Harry Thomas Burden passed peacefully away at home in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, after a brief illness, on July 27, 2025. He was 62.
Harry was born and raised in Gander, the second son of Jack and Amy (Newhook) Burden. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University in 1986 and a Master of Business Administration from St. Mary’s University in 1990. He was a former Executive Director of Dairy Farmers NL.
Left with happy memories are his wife of 29 years Christine, Mother Amy, brothers Ford, Jack, and Jay, in-laws Heather and Lachlan, Peter and Vera, nieces and nephews Natasha, Lennon, Emile, Lio, Jasper, and Beatrix, and his cousins, aunts and uncle. He was predeceased by his father Jack.
Harry was a loyal and close friend to many, and a beloved uncle both to his own nieces and nephews as well as to his friends’ children. He had a keen sense of humor, an appreciation of music and nature, and loved spending time with family and friends playing a game or having a debate. He will be greatly missed.
Sincere gratitude to all who provided love and support during Harry’s illness. A memorial event will be announced at a later date.
So very sorry to hear of Harry’s passing . I hung out with Harry for a period of time when we were at MUN. Always so much fun to be around . After a few months of us becoming friends we found out over Christmas break that he was my cousin . My Aunt Gertie and Uncle Hayward were his grandparents . We had a chuckle and called each other couz and was nice having family there. We lost contact over the years but I will always remember his amazing sense of humour . Rest in peace couz .
Jay,
So sad to hear of Harry’s passing. Great memories of him growing up next door and in Halifax when he was at SMU. He loved to have a giggle. Just a great guy.
Sincerely,
Kirk
Oh, Harry! You were a wonderful friend! I knew you from elementary school. Then in High School we shared a love of The Rolling Stones! We last ran into you (literally) on St Catherine’s Street in Montreal in the early 90’s. You will be missed.
Christine, I was so shocked and saddened when I heard of Harry’s passing. Please accept my most sincere condolences and may warm memories bring you comfort.
Sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to all of Harry’s family. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.
Saddened by this news, and condolences to all the family. Harry and I were good friends since grade 5 or 6. Many a laugh in school and many growing up experiences after school…..all good memories of a great guy. So sorry.
Sending deepest condolences, Christine, on your sad loss.
I love you big buddy.
I’m gunna miss you.
So sorry to hear this sad news. Gone way too soon. I have very fond memories of Harry from childhood when he and his brothers visited his Grandparents on Poplar Rd in GFW. Later I was fortunate to reconnect with Harry at MUN. Such a great guy! My deepest sympathies to his family.
Very sorry for your loss Christine. Harry was a very fine person and an excellent poker player. His passing leaves a hole in many lives.
Tom
Condolences to Christine, the Burden family and Harry’s large group of friends. Colleen, Lesley and I were fortunate enough to have had Harry in our lives for so many years, camping, canoeing, travelling, playing cards and socializing together at every opportunity. Harry was the crazy uncle to our.daughter Lesley, who has affectionately referred to him as Uncle Harry her entire life. Harry’s passing has left a large void in our lives and the future without him will be a hard road to travel but after 45 years of great memories, it isn’t difficult to remember the great times we shared and the friendship we will always cherish.
We occasionally had the pleasure of Harry’s company at our poker games. He was an astute and patient player and always very much a gentleman whether he was winning or losing. His sharp, quiet wit and pleasant disposition ensured his presence was always welcomed. He will be missed. Please accept our sincere condolences.
So sorry for your loss Christine. Sincere condolences.

Sincere Condolences Christine, from Judy and I.
Harry was witty and an incredibly intelligent conversationalist/debater. He had no hesitation going “all in”. He will be sadly missed by his many buddies.
Heaven has a new angel. I’m so sorry to hear about Harry Christine. I can still hear his laugh after all these years, it was infectious.

Jack, Mrs Burden, Jay and Ford, It’s been many many years since we’ve spoken. I’m sitting here in disbelief. When I looked at Harry’s picture it immediately brought me back to hearing his laugh. Take comfort in the many happy memories and the love. Those cannot be taken away and will live with you every day, keeping him close. My thoughts are with you. Sending you my love. Such a great loss… way too young.
Heart felt condolences to Mrs. Burden, Christine, Ford, Jack, Jay, family and friends. From the early days growing up in Gander, to University and beyond we shared many a laugh and the occasional dinner party with great music. So long my friend, until we meet again.
Sweet Harry Burden….. so deeply saddened that we will not spend time with him again. It was always so good to connect with Harry when we would come home….. he had such a special way of making you feel like no time had passed since we were friends in university … so thoughtful, caring, funny, interesting and smart …he will be dearly missed! We feel very grateful to have known him. Our hearts hurt to think of the enormous

Harry, Jack, Jay and Ford were among the first people I met when we moved to Gander in 1973. We have been dear friends ever since. I am pretty sure I hold the record for most nights on the couch at 205 Elizabeth…. the rest can not be told.! So many good memories, especially our day trips in that old silver Celica Supra.
To Mrs. Burden (Amy). My aunts’ Helen Murray and Stella Murray are both saddened for your loss. To his loving wife Christine and the rest of the lads and family.. my heart felt condolences.
Our deepest condolences to the Burden family. We have fond memories of growing up in Gander with Harry.
Harry was one of a list of Slews I met from Gander that greatly influenced my musical education while at MUN. He was at all the same reaidence/house parties, concert events and campus ‘tears’ that seemed to happen weekly. I too, like Fitz and many others, enjoyed the comradery and tuneage at Elizabeth Ave. Even the tussles with him and Jack were great. He sort or encapsulates the zietgeist for all of the great characters who travelled in our circle of friends in those formative years. My greatest sympathies to his family and the very large coterie of those who knew and respected him. 2HB………you will shine on in many memories. Thanks for that.
Deepest condolences to Christine,Jack, Jay, family and friends of Harry. Angela and I are deeply saddened and have been reflecting back on many fond occasions visiting with Harry. Always enjoyed concerts, card games and various get togethers with Harry and a his large group of friends. He was loved by many and his time with us was far too short.

Harry was a fixture in the Ivany home, and a good friend to us all. Lots of happy memories. Although I haven’t seen him in 30 years, I still feel the loss. Thinking of you all as you wade through this difficult time.
My deepest condolences to Christine, the Burden family and to Harrys many friends. I have known Harry Burden my entire life and spent many hours playing backgammon and debating him when we both studied in Halifax. He was intelligent, caring and a gifted conversationalist. I have a smile on my face today thinking that when Harry passed away he likely had someone elses lighter in his pocket. I am thankful to have been part of Harrys journey through this life. God Bless and rest in peace.
Jack,I’m just hearing about Harry…So sad my buddy..He was truly one of the good ones….my deepest condolences to you and your family
Though Harry was surrounded by brothers he was a valued member of the Blackall Brotherhood. Harry and then Jack became known as the Burden boys. I’ll forever remember the parties held at the Burden boys’ house on Elizabeth Ave.
To Jack, and all Harry’s family, my deepest condolences, I won’t forget Harry.
Christine and Family, we are deeply saddened to hear of Harry’s passing.. Although we did not know Harry, I know there are no words at this sorrowful time, only love and precious memories.. Love Pam and Ron Rose

Sleep well Harry.
Thinking of you all at this difficult time. Harry was a long time friend and I will definitely miss dropping by and catching up whenever I was in town..
He will be missed.
I was so saddened to hear Harry is no longer with us. I knew him in university, and it was always a pleasure to run into him over the years — the last time was at the folk festival, which felt fitting given how much he loved music. Harry was smart, funny, kind, and just an all-around good person. The world feels less bright without him.
My thoughts are with Christine, Jack, Jay, his family, and the many people who loved him. Poet Andrea Gibson wrote, “Grief is simply love with no place to go.” I hope all the love Harry left behind continues to carry everyone who knew him. He’ll be missed.
It truly saddens me to find myself writing a condolence message for the lovely Harry Burden. What a loss! His photo is the Harry I knew in my 20’s and 30’s, I’ll remember that sweet smile.
Much love to those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Condolences to Christine, Jack and Jay and all close to him. Harry was a fine man with a wide array of interests and a host of friends. I will always think of him when I hear some of the great Americana artists he recommended. It was great to have known him.

Harry was a Blackall Brother and we will all miss his absence! From an old friend and fellow 1980 frosh- Terry Keating.
