Obituary

In his 96 years, his life had many chapters.

Growing up in the 1930s was challenging in a family of 12 siblings. One of his chores was to gather scrap wood for the home stove and fishing for trout in Quidi Vidi or the many ponds in the area. His love of fishing would continue well into his 60s.

As a young adult, he rowed in the Royal Newfoundland Regatta.

He learned to be a meat cutter at Lawlor’s and later worked as a meat cutter at Dominion. He would eventually work as a cook/Steward aboard the Great Lakes ships and his love of cooking started.

When he retired life centered around his wife, Marie, Daughter Ann, and his four grandchildren Lisa, John, Derek and Steven. Visits were always anticipated with joy.

He did develop an interest in gardening and could be seen puttering in his gardens weeding, planting perennials.

He became an avid curling and baseball fan.

When Marie became sick with cancer, he devoted 10 years to caring for her, cooking cleaning and treating her like a princess.

Thank you to family and friends who supported him and helped him. especially when he was alone during Covid.

Anne and Ernie’s grandchildren: So sorry to hear of Ernie’s passing. He was a great friend and Neighbour always there for a chat. Ernie and Marie were the best Neighbours anyone could wish for. May his gentle soul R.I.P. God Bless

Ann, Lisa, Jon Steven and David, I remember Ernie was such a “gentle” man, a true gentleman. While Marie worked for many years at Parkdale she and Ernie became like family. My dad always had the highest regard for them both. I’m sure he is now tending to Marie with all the love they shared. Rest easy Ernie.

Ann, Lisa, John and Stephen. Dave and I send you our love and condolences at this time.
I have many memories of Uncle Ernie. He was a great listener and loved a good chat. His cooking years ago was from his heart and delicious. I fondly remember his fish cakes in particular, they were amazing and he taught me how to make them.
May your own memories warm your hearts and soften your grief.

Uncle Ernie’s long life was a gift many do not reach .
I have many fond memories of his goodness to me as a child and into the years where I helped both him and Aunt Marie during her illness . Rest in peace Uncle Ernie .
