Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Gladys (Noseworthy) Matthews announces her peaceful passing at Lakeside Long-term Acute Care Home in Gander on September 18, 2025, in her 88th year.
Predeceased by her husband Clive in 2010; parents: Edward and Flora Noseworthy; brothers: Robert (Sarah), Carl (Jessie), Charles and Franklin; sisters: Gertrude (Lionel Cameron), Mable (John Wells) and Marge (Robert Elliott); sister-in-law: Nina Bartlett; brother-in-law: Ralph Matthews (Mabel); niece: Margorie; and nephews: George, Alan, Donald, Enos and Matthew.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her sons: David and Stephen (Beverly); grandchildren: Austin (Emma), Adam (Kaira), Stephanie and Andrew (Adrianna); sisters in law: Diane (Keith) Coombs and Lois Noseworthy; brother-in-law: Roy Bartlett; numerous nephews and nieces including: Debbie, Kimberly, Beverly, Nancy, Karen, Krista and Carol Ann, with whom she was especially close and who often assisted her greatly in her later years.
Gladys was born in Pouch Cove and spent much of her childhood at Cape St. Francis, where her father was a lighthouse-keeper. She married Clive Matthews (of Valleyfield) in 1958. They moved to Labrador City, where they welcomed sons David and Stephen. They would return to Pouch Cove and open a convenience store and garage known as Matthews’ Ultramar, which they operated until their retirement in 1984.
Gladys was a Lioness Member of the Pouch Cove Lions Club, which she would proudly display her ongoing affection and devotion for through wearing clothing with their logo more than any other item of clothing; the ‘Try Hugs – Not Drugs’ Sweaters: she continued to wear these sweaters even in her last week of life. She enjoyed her time with friends at bingo and darts and was known for her faster than legally permitted trips to Costco.
She was a member of the UCW at Memorial United Church, Pouch Cove, and enjoyed attending services; in later years, she attended Faith United Church in Campbellton and watched worship services from Fraser Road United Church. She enjoyed music and had a deep love for Charlie Pride’s Music; even in her later months, she could sing along with hymns and ‘The Snakes Crawl At Night.’
Gladys, in her later years, enjoyed watching Netflix series (like Grace & Frankie) and game shows (including Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune), and she would be heard talking about Steve Harvey’s suits (Family Feud). She loved to play Ludo and cards and thoroughly enjoyed a game of 120s or (more recently) Queens. Much time with friends and family was spent over such games being played.
The family will receive friends at Carnell’s Funeral Home,329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, October 27th.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, October 28th, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. from Memorial United Church, Pouch Cove with inurnment to follow in the Memorial United Cemetery, Bauline Line.
