Obituary
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Jane Fitzgerald. Jane was
born on January 9, 1948 and passed peacefully at home on Monday, July 27th, 2026.
Through her journey of 78 years, she touched many lives with her wisdom, humor and love.
Predeceased by parents John and Jean Malone, brother Patrick Malone, Melvin Fitzgerald
and Ronald Rattray.
Leaving to mourn are her children Kristen Rattray (Kristen), Liam Fitzgerald (Rebecca) and
Riley Fitzgerald, nephew Gary Fitzgerald (Jen), brother Mike Malone and her grandchildren
Bee, Alexis and Paige. She had a large circle of friends and extended family that are too
many to list.
As an army brat, Jane lived in many cities throughout Canada during childhood, and
ended up in Newfoundland to stay. She was highly involved in sport, especially basketball
and volleyball. She was inducted into the Athletic Honor Society that’s awarded to
students that make an outstanding contribution to the Athletic program of Memorial
University. She went on to become a Physical Education Teacher at both the Junior High
and then University level (MUN), spending endless hours coaching teams of all levels. Her
interest and love of sport lives on through her grandchildren; Jane was their biggest
cheerleader.
She worked in Recreation and Sport with the Provincial Government, later moving to
Municipal and Provincial Affairs. Jane loved being an educator and was always keen to
share her skills and knowledge no matter the subject.
Volunteering was a way of life for her, rooted in her belief that small acts
of kindness make a lasting impact. She devoted herself and her expertise with facilitation
to many, including literacy work, the local theatre, Red Cross Emergency Relief, SPANL
(Single Parents Association of NL), Association for New Canadians, Wheelchair NL,
Daffodil Place, Narcotics Anonymous and more.
Jane touched the lives of so many people through her kindness, compassion, and
generosity. She was always ready to offer a listening ear or lend a helping hand, whether to
her children’s friends, family, colleagues, or a stranger she had just met in the grocery
store line. I think people would say that Jane left the world in a better place than she found
it.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place with no immediate service. A
gathering to celebrate her life will be announced soon, details will be given on social
media.
To the family of Jane: so very sorry to learn of Jane’s passing. We were the first two cousins born into the Malone family. Eleven others followed, making 13. I have several sweet memories of our childhood together. May you know the comfort of the Lord during this very sad time.
So sorry to hear of Jane’s passing. We worked together for several years and saw each other at various sport and recreation events afterward. We always had great chats and I always enjoyed seeing her.

I read, with sadness today, the news of Jane’s passing. Many years ago we were teammates on the women’s varsity volleyball team at Memorial University. Following our university studies we continued playing, together with some of our former college mates, in the local women’s senior volleyball league. Jane was a talented athlete and a great friend. In recent years we had not seen each other often but when we did there were always hugs and a catch-up on the latest happenings in our children’s and grandchildren’s lives. I shall miss her and offer my sincere condolences to her family

I am so saddened to hear of Jane’s passing. She was a volunteer driver at my workplace for many years. Daffodil Place. She was always a pleasure to chat with and always helped us out in a pinch. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
