Tim Kennedy (Jessica). Great-grandchildren Chloe, Sophie, Finley, Owen, Nash, Wyatt, Luke, Jade, Hannah, Riley, Sophia and Jackson. Sisters Kate (Max) and Sarah (Heber), as well as numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Whether it was at home or as the cook at the Bonne Bay Cottage Hospital and at Killdevil Lodge, Aunt Bess found great joy in feeding those around her — family, friends and strangers. Throughout her life, she embodied the idea that “food is love.” As such, in lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory may be made to The Gathering Place or a food bank of one’s choice.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will take place in the spring when her family can gather together.

Aunt Bess was loved by all who had the good fortune to have met her . Louise and I had the priviledge of being grand nieces so Aunt Bess was part of the village who raised us. She will be sadly missed and long remembered.

Rubina, Ernest, Bev and Betty,
Bessie was a wonderful person, I was blessed to have stayed with her and her family while I was in university. We had so many games of 120’s after supper and we had some great laughs at all of her stories about life in Lomond, and in Norris Point. My thoughts are with everyone in the family at this difficult time. She lived such a wonderful life and will be missed.

Elizabeth, Joe and all family of Bessie McKenzie;
Leo and I are deeply saddened to hear of Bessie’s passing. She was a dear in every way. You had her for a good long time, but not quite long enough. I’m sure your hearts are broken. Bessie in her truest form would want you to be sharing a story, a laugh or a hug right now. Leo and I are thinking of you and sending our heartfelt condolences.

Much love from Aletha and Leo

To All of Bessie’s Family
Wayne and I are so so sorry to hear of Bessie’s passing. She was a beautiful, kind, and gentle lady.
I remember staying with her and Rubena a few times in St. john’s, and she treated me like one of her own children. She always cooked and made sure you over ate! She always had that beautiful smile on her face which often made me wonder what she was
thinking! When defining “Mother”, Bessie would be one of the first people to come to your mind. Sincere condolences to the family.

Rubena, Elizabeth and Joe. In the time that I spent in Bessies presence, I was amazed at her love of life. I quickly learned why working with Elizabeth was such a pleasure. Bessie’s influence shone. Each time I drove past Summerville Plaza I wondered what she was accomplishing today, I regret not visiting recently. During my recent struggles, I would meet Elizabeth at Sobeys with a hug from her and Bessie. Our hugs were often in the vegetable aisle. One afternoon I awoke to a trinket at the HSC saying ‘Aloe there my friend’’ I honestly didn’t know who it was from. It was Elizabeth,. There are no words. My heart breaks for you all. 🥰

My deepest condolences to all the family. She was a wonderful lady!

So sorry to hear of Bessie’s passing. What a wonderful lady. Susan and I rented our first home from her in 1983 and she was so pleased to be able to renovate one of the rooms for our baby son Matthew. She could never do enough for us and we were so grateful to have her in our lives.
