Died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, March 2, 2026.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Michael, and grieved by her loving children, Claire (Larry) and Nick (Tanya); cherished grandchildren Matt, Kate (Alex), Ben, Tim, and Sal (Julia); great-grandson Crew, nieces and nephews; much-loved cousin Jocelyn Williams (Michael); amazing friend Andrée Thoms.
Frances was born in Twickenham, UK, on August 7, 1939. After school, she worked at various jobs (including being an au pair for one of the Peugeot brothers in Paris) before training at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing in London. Her brief stint as a nurse ended when she decided to attend the University of Birmingham. There, Frances obtained her bachelor’s degree in French and Italian and met the love of her life, Mike. After university, she and Mike married and settled in Weston-super-Mare, UK, where they taught and had their first child, Claire. A couple of years later, they packed their little family up and set out on a grand adventure, arriving in Newfoundland in 1966 for Mike’s two-year contract at Memorial University. Nick was born two years later, and Frances soon joined Mike in the French Department, where they remained as professors for three decades.
A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Frances was also an accomplished professor. She was part of a rich network of colleagues and friends at Memorial University, and Frances and Mike enjoyed attending and hosting dinners and parties over the years with those friends. Among her many interests, Frances enjoyed music, literature, good food (she and Mike loved to cook), art, and travel. Athletic as a girl, she remained active in adulthood and enjoyed hiking and various sports, tennis in particular. She loved theatre and acted in plays with the St. John’s Players and other groups in the 1970s and 80s. A capable pianist, Frances also sang in the Festival Choir for 20 years.
The spirit of adventure that led Frances and Mike to relocate from the UK to Canada continued throughout their lives. They were keen to expose their kids early to travel and to French language and culture, arranging for a two-year sabbatical in France in the 1970s. Always organized and up for a challenge, Frances balanced her own academic schedule at the University of Dijon with Mike’s, enrolling Claire and Nick in French schools, renting an apartment, etc. – and obtaining her master’s degree in the process. Frances and Mike took early retirement so they could start a translation business, spend time every winter in Europe, and visit friends and family.
After raising her two children, Frances loved the company of her grandchildren and great-grandson, and she and Mike never forgot a birthday or special occasion.
Mike’s death in 2024 was a hard blow, but Frances was determined to keep up her friendships and other activities: she continued to talk with friends near and far, attend concerts, watch her favourite French television programs, and read Italian novels.
For those she leaves behind, Frances will be remembered for her love, her strength of character, her intelligence, and her wit.
It was a full life, well-lived.
The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Mercedes Penton for many years of superlative care and for consistently providing calm and reassuring advice. Thanks to Dr. Teri Stuckless for her kindness and expertise. The home palliative care team, including Erin Nugent, Dr. Joshua Bragg, and Dr. Stephen Major, supported Frances and her family with great compassion through the final weeks of her illness.
Cremation has taken place. Family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Friday, March 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
If you would like to make a donation in memory of Frances, please consider supporting cancer research or the Tuckamore Festival of chamber music.

Dear Claire and family, I was so sorry to learn that I should never be able to ask Frances an obscure question about things French again. We had known Frances and Mike ever since we arrived in Newfoundland in 1968 and I miss them both.
(Sorry not to have made the visitation, Covid kept me away.)
So sorry to hear about Frances, she and Mike were good neighbours over the years.

Dear Claire and family,
My deepest condolences to you, Sal, Tim, and Larry, and your wider family. Arra and I are so sorry for your loss.
Mes pensées vont vers toi Claire et ta famille dans ces moments de tristesse et de peine.
We knew Mike and Fran for over 30 years. First as acquaintances they Jim and Jan then we work for them also. They were both always kind and generous towards us. Sharing cups of tea, and fresh vegetables from their garden.
Mike and I shared a love of bird watching and he took some photographs of a juvenile snowy owl That I spotted. I treasure it. For my part I brought him the occasional homemade treat and his eyes would light up
I liked watching them eating lunch together. Chatting amongst themselves. They were truly best friends
Claire and family, I am saddened to read of your dear Mother’s passing. She was a wonderful teacher and I enjoyed every moment with her. So sorry for your loss. Sending heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
SINCERE CONDOLENCESTO THS FAMILY

Dear Claire and Nick,
My deepest condolences on the loss of your mother, a wonderful colleague in the French department for many years, and whom I shall always remember for her kindness, intelligence, discipline, and beauty.
Fond memories of Frances in my first year at MUN as she was my professor for my first two French courses. She was a joy in that role and encouraged me to be a part of the first group of students (La Terrible Treize) to attend a new French program in Saint Pierre, circa 1974, which subsequently became the Frecker Institute. I express my heartfelt condolences to the family.
Condolences to Claire and family on your loss. I had the pleasure of knowing your mother and father through Amnesty International human-rights group. I don’t think she was an active member but supported your father in his work. And she was always so easy to chat with hen they hosted meetings at their house. Yu must have so many good memories of her – a life which was well lived and full.
My condolences to the family rip

Claire and family,
My condolences on the loss of your Mom. May your memories be cherished and comforting during this time.
My sincere condolences to Claire on the death of your mom, Frances. I am thinking of you as you navigate the loss of both of your very accomplished parents. I remember Frances fondly. When I first started teaching in St. John’s, I replaced Frances for a week. Even though she had already retired, Frances was teaching a second-year course during this particular semester. Frances had meticulously prepared her lesson plans, and she included comments about what she felt would be important to communicate to that particular group of students. I never forgot that. Frances was professional and kind. I’m so sorry for your loss.
I performed with Frances in the St John’s Players 1984 production of Harold Pinter’s “The Birthday Party.” The run was curtailed after opening night because of the April ice storm.
Frances will be remembered as a talented performer who was able to hold her own alongside Denys Ferry, Doug Seymour, and Lisa Hurd.
