Jean Marcella Ryan (nee Fleming)

July 18, 1940 to June 28, 2022

Obituary

On the morning of June 28, 2022, our family lost its guiding light. Our loving, fiercely independent, and passionate mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.  Jean Marcella Ryan (nee Fleming) from Allan’s Island, Lamaline, Newfoundland, lived a life full of passion, enthusiasm, and love.

A graduate of Saint Clare’s School of Nursing, many of Jean’s fellow Nursing students remained her lifelong friends and true supporters of one another. While at St. Clare’s, Jean met and married her patient Ron Ryan, the love of her life.

Jean’s Nursing career was one of the many true joys of her life. She explored all avenues of the field: working with children, traveling to remote areas of Newfoundland, and providing coastal nursing to many families.

Jean left Newfoundland and ventured into Labrador with Ron and her three children: Andrea, Rhonda, and Geoff.  While in Labrador, she continued her Nursing career working with an industrial mining company, within the public school system, trained in charting systems in Regina which she implemented in Labrador City’s Emergency Department.  Upon her return to St. John’s she worked at St. Pats and St. Luke’s.

Jean’s favourite place was at the cabin in New Bridge, where she and Ron enjoyed many summers with her grandchildren and friends. In her later life, Jean found great joy in gardening, reading, and her family.  She will be deeply missed, never forgotten.

Predeceased by her husband, Ron Ryan and her siblings; Jim Fleming, Kay  Herder, Tom Fleming, and Louise Marshall. Leaving to celebrate her life are her children Andrea Rhinelander (Ray), Rhonda Gullage (Keith), and Geoff Ryan; her grandchildren Jessica Rhinelander (Sean Feeney), Lauren Gullage (Sarah Kirby), Aaron Rhinelander (Erika Tobin), Ryan Gullage (Ashley Thomas), and Ian Gullage (Katie Baker); her great-grandchildren Amelia Gullage and Hayley Jean Gullage; siblings Mary Bourgeois (Mark) and Cyril Fleming; and in-laws Steve Herder, Joan Fleming, and Warrick Marshall.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, June 30 from 2-4 p.m.  The funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, July 1 at 10 a.m.  The graveside committal will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Saturday, July 2 at 10 a.m.

Geoff, Rhonda, and Andrea,
I was so sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. Memories of spending time with your family are filled with the sound of her laughing and her welcoming spirit. She is definitely part of many happy childhood memories for me.
Your mom made the time to check on me when I was in the hospital as a kid. I never forgot that she did that and it meant a lot to me. I will be thinking about you and your families. I hope that knowing that so many people have wonderful memories of her brings you comfort.

Our condolences to you, Geoff, Andrea and Rhonda and your families.
I have such fond memories of visiting the Ryan home in Lab City, and the cabin in NL and the very warm welcome by Mrs and Mr. Ryan. Your mom’s sense of humour and intelligence were always appreciated and admired..
We are thinking of you all and hoping that happy, loving memories will make this sad time, a little easier.
Jean- Claude, Jackie & Lauren.

My most sincere sympathy to you at this sad time. I have followed your mother’s last journey with heart-felt compassion for you all. Even without having the chance to meet her, it was clear this was a woman who was well loved and treasured by her family. Your loving care through her last illness must surely have given her genuine comfort and moments of real happiness even while knowing her time on earth was drawing to a close. May you now find some solace in knowing you did all that your could for her while she was with you. Peace.

Sorry to read this. We knew your mom and dad as we live just up the road from their cabin in NewBridge. Our deepest sympathy.

I have great memories of working with Jean at St. Pat’s many years ago. She was a fantastic nurse and a great co-worker. It was a pleasure to work with her.
My deepest condolences to you all.
