Gerald "Gerry" Wayne Brown

Passed peacefully away in the arms of his loving wife at the Health Sciences Centre on July 16, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Gerald (Gerry) Brown (age 78 years), a loving husband, proud father and grandfather, adored brother/brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. Those who knew him were often on the receiving end of his sense of humour, banter, and quick wit and knew of his deep devotion to his family.

Gerry was predeceased by his parents, Hilda and Wilbert Freake; sister Ivy King; mother-in-law Norah Beer; sister-in-law Dorothy Freake; brothers-in-law Cyril Stone, Tom King, Rex Champion, Lindal Faulkner, Kenny Beer, and his Burmese fur babies Kinsey, TinTin, and KoKo.

Leaving to mourn with unforgettable memories are his loving wife and best friend of 36 years Jacquie (nee Beer); sons Jonathan (Vanessa Colman-Sadd) and Keagan (Emily Rolph), grandchildren Jordan and Trinity; his siblings Louise (Don Baird), Madeline Stone, Betty Faulkner, and Wilbert (Doris) Freake, father-in-law Ed Beer, brothers-in-laws Ed Beer (Peggy), Stephen Beer (Elizabeth), Keith Beer (Diane Maher), sisters-in-law Karen Moakler (Chris) and Peggy Beer (Dale Butler), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He will be dearly missed by his two Burmese fur babies, Mokie (Mocha) and Pokie (Latte), who were his constant companions and brought him never-ending joy and entertainment.

Gerry graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Master of Science (Genetics) and later earned a degree in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cambridge in England. Photography became his passion after retiring from the public service; he always had a camera in his hands, capturing the day-to-day and special events with family and friends.

He enjoyed spending time at Starbucks with his coffee buddy Ray and going on coffee dates with his wife, Lynn, and Jeanie.

We are thankful to the many people who provided care to Gerry during his illness, especially Dr. Dawn Armstrong and her team at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre whose knowledge, support, care, and compassion helped us live our best lives; the nurses from Community Health, especially April Adams; the nurses and doctors from the Pain and Symptom Management team at the Miller Centre, the Emergency Department, and 4 North A of the Health Sciences Centre. Special thanks to family and friends who provided support and acts of kindness over the last 26 months, especially the last 12 weeks, which helped make this time of sadness a little easier.

As per Gerry’s wishes Cremation has taken place.

Visitation will be held from 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 19th at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s. A Celebration of Gerry’s Life will be held on Monday July 20th at 11 a.m., From the Carnell Memorial Chapel.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, and are graciously accepted.
