Dear Margarete,

My wife Libuse and I, we were very suddened to learn this and would like to express our deepest condolences to you and to your son Arthur and daughter Sara and their families.
Frank was a kind and generous man. We worked together at MUN during my postdoc stay in 1969-1970.

Dear Margarete, Arthur, and Sara,
I am so sorry for your loss. We all know how committed Frank was to the many good causes he volunteered for; we are all the poorer for his passing.

Dear Margarete, Arthur and Sara,
We were both very sorry to hear of Frank’s passing. Our thoughts are with you all. Frank was a wonderful person and always a great friend. Ray found Frank to be an invaluable member of the Pension Committee and Ray always appreciated his wisdom which exercisedgreat force on committee decisions.

I am so sad to hear of Frank’s passing. I met him through the Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides NL group, although it turned out we also shared chemistry as another common interest. I will always remember his unique combination of passion, dedication, kindness, and generosity. He will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to the family.

Frank was a kind and generous man. I met him when I was with the NL Arts Council and subsequently would run into him at horticultural and musical events. He always had a good word to say about whatever event was occurring and once gave me detailed information on how to grow Sweet Peas…his had caused me great envy at a Garden Show. Alas, I could not replicate his success. I am very sorry for his passing and extend sincere sympathies to his family. He was a true gentleman and will be missed.

Dear Margarete and family,
I am saddened to learn of dear Frank’s passing. I will dearly miss our chats and not being able to hear his wonderful infectious laughter.
The photo you have chosen for the obituary I could not have been better: the smile of joy and his love of roses will also be as I will always remember him by.
Sincerest condolences on your loss.

A neighbour, a friend, an associate in several endeavours – the news of Frank’s passing was a shock, a surprise, a sorrow!. Chestnut Place grows smaller and less neighbourly. I would like to call. If there is anything I could do, please get in touch.

My condolences to all.

I have fond memories seeing Dr Smith at various musical events including the Kiwanis Music Festival and others. He always had a smile on his face and took great interest in all who came his way. . He will be missed. Thinking of you all during this difficult time.

Dear Margarete, Arthur, Sara and family,

The Pitt family has lost a cherished neighbour and friend on Chestnut Place. Newfoundland has lost a brilliant scientist, environmentalist and horticulturalist who worked tirelessly in so many ways to make this a better, healthier place in which to live and thrive. You have lost an irreplaceable husband, father and grandfather. Having followed his illness, we believed he would be coming home, and it is hard to think that both of the great Drs. – Pitt and Smith – are gone within weeks of each other. Thinking of of you so much at this time, Janet, Robert, Elizabeth, Emily, David and Catherine.

Mrs Smith and Family,

I could never forget Dr Smith’s warm smile and kindness during my years growing up on Chestnut Place. I will always remember him fondly and send my deepest condolences at this sad time.

Margarete, Arthur and Sara,
As I read the obituary notice this morning, I was flooded with memories of children at school, music festivals, university encounters, so many of life’s experiences where we connected. My condolences to each of you as together you mourn the loss of your husband, father, and grandfather. May happy memories keep him close to you always.

Margarete,
Our hearts are saddened for you and your family. It is so difficult to be separated by death from one you have loved for so many years. Our lives have been intertwined and blessed by knowing you and Frank since Arthur and Shelly were married. We have very fond memories of your kindness during the time we spent together in Washington, British Columbia, and Newfoundland. We enjoy every year the wonderful cherries from the trees you gave us as a housewarming gift when we moved to the Northwest. We cherish our memories of sweet experiences together and the joy of sharing grandchildren. We extend our sincere condolences to you and your family.

Love,
Janet and Richard Shumway
