Elizabeth Joanne Murphy

Passed peacefully away at home on July 18th, 2026, in St. John’s after a brief illness, age 83 years.

Predeceased by her parents Dr Joseph B. and Alice Murphy, her sisters Moya Sharpe, Brenda (John) Carter and brother Denis.

Leaving to mourn her sister-in-law Margie (Bouzanne) Murphy, nephews Peter, Edward, Stephen, Ian, Jeremy (Leisha), Joseph (Carrie), nieces Maria (Brian) and Alison, close lifelong friend Margot Duley (Carol), 12 great nieces / nephews, 1 great-grand nephew and many friends.

Elizabeth had a strong yet gentle spirit and was a dedicated care giver to her Mother, Aunt Marjorie (“Mardi”) Harris and sister Brenda in their latter years.

Elizabeth attended Miss Furlong’s Winterton school, then Sacred Heart Convent in Montreal after which she pursued her university studies, earning a B.A. (Hons) from Memorial University, and an LLB degree from Dalhousie University. She was fluent in French and Spanish. For over forty years she served with dedication and exemplary non-partisanship in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as Clerk Assistant and Clerk of Committees.

Elizabeth had a wry sense of humor and was more than willing to laugh at herself.

Elizabeth was an accomplished amateur golfer and a dominant figure in women’s golf at both the club and provincial level. Between 1971 and 2001 she won 22 Medal and 19 Match Play tournaments at Bally Haly Golf Club and represented Newfoundland and Labrador some 15 times at amateur and Senior national Golf Championships. Elizabeth lobbied diligently and successfully for the rights of women golfers at Bally Haly and beyond.

Elizabeth had a deep Catholic faith combined with a great appreciation of music, including liturgical, and she used her talents to help organize the music for the Latin Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church. She also served as chair of the board of Una Voce International in St. John’s.

Also, Elizabeth was a great lover of animals of all kinds. But dogs held the highest place of honour – especially Dachshunds and more particularly her own dear Sara and Heidi.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2026.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 25, 2026  at 11:00 AM at St Francis of Assisi Church, 29 Outer Cove Rd, Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove.

Interment will be on Monday, September 28 when she will be reunited with her beloved parents and sisters in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a donation to the SPCA in memory of Elizabeth would be greatly appreciated.

Just seeing this today. Sad news. Condolences to the Carters and the rest of her family and friends. I always enjoyed chatting with Elizabeth whenever we chanced to meet (most often on the golf course). Talk was mostly of family. Quiet, reserved and dignified, she was such a pleasant lady.

With deepest condolences to friends and family on the loss of Elizabeth. She was a welcome and wonderful addition to our family dinners in the late 1990s. A beautiful life well lived. A wonderful conversationalist. She will never be forgotten.

So sad to hear of Elizabeth’s passing. In the halls of the Confederation Bldg, we had such lovely chats. She was a faithful Public Servant. Sending condolences to her family !

Living near Elizabeth gave me the chance to have occasional gabs with her. I always loved our chats and enjoyed her dry wit. My sympathies to the family.

I’m so very sorry to learn of Elizabeth’s passing. I met Elizabeth many years ago when she was a dedicated volunteer at the St. John’s area animal shelter.

My condolences to her family.

To Elizabeth’s family and friends I extend my warmest condolences. Our connection goes all the way back to school days. I remember well a period of time when Elizabeth came to Mercy and wore her green Winterton School tunic. In many ways she was the same Elizabeth who was always so helpful to me as an MHA and a House Caucus leader during my 13 years in the House of Assembly. She was always so gracious, not to mention knowledgeable. We also enjoyed bumping into each other at various musical events in the city over the years. As a matter of fact it was at such an event we had our last conversation – probably at Tuckamore. May she rest in peace.

So sorry to hear the passing of Elizabeth

My Mom and I extend our condolences to the family and friends of Elizabeth. My late Dad , Kevin, regularly attended Latin Mass and he thought the world of Elizabeth and her dedication to the Church. We had the pleasure of knowing her, even if just for a short period of time and her lovely spirit shone brightly. It always will. RIP Elizabeth and thank you for the kindness you showed to Dad and to us.

So very sad to hear this news. Elizabeth was a wonderful golfer, who mentored many of us along the way. I have many fond memories of spending time on a variety of golf courses with Elizabeth. I was most fortunate to attend clinics with her and even caught a ride home from Stephenville with her and Brenda back when I was a junior! Elizabeth will definitely be missed.. my condolences to her family and friends.
