Eva Hilliard (nee Caines) passed peacefully away on 15 March 2023 surrounded by love. She leaves to celebrate her life children Gail (Paul Hamilton) and Paul (Sherry); grandchildren Julia Hamilton (Tom Tyson), Alan Hamilton (Christine Zadorozny), Trent Hilliard (Ainsley), and Tanya Hilliard (Todd Moor); great-grandchildren Naomi Tyson, Aidan Hamilton, Hannah Moor, and Regan Hilliard; and many beloved friends and relatives.

Born in Corner Brook in 1931, Eva grew up in a home full of love. As an only child, she was doted on by her parents, Aubrey and Ada Caines, and all of her relatives. She enjoyed quality time with her cousins and neighbours growing up, feeling like one big extended family.

Her father played matchmaker in introducing her to Harvey Hilliard in 1949. Eva, although fully charmed, maintained her focus in pursuing a career in nursing. In 1953, Eva graduated from the Victoria General in Halifax. After a five-year courtship, Eva and Harvey were married in 1954.

Eva and Harvey started their life as newlyweds in Corner Brook. They made the move to St. John’s in 1965, where they became fixtures of Hatcher Street for more than 50 years. Friends were quickly made as they integrated themselves into the community and the local bridge club.

Eva is remembered for her kindness and her exceptional generosity. She cultivated many talents – sewing, baking, crafting, and gardening – and would always share whatever she had. There was no danger of anyone going hungry in Eva’s orbit!

Eva was a loving daughter and wife, and a proud mother and grandmother who prioritized her family above all else. She spent countless hours decorating birthday cakes, sewing Halloween costumes, and watching sports days. She always knew the latest results from a weekend bonspiel and remembered everyone’s favourite cookie recipe. In recent years, she was blessed with great-grandchildren, and she loved them all endlessly.

Eva gave so much to so many throughout her life. She leaves her family with a beautiful legacy of selfless caregiving, blooming orchids, and an affinity for Jeopardy!. As heartbroken as we are to say goodbye, we know Harve is waiting to say hello as they are now reunited.

Sincere thanks to the Tiffany Village nurses, staff, and Dr. Penton for their exceptional care in recent times. Flowers are respectfully declined; donations to the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Community Food Sharing Association, or a charity of your choice are welcomed.

A visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, from 3-5pm on 19 March 2023. A memorial service and celebration of her life will take place at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on 20 March 2023 at 11:00am.

Paul, Gail & families,
I’m so sorry to hear of Eva’s passing. I have such fond memories of her growing up as they visited whenever
they were in Corner Brook & vice versa when we were in St Johns. I hope her talent in the kitchen has been passed down. She was an amazing cook & baker & such a sweet lady. Take care
Kim (Hilliard) Strickland & family.

Dear Julia, Alan, Gail, Paul and family,
We were so so sad to hear about the passing of Eva, aka Jules’ grandma. I had the fortune of knowing her for the past ~24 years. It first started with lunch trips to her home near our high school PWC and picks up after the school dances/ events. Both her and Jules grandfather in the front of the van and all of us girls piling in. I would be swooning over her cookies and cakes to my mom! I have such fond and strong memories of her for every birthday, Christmas and family event at Jules’ house. Her kindness, care, hardworking nature, openness and love for life and people – will always be remembered and those seeds live on through everyone that she touched. May god rest her soul and may your memories of her grow stronger with time.

Lots of love during this very difficult time.

Gail and family, our sincere condolences on the passing of your dear mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.
