With overwhelming sadness, we announce the passing of Frank John Simms on August 24, 2022 at the age of 89 years at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s, NL.

Frank was born on April 04, 1933 on Pass Island, NL. While he was still in school himself, he spent time teaching summer school in remote communities in Hermitage Bay. He went on to work with Bowaters as a scaler and later as a bookkeeper being located in Glenwood, Indian Bay and Corner Brook. He had very fond memories of this time in his life.

He then took a job as Welfare Officer in Twillingate and later attended the Maritime School of Social Work in Halifax, NS. After returning home he again became a welfare officer which brought him to many places in the province, including Springdale, Trinity, Bonavista, and Bell Island. He then moved to the position of Director of Social Assistance and ended his career as the Director of Child Welfare and Youth Corrections for the Province.

Frank was an avid walker and was often found doing the crossword and word jumble in the Evening Telegram.

His heart was broken in November of 2018 with the passing of his dear wife Gertrude. They are together once again.

Frank was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years Gertrude Simms (nee Carter); parents Benjamin and Berthania Simms; Brothers Harry (Maggie), James (Mary Alice) and George (Rose); Sisters Francis Simms, Lucy (Wesley) Pickett, Mary (Chesley) Parsons, and Sophie (Levi) Pardy.

Leaving with fond and loving memories are his daughter Valerie (Daniel) Fudge; sons Harry (Ann Marie), and Franklin (Kelli); grandchildren Sarah (Evan), Benjamin, Adam, and Andrew; and special nieces Elsie (Louis) Rose and Cavell (James) Reardon.

A very special thanks is extended to the staff of 3 East, Chancellor Park where he lived for the last 6 years, receiving the best of care. Please know your kindness and excellent care is greatly appreciated.

Special thanks are also extended to Dr. Boland and the nursing staff at the CCU in the Health Sciences Center for their understanding, care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the SPCA’s new facility fund.

Cremation has already taken place.

There will be a service held in The Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, NL on Monday August 29, 2022 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, the family requests masks to be worn.

Condolences

Simms Family:
Please accept my condolences on the death of Mr. Simms. He was my first manager when I commenced work at Social Services in the early 1970’s as the provincial adoptions coordinator. I remember him fondly as a committed, considerate and tolerant person, especially of this young woman who ,in hindsight, fresh out of university felt she had to speak her mind always! I also remember best the occasional road trips to our district offices which were always a learning experience and afforded the opportunity to talk openly and exchange views and ideas. Sincere condolences.

To the Simms family. Sorry to hear of your dads passing. My. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am so saddened to hear of Frank’s sudden passing. My thoughts are with his loving family as they grieve a delightful, soft-spoken, true gentleman. I had a couple of visits with Frank this past year and I was so in awe of the love he had for his family. I am sure everyone who has met him knows the beautiful love story of him and his wife. It was so special, I know I will never forget it! I hope Frank’s family is able to find peace during this very difficult time.

Harry, Ann-Marie and Family,

My apologies I didn’t make it to the wake or funeral as I have been stuck in Cape Race most of the summer and just found about your father’s passing a half hour ago (from Anthea and Gerry).

Harry,Ann Marie and family,

Our deepest condolences to you all at this difficult time. For the 19 years that I worked at Villa Nova Dental with Mr. Simms, he was a true gentleman!
