It is with sadness and deep gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, Eva Vivian, daughter of Elizabeth and Chesley Martin, and beloved wife of the late Frederick Vivian.

Leaving to mourn are: her loving daughters Lynn (Glenn Book), Janet (Jim Walsh), Ann (Gerry Beresford) and Sharon (Larry Nolan); beloved grandchildren Allison Book (Julien Lariviere), Jennifer Book (Stephen Galutira), Jessica Walsh (Steve Lichti), Kathleen Walsh (Brad Bonnell), Meaghan McCaw (Jesse), Laura Beresford (Frank Cesnik), Jane Walker (Jordan Lawrence), and Ian Walker (Megan); and great-grandchildren Charlotte McCaw, Henry and Gavin Galutira, Simon and Eva Lichti. Also, leaving to mourn are her dear sisters Betty Parsons (Abbie) and Anne Little, brother Wayne Martin (Marilyn), sister-in-law Karen Martin (Dave Tough), numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends, especially Kay Billard and Lorna Jamieson.

Predeceased by her sister Joan (Barry Strang) and brother David Martin, brothers-in-law Cecil Vivian (Maxine), Gray Little, and sister-in-law Mabel (Jack McRoy).

Eva grew up in New Perlican, Trinity Bay. At the age of 15, she moved to St. John’s to attend Bishop Spencer College. After completing her Commercial program, she worked at the Bank of Montreal and then at the Newfoundland Engineering and Construction Company (NECCO).

She met the love of her life, Fred, in the St. Mary’s church choir in 1949 and they married in 1952. They welcomed their first child in 1954, after which family life became her focus. She was a loving, strong, and supportive mother. She set high expectations for her children, gently encouraging them to reach their goals. Always organized, she managed to cope with four busy daughters while supporting her husband’s career and pursuing her own volunteer activities and interests.

Eva was deeply committed to her church, fulfilling many leadership roles within her church community over the years as warden, vestry member, children’s nursery and Christmas craft group coordinator. She canvassed for many charities, participated in local parent teacher associations and volunteered with the 1977 Canada Games. She was an active member of the Engineers Wives Association for many years.

Eva was always a lady; thoughtful, caring, gracious and positive – never speaking a bad word of others. A quiet, confident, humble leader who never sought formal recognition. She had a good sense of humour and her one-liners often took many by surprise.

Eva was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, godmother and friend to many. Her exceptional compassion and selfless dedication to her mother and mother-in-law set an example for her children to follow. She cherished the friendships of her Thursday Club Girls of 70 years. Her famous chocolate chip cookies made her a popular lady with the neighbourhood children, and many relatives.

Eva’s happy place was New Perlican, whether she was up on the flat rocks or sitting in the front yard of the White House, watching the activity in the harbour and conversing with passers by. She loved a game of cards and always had the ace of hearts up her sleeve.

Eva and Fred enjoyed traveling; from family adventures in the trailer, winter stays in Florida, to exploring new places with family and friends, they were game for anything!
A special thank you to Mary Glasco, Elizabeth Obidiran, Wubalem Birhane, Effie Hobbs, and Faith Nwanguma from TLC Nursing and Home Care Services for their care, devotion and friendship, which enabled Mom to remain happily in her home until recently.

Thank you to the caring staff of Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residences, Dr. Andrea Singleton, the Community Paramedicine team and long-time family physician Dr. Peter Robbins.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, December 22nd 1:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A service of celebration will be held at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Craigmillar Avenue on Monday, December 23rd at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. The funeral will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person.

Eva was a generous woman who donated to many charities. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice in Eva’s memory.
