Hilda Burt

September 11, 1929 to February 17, 2021

Obituary

Passed peacefully away on February 17th, 2021, Hilda Burt, wife of 68 years to James Burt. Daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Hyde) Randell, mother to Garry (deceased; Margie) and Judy (David, deceased); sister to Irene (Len, both deceased), Ralph (deceased; Mabel), Don (deceased; Betty), Gord (deceased; Nancy), Sue (Pete, deceased) and Betty (Warwick, deceased); loving grandmother to Kelly (Joel), Lisa (Doug), Karen (Chris) and Kim (Trevor); proud great-grandmother of Leah, Lochlyn, Mason, Hannah, Kinsley, Sam, Anna, Ella and James, along with many special nephews, nieces, dear in-laws and great friends.

Born and raised in beautiful Port Rexton, Newfoundland. Hilda was a gentle soul from the very beginning. Inline with her caring nature, Hilda became a teacher. Her first teaching job was across the island in Rose Blanche. As the story goes, she arrived on a stormy day, and was greeted by a dashing young man. His name was Jim, and thus started a lifelong love story. Over the years, there has always been some ‘discussion’ about who first left Rose Blanche, and ‘who followed who’ to St. John’s – but the result was a lifelong love reflected in their marriage of 68 years. Hilda and Jim truly did everything together – this included making the best jigs dinner, bread, blueberry pudding and tea biscuits around.

As Hilda and Jim started raising a family, she devoted her life to the care of her family, and later for other children as well. Hilda was lovingly known as “Quiet Nan” to many family and friends, both for her gentle nature and intention to feed anyone that graced her kitchen. Hilda’s true love was Jim and her family, but she was a known lover of her garden, hanging out a good line of fresh laundry, a perfect cup of tea, her shows and a good game of cards. Jim and Hilda spent countless special nights with family and friends enjoying a game and good company. In earlier years, they enjoyed special times in Glace Bay, Heart’s Delight – and in later years, they spent wonderful winters in Florida at the South Pasadena Mobile Home Park.

We are ever grateful to the amazing people that cared for Hilda in these final years, especially the wonderfully caring staff at Glenbrook Lodge, who care equally for every resident, everyday. As when you cared for Jim, we know you are the true heroes, especially in times such as this. You will be remembered always. Thank you♥.

A celebration of both Hilda and Jim’s lives will occur later, when family and friends can gather again. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice in her memory.

Dear Mom and Dad In Heaven

I sit here and ponder how very much

I’d like to talk with you today

There are so many things

That we didn’t get to say.

I know how much you care for me

And how much I care for you,

And each time that I think of you

I know you’ll miss me too.

An angel came and took you by the hand, and said

Your place was ready in Heaven, far above…

And you have to leave behind, all those you dearly loved

You had so much to live for, you had so much to do…

It still seems impossible that God was taking you.

And though your life on earth is past,

In Heaven it starts anew,

You’ll live for all eternity, just as God has promised you.

And though you’ve walked through Heaven’s gate

We are never far apart,

For every time I think of you,

You’re right here, deep within my heart.
