James Hayward Gulliver

November 27, 1931 to January 14, 2026

Obituary

James Hayward Gulliver (1931-2026), aged 94, embarked on his final journey January 14, 2026.  A devoted husband to Vivian for 61 years, and a loving father to Karen, Greg, Lisa and Corey.

Born in St. John’s, Jim learned the value of hard work at a young age from working at Bowring’s, to Canadian Tire, to his own Trucking Company.  Jim also knew how to enjoy life.  He played sports and enjoyed the great outdoors.

Jim lived his life on his own terms and whether you called him Mr. Jim, Ol’Goat, Uncle Jim, Brother, Son, Poppy, Pop Pop…or Dad…he dearly cherished his family and his friends.

Predeceased by his parents James and Leah; siblings Jack, Fred, Ira, Reg, Jean, Bernice, Dorothy, and special angel – Tracey.

He is survived by the last of his eight siblings, his loving sister – Melvia Wadden.

Also leaving to fondly remember him are his wife, Vivian, children Karen (David), Greg, Lisa (Clint), Corey (Tina); also a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and an extended circle of family and friends.  Also leaving to mourn his special friends Wince and Freddie, and his cherished moose hunting buddies Floyd, Vern, Russ and Keith.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at both St. Clare’s Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre for their care over the past couple of months, especially the Doctors and Staff of 4NorthA.  The care you provided to Jim over the last few days was amazing and very much appreciated.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road in St. John’s.  Visitation will take place on Saturday, January  17 from 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm.

A Celebration of Life will take place at later date.

As expressions of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy Canada, or Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

“Miss me…but let me go!”
