Elizabeth (Lib) June Cunningham
September 15th, 1937 – April 3rd, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth (Lib) June Cunningham (née Burgess) at St. Patrick’s Nursing Home on April 3rd, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born on September 15th, 1937 in St. John’s, Lib was the youngest daughter of May Jackman and Harry Burgess. She is predeceased by her three older siblings, Lola, Roy, and Harry who filled her childhood with joy and laughter.

Lib leaves to mourn her devoted husband George of 65 years, and her cherished son Geoff (Cathy). She was a proud grandmother to two loving granddaughters Jennifer (Richard) and Jessica (Adam), and the light of her life, her great-grandson Jake. Also leaving to mourn sisters-in-law Frankie Burgess (Roy) and Shirley Burgess (Harry), cousin Albert Burgess, and many nieces, nephews, “adopted grandchildren” and friends.

Those who knew Lib would describe her as funny, loving, driven, and the life of the party. Her door was always open and she had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to any gathering and make all feel welcome.

Lib’s journey began with her training as a beautician in Michigan, where she met George. After moving back to St.John’s, Lib and her sister-in-law Shirley opened a beauty parlour called the Klip N’ Kurl. Lib’s career then progressed in electrolysis where she was an active member of the Newfoundland Hairdresser Association (twice serving as president) and the Atlantic Provincial Association of Professional Electrologists (served on the executive).

Lib was active in her community, she thoroughly enjoyed her Masonic family as a long time member of Lodge St. Andrews Ladies Auxiliary serving many years as President. She also had great interest in politics. She was a grass-roots supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party and her efforts were rewarded with the Grace Sparkes P.C. Person of Distinction Award in 2003.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Mawhinney, the nursing staff and dedicated care teams on the first floor of the St. Patrick’s Nursing Home for their support of Elizabeth and her family during her final years.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday April 7th, 2025, from 2:00pm – 4:00pm and again from 7:00pm – 9:00pm.  A funeral service will take place at Carnell’s Memorial Chapel on Tuesday April 8th, 2025 at 11:00am. The inurnment ceremony will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to the St. John’s SPCA via this link, https://spcastjohns.org/donate/or the charity of one’s choice.

To George, Geoff, Cathy and family: Richard and I have such wonderful memories of our visits at Lib and George’s home or at Geoff and Cathy’s cottage with Lib and George. Lib was such a wonderful lady who was full of fun, love and kindness. She made sure that we had the wildest, craziest ‘screeching in’ ceremony on one of our visits. The ‘Jig’s Dinner’ was also a night to remember and evenings of card games we had never even heard of, made for so many laughs and great memories. Lib was a family TREASURE. We send our sincere condolences to Lib’s wonderful Cunningham family. Love from Marlene and Richard Robinson
