In Loving Memory of Herbert Strickland
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother and uncle, Herbert Strickland, who was tragically killed, along with his beloved sister Jane Westcott, in a motor vehicle accident on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Herbert was predeceased by his brother, Robert, and his parents, Thomas and Mary Ellen.
He leaves to mourn his brother and best friend, Leslie (Joyce White); sister, Elizabeth (Ross) Newell; and brother, Clarence; as well as his cherished nieces and nephews, Jane (Barry), Patrick (Melissa), Michael (Alison), Joanne (James), and Sharon, along with extended family, friends, former students, and a community that will deeply miss him.
For 30 years, Mr. Strickland was a dedicated teacher on Change Islands. He touched the lives of countless students and was much loved and respected by his friends, colleagues, and the community he served. His kindness, dedication, and genuine care for others will remain a lasting part of the many lives he influenced.
Herbert’s sudden passing leaves an enormous void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His memory will be cherished, and his legacy as a teacher, brother, uncle, friend, and valued member of his community will live on.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the first responders who attended the tragic accident. We offer our sincere prayers for their well-being as they carry the weight of this difficult experience.
Funeral arrangements will be held at Newman’s Cove Anglican Church and Cemetery. Details regarding visitation and the funeral service will be released in the coming days.

Sending our deepest condolences to the Strickland and Westcott families on this tragic loss of Herb and Jane. We are deeply saddened and pray for each and every one of you at this very difficult time. Our memories of Herb go back to the 70’s as he and Susan Roberts became close friends during their university days. Herb became a part of our family and was much loved by us all including our Mom and Dad who have since passed. He was everything anyone could have wished for in a friend and we cherish each and every memory of all the times shared together. Of course, through Herb, we met his dear sweet sister, “Jane”. It was always evident how much he deeply cared for Jane, her family and his other siblings. The community of Change Islands is mourning his loss as he had become a part of their families during his whole teaching career, and was loved by all. His life has left a legacy of Friendship and Love and fond memories of a gentleman, “Herb Strickland”.

We met Herb in the early 70’s when he was attending university. My sister Susan introduced us at our family home in St. John’s. Herb instantly became a family member and lifelong friend. He got his first teaching position in Change Islands our hometown where he taught for 30 yrs becoming a part of everyone’s family who lived there. A wonderful man, kind and gentle, amazing teacher and friend. We have been blessed to have had him in our lives, in so many of our family photos. To Herbs family, we are deeply saddened for your loss and offer our sincerest condolences to you on Herb and Jane’s tragic passing.

We have known Herb ever since we taught on the same staff on Change Islands in the early 1980s. It was a joy and a blessing to call him colleague and friend. Herb was one of the best. He loved teaching, he genuinely cared for his students and he embraced the people of Change Islands. That care and respect were returned to him in immeasurable ways.
We are so saddened by his tragic passing and that of his sister, Jane, and send our heartfelt condolences to their families and all who knew and loved them.

I met Herb (as he was affectionately called), in 1974 while we both attended Memorial University. We were introduced by our mutual friend Susan Roberts. The three of us hung out together that summer and in the Fall of ’75 Herb and I had a teaching position in Change Islands, which was my home town. Herb spent his entire 30 year career there in that beautiful community and was adopted by the locals as one of their own.. How do you sum up 30 years of friendship and the insurmountable loss to us, his adoptive family? RIP my dear friend and deepest sympathies to your family and loved ones.
