Georgina Evangeline Day

April 23, 1936 to January 11, 2024

Obituary

Georgina Day passed peacefully away on January 11, 2024, at the age of 87 surrounded by her children.

Mom is predeceased by her loving husband Bill (Jan. 8, 2000), her parents Eleazor and Jane Clarke, brothers Conrad and Randolph, sisters Edith Smith and Maude Walters and close family friend Solomon Churchill. Georgina is survived by her sister Jean Winsor.

Leaving to mourn with grieving hearts but with many precious memories, are her children Alex (partner Jennette), Georgina Taylor (Carl), Beatrice (partner Louie), Walt (Brenda), Derrick (Anastasia), Bill Jr. (Betty), Doug (Joanne), Geoff (Tina), Christine Wheaton (Floyd), Jack (Pam), and Brian (Patti); 14 grand-children that treated her with the highest respect, care and kindness.

Originally from Baine Harbour, Georgina moved to St. John’s as a young woman where she met her late husband Bill. Residing in Portugal Cove together they raised a large family of 8 sons and 3 daughters. Mom had a quiet gentle manner and modelled a work ethic that her children continue to aspire to. Mrs. Day will be remembered by so many as a loving mother and fine woman.

The family would like to acknowledge Mom’s large circle of family and friends whose kindness over the years was always treasured.

A special thank you to Chancellor Park for the exemplary care extended to Mom.

The family will be accepting visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, at 329 Freshwater Road on Saturday, January 13 from 1 pm – 9 pm, and Sunday, January 14 from 10 am – 6 pm. Our heartfelt sympathy to the Day family as you grieve the passing of your dearly beloved, Georgina.. We first met her at Carl and Georgina’s home and she also visited our home in Doylestown, PA. What a lovely, sweet, genteel woman. We clearly remember examining her hair and couldn’t find a single gray hair on her head.! We still marvel at that. We know you will miss her in so many ways. May you find comfort in the beautiful memories and cherish all that she gave of herself to her family and friends. For nothing is lost in God.

Bill, Betty and family my deepest condolences on the passing of your mother. May your many beautiful memories comfort you in this challenging time.

I had the pleasure of being in Mrs Days company daily for two years with the exception of weekends. She loved to relive her life in Baine Harbour and talk about all her memories when she first moved to town and when she moved to Portugal Cove. She loved to go for drives, she loved to go out for lunch, and of course she loved to go to Bingo. We had great chats and lots of laughs. Mrs. Day dearly loved her children and she was so proud of all of them and I offer my deepest condolences to each and every one of them.

Brian and Patti, so sad to hear this news of the passing of your Mom. Thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family. Cherish the memories of this beautiful lady. Take care and stay strong for each other.

I spent many nights as a teenager with Chris at the Days’ house. It always amazed me that 1 or 2 or 3 more was no big deal…you just found a spot at the table and there was always enough. When everyone moved out I always thought it must have been so strange cooking for herself. She was such a kind generous soul and she was always so sweet to all of us. On Sundays the Days’ seat was always on back of ours at the United Church and she always checked in to see how everyone was. She will be so missed…our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To Doug, Bill and all the Day family. I’m so sorry to hear of your Mothers passing. She truly was a wonderful lady! She will be missed.
