Eric Gilbert Dicks

January 26, 2018

Obituary

Passed peacefully in the presence of his loved ones, Eric Gilbert Dicks of Portugal Cove, formerly of Bell Island. Eric recently celebrated his 93rd birthday with a well attended party surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and close friends. Dad/Poppy Dicks was the centre of a party, well able to kick up his heels, play a tune on his harmonica, accordion or tin whistle. He was a former member of the CLB Avalon Battalion Band , a founding member of the CLB in Portugal Cove and more recently a member of “Val & Friends”, who regularly entertained residents of several care facilities in the north east Avalon. Eric enjoyed life and loved engaging with people. He attended weekly card games sponsored by church groups and others, and loved going to the local Portugal Cove “Rainbow 50+ Club” activities and outings.

Eric is predeceased by his loving wife Evelyn Pearl Dicks in 2011 to whom he was married for 61 years. He leaves to mourn one daughter Rhonda (Adrian) Mitchell, and four sons: Rick (Beverly), Robert (Betty), Ramsay (Tina), Russell (Valerie), also twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. His special companion Winnifred (Winn) Churchill has been a bright light in these passed years and she has shared many of the joys with him in his twilight years. Especially missed by his daughter in law Elaine Dicks.

Dad has been a very independent person since our mom passed, but it is with great appreciation that we recognize all those who have brought a renewed joy of life to him. “The Rainbow 50+ Club”, members of “Val & Friends” who encouraged him to join and perform his love of music. Also acknowledged are his fellow worshipers of St. Lawrence Anglican Church, including in particular Reverend Amanda Taylor.

The family also gives thanks to the nurses and physicians at HSC 4NorthB for the care Dad received during his brief illness.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Saturday January 27 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday January 28 from 1-9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Monday January 29 from St. Lawrence Anglican Church at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at St. Lawrence Anglican Cemetery, Bauline Line Ext.

Our prayers and thoughts go to Uncle Eric’s family. It was sad to receive the news from Keith Dicks on Friday of his passing. We last saw Uncle Eric in 1998 when he was in Ontario for my father’s (Bert Dicks) birthday. Uncle Eric was in fine form, singing, dancing and having a good time. I will remember him that way.
