Obituary
St. John’s, NL, August 19, 1930 – February 23, 2022. Passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2022. Predeceased by his sister Jocelyn Bélanger of Montreal, Quebec, and brother Paul Bélanger of Ottawa, Ontario. Leaving to mourn his partner Judy Locke, his son Steve (Wanda), and daughters Anne Collins (Jerry), and Lise Squires (Craig). Also leaving to mourn his grandchildren Jay (Alaina), Claire (Cyril), Alex (Meaghan), and Christopher (Chantelle), and great grandchildren, Cooper, James, Sadie, Carlie and Chloe. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and raised in Montréal, Merrill worked as a chartered accountant in Newfoundland for over 40 years, first at HR Doane, and later as Vice President of Johnson Insurance. He served on the Board of Governors for the Canadian Tax Foundation, was awarded the Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for his outstanding service to the profession and community, and served as Chair of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Dedicated and hard working, he was a trusted advisor to many, and a respected colleague. We would like to thank Dr. Kristian Green, as well as Dr. Jatin Morkar and the nursing staff on 4 North A for their care and support.
Cremation has taken place. A private interment ceremony will be held at a later date.
I am Merrill’s cousin from Attleboro, Ma 02703.. His mother, Berths and my grandmother were sisters, both born in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Actually, Paul, Merrill and Jocelyn were my mother’s first cousins but I remembered the many visits they made to Attleboro.. My name is Charlotte Fournier Soule. I would love to hear from.his family. Sad to hear of your Dad passed last week. He was truly one of the last generation of 50′ gentlemen that made their mark in NL. I enjoyed my conversations with him at Anne and Jerry’s yearly Christmas parties and could reminisce with him about Corner Brook in “the day” and the socializing that took place with my parents. It was a special era.
